Collapsed and died of a stroke in the arms of Alison Dowling who plays her daughter-in-law Elizabeth Pargetter in the BBC radio series The Archers, immediately after recording of an episode at the BBC studios in Birmingham.

Started her BBC radio acting career in 1945

She is the voice of "Julia Pargetter" in the long running BBC radio series, "The Archers".

Although she was, for decades, one of the most familiar voices on British radio, she made no television appearances until the late 1950s and was only ever in three films, all of which were released within a space of two years.
