Netflix’s ‘Persuasion’ Writer to Adapt Biography of Victorian Abortionist Madame Restell for Just John Films (Exclusive)
Image
Just John Films have optioned Jennifer Wright’s biography of Victorian abortionist Madame Restell, Variety can confirm, with the writer behind Netflix’s “Persuasian” film set to adapt the book for screen.

Published by Hachette, the New York Times-bestseller “Madame Restell: The Life, Death, and Resurrection of Old New York’s Most Fabulous, Fearless, and Infamous Abortionist” recounts the jaw-dropping life of British-born Madame Restell.

“’Madame Restell’ tells the story of one of the boldest women in American history; a self-made millionaire, a celebrity in her era, a woman beloved by many of her patients and despised by the men who wanted to control them, a businesswoman, a scofflaw, an immigrant,” reads the synopsis. “A shrewd capitalist and full-throated media war agitator, Madame Restell made it big in 19th century New York by providing safe abortions. The series tracks Madame Restell’s life, from early New York’s immigrant slums...

10 remarkable things about The Lawnmower Man
Top 10 Ryan Lambie 14 Jan 2014 - 06:26

Our occasional series of journeys back into the weirder films of the past continues with 1992's Vr horror thriller, The Lawnmower Man...

As a document of the early 1990s, The Lawnmower Man serves as a colourful time capsule. Aside from its big shirts, tight jeans and unaccountably buoyant hair, it's also a snapshot of the era's technology and fascination for virtual reality.

At a time when the media was gripped by images of people wearing cumbersome headsets and gloves pawing eerily at the empty air in front of them, virtual reality was widely considered to be the emerging technology which could transform life as we know it. And while this may yet come to pass - Oculus Rift has recently seen Vr back in the news - we're no nearer to having our daily lives transformed by it than we were 20 years ago.

The Lawnmower Man,...

On Girls, Adam, Rape, and Consent
Is Adam on Girls a rapist? I don't know. But does he care an appropriate amount about his partner's consent? Nope! No, he does not — and his disturbing encounter with Natalia on this week's episode is not the first time we've seen that in action. Remember that time he peed on Hannah?I'm on record for actually kind of loving that scene, and I wasn't particularly horrified by it at the time. But since then, Adam's pattern of behavior has often been frightening and downright creepy, and "On All Fours" brought that to a, er, climax, and inspired many responses. "Adam may not be a rapist, but he sure is an asshole," writes Jennifer Wright at the Gloss. "What happened in the last episode of Girls was not 'uncomfortable sex,'" writes Samhita Mukhopadhyay on Feministing. "Natalia’s humiliation and debasement are not sexy, but painful," says Jace Lacob at the Daily Beast.

Joe Millionaire (2003)
'Joe Millionaire' Apologizes And Slams Reality TV
Joe Millionaire (2003)
Back in 2003, "Joe Millionaire" star Evan Marriott ruled reality TV. Nine years later, Marriott is older, wiser, and pretty apologetic.

In the nature of "The Bachelor," Fox's "Joe Millionaire" focused on the life of Marriott as he wooed women with his "money" and took them on extravagant dates. The catch? Marriott was actually a working class construction worker.

The series -- and a scandalous slurp in the woods, in particular -- recently made HuffPost TV's list of Fox's Most Shocking Moments Ever in honor of the network's 25th anniversary.

"Joe Millionaire" didn't exactly humble Marriott, and he went on to say no one on the show was his "type." Marriott listed the qualities of his "dream girl" to People magazine: "Blonde, big boobs, a little waist and a big, thick bubble butt."

After reading an article written by The Gloss' Jennifer Wright on Tuesday about how Marriott was a "terrible...

Episode Recap: Charlies Angels - 1.05: "Angels in Paradise"
Charlie's (Victor Garber) old friend's yacht is hijacked by Mercer (Pedro Pascal) who is wanted for kidnapping. He demands a $5 million ransom. "My angels were the answers to his prayers." Hey Bosley said similar in 1.4 Angels in Chains, "They do answer my prayers," he tells Samantha. Abby (Rachael Taylor) comments on this being another day in paradise when they go ahead with the rescue. Eve (Minka Kelly) and Bosley (Ramon Rodriguez) dive underwater and they reach the yacht that way. Abby demands proof of life and Mercer shows him the boy. They fight the kidnappers and Abby does her 'Xenia Onatopp' (Famke Janssen) impression from the 007 Goldeneye movie. (But not as suggestive.) Mercer escapes overboard and the explosion is so fake CGI. Theo, the boy, draws a pic of the angels but leaves out Bosley. He got footage from the card on the camcorder of a mother and son. Charlie calls Bosley,...

Why smart men date less intelligent women
Jennifer Wright
Washington, Mar 7 – Women usually want their perfect man to be smart and brainy, but the same can’t be said in the opposite case – in fact, smart men seem to want to date less intelligent women, but why?

Jennifer Wright at TheGloss.com recently asked CNBC financial reporter John Carney, and nine other “smart men,” why so many studies indicate that men.

Sex and the Bible: What the Good Book Really Says
Two new books argue that the good book isn't the squeaky-clean endorsement of no-sex-until-marriage that conservatives say it is. In this week's Newsweek, Lisa Miller reports on the surprise findings.

The poem describes two young lovers aching with desire. The obsession is mutual, carnal, complete. The man lingers over his lover's eyes and hair, on her teeth, lips, temples, neck, and breasts, until he arrives at "the mount of myrrh." He rhapsodizes. "All of you is beautiful, my love," he says. "There is no flaw in you."

The girl returns his lust with lust. "My lover thrust his hand through the hole," she says, "and my insides groaned because of him."

This ode to sexual consummation can be found in-of all places-the Bible. It is the Song of Solomon, a poem whose origins likely reach back to the pagan love...
