The Georg Solti Accademia is elated to announce its 20th anniversary celebration, commemorating two decades of unparalleled excellence in nurturing young talent in the technique and style of Italian “Bel Canto.” This milestone not only celebrates the Accademia’s commitment to continuing the operatic legacy of the legendary British-Hungarian conductor Sir Georg Solti but also underscores its significant impact on the world of classical music.

The gala concert, set for October 20th, 2024, will feature performances by distinguished alumni: mezzo-soprano Aigul Akhmetshina, tenor Freddie De Tommaso, soprano Hera Hyesang Park, and baritone Paul Grant. This special event, co-produced with the Hungarian State Opera and backed by the Accademia’s principal sponsor, Rolex, promises to be a once-in-a-lifetime gathering of these exceptional artists. The Hungarian State Opera’s orchestra and conductor will also contribute to this extraordinary evening.

Earlier this week, the New York Philharmonic was joined by Marvin Hamlisch's friends and collaborators, including Joshua Bell, Ral Esparza, Michael Feinstein, Maria Friedman, Josh Groban, Megan Hilty, Audra McDonald, Kelli O'Hara, and Frederica von Stade for a special New Year's Eve concert saluting the late composer-conductor. Paul Gemignani conducted and Lonny Price directed the performance, which was hosted by Audra McDonald.

Highlights include a new production of the musical Annie Get Your Gun; a gala concert celebrating Stephen Sondheim's 80th birthday and featuring highlights from Ravinia's Sondheim productions; Ravinia Music Director James Conlon's 60th birthday celebration taking the Chicago Symphony Orchestra into the Martin Theatre for two Mozart operas, featuring mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade in Così fan tutte and baritone Nathan Gunn in The Marriage of Figaro; Leonard Bernstein's Vocal Suite from Candide; Broadway vocalist Kelli O'Hara and pianist Hershey Felder in intimate solo shows in the Martin Theatre; world premieres with Concert Dance, Inc. and the debut of Delfos Danza Contemporánea; the presentation of Ballet Folklorico de Mexico; and a national radio broadcast of Garrison Keillor's A Prairie Home Companion.

Gerald Corbiau, director of arthouse hit Farinelli, is set to direct Le Diable Au Corps, an opera film that's being written expressly for the screen, rather than adapted from an existing opera. It's a bold strategy, Cotton, let's see if it pays off for them.Fay Weldon is writing both opera libretto and screenplay, which is based on Raymond Radiguet's 1923 novel of the same name (roughly translated, that's "Devil In The Flesh"). The story is set in a quiet town outside Paris, on the eve of World War I, and sees a schoolboy, Raymond, and a 19 year-old woman, left behind when her husband heads off to the front, begin an affair. The leads have yet to be cast, but Raymond's parents will be voiced by Jose Van Dam and Frederica von Stade.The songs and music have been composed by France's Alain Jomy. Opera-lovers should keep an eye out for this in 2010, we're guessing.
