There's not much out there like Ari Aster's second horror outing, "Midsommar." It's the ultimate break-up movie, where Florence Pugh's Dani ditches her self-absorbed boyfriend Christian (Jack Reynor) in ways both satisfying and deeply disproportionate. It's about the seductive way cults make themselves your new family at the cost of everyone else. It's, similarly, about the seductive allure of Nazi eugenics. Everyone wants to belong. At Harga, the titular Midsommar festival, your hosts will make sure you fit into the right niche. Including the one six feet under.

The Hunt for Gollum is bringing back some big Lord of the Rings names, but there are others that fans would love to see return more than Gollum.
The Lord of the Rings fans are long used to seeing memorable characters returning in later projects. The Hobbit (for better or for worse) brought back Gandalf, Galadriel, Legolas, and others to link the two trilogies together. The Rings of Power, set thousands of years in the past, features Galadriel, Gandalf, and Sauron.
Now, all eyes are on The Hunt for Gollum, a spinoff movie directed by Andy Serkis, who also reprises his role as the twisted figure who once owned the One Ring.

Massive news from Severin Films coming out of the annual Super-Shock Pop Up Festival, which I'm so sad I wasn't able to attend, as it always seems like such a great opportunity to see rarely-screened films with an audience. As The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum gets closer by the day, the first live-action Lord of the Rings movie in Peter Jackson’s critically acclaimed trilogy has returned to streaming charts nearly a quarter of a century later. 2001 brought on the release of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, the critically acclaimed Lotr movie based on the work of J.R.R. Tolkien. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring is streaming on HBO Max globally, where it’s still charting in the top 10 in several countries, such as Australia, Armenia, and Kazakhstan. The film earned immaculate scores of 92% from critics and 95% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, and it also found tremendous financial success, grossing $889 million globally against a $93 million budget.

The Star Wars galaxy isn’t just built on lightsabers, starships, and epic battles. It’s also shaped by the voices behind the characters. While many fans know Ashley Eckstein as Ahsoka Tano—she’s become a celebrity in her own right through Her Universe and her impact on Star Wars fandom—and Dee Bradley Baker, whose voice work as the clone troopers is iconic, lesser-known actors have quietly defined some of the franchise’s most memorable moments.

Tim Burton has made a ton of memorable horror films over the years, like Beetlejuice and Frankenweenie. However, one of the director's most beloved works of the 21st century has been Corpse Bride. The stop-motion animated gothic romance is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. Now, Monster High has joined the party with a new doll based on Corpse Bride.
A part of their Skullector Doll series, Mattel’s latest Monster High addition is the Corpse Bride herself, Emily. The figure comes with a spiderweb mesh and silky blue bridal gown and the 10.5-inch scale piece has 11 points of articulation. It's also the first sculpt from Monster High that features a skeletal arm, leg, and rip cage. As Mattel put it:
“We’re celebrating the 20th anniversary of Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride with a supernaturally stunning Emily doll that fans of the film will be dying to add to their skullection.

Del Toro has talked about wanting to make his own version of Frankenstein for years. He’s now 60 and knows time isn’t unlimited. “I’ve been doing movies for 30 years. I’m not going to be alive for 30 years, I don’t think,” he told Vanity Fair.

Ever since Ari Aster’s deliciously horrifying “Midsommar” forever traumatized us, its Og inspiration, “The Wicker Man,” has also found a new life, or dare I say, “reincarnation.” The 1973 Pagan-themed horror is very much recognized amongst the genre aficionados anyway, and Midsommar’s popularity has only resulted in adding a handful number of members to the cult over the last three years.

Dracula, Bram Stoker's 1897 novel, endures as a towering monument of gothic literature, its shadow stretching across centuries and cultures. With a mesmerizing blend of horror, sensuality, and dark romanticism, the Count has seduced generations of readers and filmmakers alike, from F.W. Murnau's silent nightmare Nosferatu (1922) to Bela Lugosi's haunting gaze in Dracula (1931).
Christopher Lee starred in Hammer's Dracula movies, his sanguine presence on full display in ten films, cementing the Count's cinematic immortality. Later, Francis Ford Coppola's opulent 1992 adaptation draped the tale in velvet and tragedy. More recently, Robert Eggers breathed eerie life into the legend with a new Nosferatu. Each adaptation reflects each era's fears and fascinations, but the Count's hypnotic pull remains undiminished.
However, not all Dracula adaptations are kissed by moonlight, and in fact, there is a new movie coming out that is drawing the ire of critics.

Professionals in the used car sales industry often don't generate sympathy, at least under traditional pop culture depictions. But how would you feel if a one ended up framed for murder and had to deal with supernatural forces? You'll need to watch the upcoming scare film Covet, a unique horror film with some truly inspired casting.
Two Horror Icons Team Up
Covet is guaranteed to draw interest from horror fans as the film features a new cinematic team-up with Kane Hodder and Bill Moseley. Hodder will play the trouble-plagued car salesman trying to prove he didn't murder his mistress. Moseley will appear as Sheriff Troy, but it is unclear whether he'll play a skeptical law enforcement officer, akin to Tommy Lee Jones in The Fugitive (1993), or a menacing misfit, similar to R. Lee Ermey's Charlie Hewitt from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning (2006).
Details about the film are sparse,...

While director Tim Burton is best known for live-action films like Beetlejuiceand Batman, the filmmaker has more than a few killer animated features under his sinister belt. The one that often gets talked about is The Nightmare Before Christmas – a film which he didn't even direct. However, out of the stop-motion animation classics he did indeed direct, Corpse Bride is arguably his most celebrated in that artful category. Now, in honor of the film’s 20th anniversary, Corpse Bride is finally coming to 4K Blu-ray.
Warner Bros. will be releasing Corpse Bride via a 4K/Digital combo pack steelbook. While the spooky edition doesn't have a release date yet, there is cover art to admire. The outside is simply the film’s logo on a black background, but the inside artwork is more defined. The inner workings of the steelbook feature Emily, aka the “corpse bride,” with a few of the eerie underworld residents.

The story of Count Dooku is far deeper than most casual Star Wars fans may realize. By the time we meet him in the prequel trilogy, where he's played by Christopher Lee, he had already fallen from the Jedi Order into the arms of the Sith Lord Darth Sidious. But Dooku was the Anakin Skywalker of his day. He was the Hero, the Rogue, the Ignored. His fall from grace was a catastrophic failure on the part of the Jedi; Anakin’s own fall was merely the final nail in the coffin.
Dooku’s complicated story is something that should be explored in as much detail as possible, ideally in a multi-film or multi-season TV series. Let's have a look at how that could work.
Beware Spoilers from here on out!
As a baby, Dooku was rejected and left for dead by his own father after discovering he was Force-sensitive.

If there’s one thing we’ve learned after more than a hundred years of horror movies, it’s this: you just can’t keep a good “monster” down. That’s certainly true of the “Golden Age” icons, whether it was Frankenstein’s monster or Count Dracula. It may be more certain now in the age of “spin-offs”, prequels, and countless sequel. Plus it also extends to those fiends without flesh, like Chucky of Child’S Play. And now there’s a “gender flip” on that. Back in 2023 the January film “doldrems”, when often the thriller “dregs” would be dumped into the hungry multiplex, a chiller with a satiric “bite” brought us a new horror “heroine”. Well, she’s baaack! Finally, leaping off the toy shelf and into our nightmares comes M3GAN 2.0.

Over the span of eight seasons, Rick and Morty has been absolutely bizarre, with inside jokes, pop culture references, and even spawning meme kings. Needless to say, over this long period, the series has been absolutely mental, with each episode introducing a little more trauma while also introducing new characters and a weirder narrative.
One such moment took place in Season 2 Episode 4, where the fans were introduced to Mr. Poopybutthole, an absurd-looking character, and a more peculiar catchphrase, “Ooh whee.” The mysterious being has been a part of several sad narratives, but his debut was perhaps the saddest of all.
After all, the creators of the animated series decided to showcase a dark and uncomfortable truth about human relationships, using Beth Smith. Sadly, in the process, our zany-looking friend ends up getting shot.

Gary Oldman, the Hollywood legend who starred in films like Mank, The Fifth Element, and The Dark Knight trilogy, delivered one of his best performances ever when he played Count Vlad in Bram Stoker's Dracula. Oldman's Dracula was a game-changer in the vampire genre, as the actor fully embodied a monster suffering for love. It didn't matter if he was wearing heavy makeup, or playing the handsome Count that Mina Harker falls in love with, you understood that vampire's tragic story. It was all the work of the actor, who was convinced he had to be in the film after reading one line of the script.
Oldman appeared in the latest episode of Josh Horowitz's podcast, Happy Sad Confused, to talk about his career. The Academy Award winner recalled his time making the Batman trilogy, the sci-fi adventure The Fifth Element, and his role in the successful Apple TV+ series,...

Spoiler Alert !!!Spoilers from Rick and Morty Season 8, Episode 4 ahead!!
Rick and Morty has returned for Season 8 and has been doing a phenomenal job of dropping banger after banger in its newest season. In its latest episode titled “The Last Temptation of Jerry,” the show has skewered the holiday season, making fans believe that it is better if we know less about holidays.
However, it is not a Rick and Morty show if we do not get to see one too many pop culture references dating back to the 70s. The latest episode ensured that they don’t fall back on its traditions and threw several references in the episode.
The episode was chaotic, bizarre, and random, but amidst everything, a hilarious exchange between our two protagonists caught the attention, where they pay homage to sci-fi films from the 70s in their unique way.

Excited at a chance to work with Francis Ford Coppola, Gary Oldman said his audition script for Bram Stoker's Dracula was only icing on the cake. He reflected on his experience working with the director, and how that film highlighted his impressive, eclectic career.
Gary Oldman wouldn't have starred in Bram Stoker's Dracula if not for its director, Francis Ford Coppola. Oldman said his reservations stem from previous adaptations of the character, especially the iconic versions from esteemed actors. "Let's put it this way. But it was Coppola and I thought that he would do something very interesting with it. And so I felt carried."

While a lot of focus has been put on the possible list of actors who could take on the role of James Bond in the latest iteration of the action franchise, it looks like a big Hollywood name has emerged as a new favorite to take on an antagonistic role opposite whoever slips into the stylish suit of the super spy.
Over the years, Bond villains have come in many shapes and sizes, but the vast majority of them have been nothing if not memorable. Some of the greatest actors of several generations have played the bad guy in Bond movies, from Christopher Lee and Donald Pleasance, through Richard Keel, Christopher Walken, and Sean Bean, to Christoph Waltz and Javier Bardem during Daniel Craig’s era. Now, it looks like a renowned Irish actor with an incredible resume, and a recent Oscar win under his belt, is taking the lead in recent betting odds.

Over the decades, many actors have taken on the role of Count Dracula, but Gary Oldman delivered one of the most memorable performances in Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Stepping into the shadow of legends like Bela Lugosi and Christopher Lee was no easy task, but Oldman was eager to collaborate with director Francis Ford Coppola—especially after reading one particular line in the script that he couldn’t wait to say.
“I was about to read the script and audition for Francis,” Oldman told Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. “And the thing I remember most vividly was, ‘I’ve crossed oceans of time to find you.’ And I thought, ‘God, I’d really like to say that line.’” It is a great line, and as he always does, Oldman delivers it perfectly.

Andy Serkis gave us a phenomenal performance as Gollum in The Lord of the Rings, but behind the scenes, he wasn’t exactly thrilled when he first landed the role. In fact, Serkis initially had serious doubts about the part, especially when he realized he’d mostly be voicing a CGI character. It felt like a step back for an actor chasing more traditional, on-camera roles.
That frustration lingered until he met director Peter Jackson. Their first meeting changed everything Serkis expected, revealing a deeper creative vision that ultimately changed his entire perspective on the role and its groundbreaking potential.

By 1973, Richard Lester, Philadelphia-born but as vital a figure in the cutting edge of ’60s British cinema as Tony Richardson and Lindsay Anderson, had run his film career aground with a string of flops. But he never fully gave up on his plans to adapt The Three Musketeers, a project originally intended as a vehicle for the Beatles.
A few years after the Fab Four went their separate ways, Lester finally got the production off the ground, and he approached his adaptation of Alexandre Dumas’s classic 1844 novel with the same comic lens that informed his earlier work. Initially planned as a single epic complete with intermission, the final movie would be split in two for greater ease of distribution and profit potential.
The films follow the plot of the novel faithfully: Lowborn but skilled swordsman d’Artagnan (Michael York) travels from the country to the capital to join the elite Musketeers,...

Elijah Wood has officially left the Shire, folks, and he ain’t looking back. In a departure from his Lord of the Rings glory days, Wood’s shocking new look for The Toxic Avenger reboot has us fans all baffled. Teaming up with Peter Dinklage in this gory superhero flick, Wood ditches the innocent Frodo vibes for something way darker and downright grotesque.
With balding patches, gnarly teeth, and villainous flair, his transformation is practically nightmare fuel. If you grew up watching Frodo Baggins, buck up, this version of Elijah Wood might just scar you for life.

The Three Musketeers / The Four Musketeers: Two Films by Richard Lester, Spine #1263, will be released in the Criterion Collection on May 27th, 2025.
As a child of the 90s, I grew up with Stephen Herek’s version of The Three Musketeers. It’s not particularly well-regarded these days, but with a cast including Charlie Sheen, Kiefer Sutherland, Chris O’Donnell, and Tim Curry, it perfectly encapsulated its era and served as a solidly entertaining swashbuckler, at least through the eyes of a seven-year-old boy.
I was aware of other adaptations, including Richard Lester’s, but for decades, Harek’s film was my sole experience with the characters of Alexandre Dumas’ iconic novel on screen. Now, with a digitally remastered 4K edition coming to the Criterion Collection, I’ve seen what is arguably the superior adaptation.
