Roger Waters at an event for Bernard and Doris (2006)

Anecdotes

Roger Waters

Modifier
  • Father Eric Fletcher Waters was a British soldier killed in World War II in 1944 in Anzio, Italy. His death proved to be a huge inspiration on Pink Floyd's music, particularly on the albums "The Wall" (1979) and "The Final Cut" (1983). Additionally, his grandfather, George Henry Waters, was killed in WWI in 1914, which was also an inspiration to his music.
  • After leaving Pink Floyd, he sued, unsuccessfully, to prevent the remaining members from using the band's name.
  • Is partially tone-deaf. Uses earpieces in concert to help him sing. When he was in Pink Floyd he used to have his bass guitars tuned by keyboardist Richard Wright.
  • Is a huge fan of John Lennon and cites "Isolation" as one of his favorite songs of all time. He played on a Lennon tribute show in 1985 performing "Across the Universe" with bassist Andy Fairweather Low.
  • The 2009 Sunday Times List estimated his net worth at $139 million.
  • Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (as a member of Pink Floyd) in 1996.
  • Attended the Regent Street Polytechnic School of Architecture, where he met fellow band mates Richard Wright and Nick Mason.
  • Lives in New York City.
  • On 11/16/05 Pink Floyd was inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame for their outstanding contribution to British music and integral part of British music culture.
  • In March 2003 Pink Floyd's 1973 album "The Dark Side of the Moon", topped Classic Rock Magazine's list of the 30 greatest concept albums of all time. Their 1979 album, "The Wall", came tenth and their 1983 album, "The Final Cut", came 21st on the list.
  • Has a son named Jack with wife Priscilla Phillips.
  • Has been married three times, first to Judy Trim from 1969-75 (she appears in a photo in some versions of the Pink Floyd album" Ummagumma", credited as "Jude"), then to Carolyne Christie from 1976-92, with whom he has two children, son Harry and daughter India, and finally to Priscilla Phillips from 1992-2001, with whom he has one child. His daughter India is a model, and son Harry tours with his dad as a keyboard player.
  • He has been a vocal critic of the state of Israel. In 2019, he organized a controversial (and unsuccessful) petition which opposed Israel hosting the Eurovision Song Contest due to the conflict with the Palestinians. His petition was supported by fellow British prog-rock legend Peter Gabriel, but it prompted a rival petition signed by Stephen Fry, Rachel Riley, Simon Callow, Sharon Osbourne, Gene Simmons, Al Murray and Tracy-Ann Oberman, who accused the other petition of attacking the "spirit of togetherness".
  • In March 2003 his 1987 solo album "Radio K.A.O.S." came 24th on Classic Rock Magazine's list of the 30 greatest concept albums of all time.
  • He met his third wife Pricilla Phillips thru her friend Maryam d'Abo at a restaurant.
  • Even though he's vocal about his disdain for television, he is very supportive of social media.
  • Though he is often recognized as a key and influential figure in the development of modern music, Waters admits to not being much of a recreational music listener himself. Bob Dylan, Neil Young, and John Lennon are among the only artists that he consistently revisits.
  • In 2005 he became engaged to waitress Laurie Durning.
