- He was to be presented with a plaque during halftime of the 1975 Florida-Vanderbilt game, to honor him after he was inducted into the National Football Foundation College Football Hall of Fame. His old coach has to accept for him, as he was still in critical condition after his injury during a car stunt.
- He was driving a car that was supposed to go off the end of a wharf in the Disney film La folle escapade (1976). Oil had been applied to the wharf to facilitate the stunt, but too much was put down. The car went out of control and hit an abutment. Van Sickel suffered brain damage, and remained an invalid for the rest of his life. Before the accident he had been semi-retired, only taking a few jobs a year "to keep from getting stale". His family sued Walt Disney Productions.
