He died a year after the release of Les Aristochats (1970), his final acting role.

Had portrayed Horatio K. Boomer, Nick Depopoulous, the Old-Timer, Vodka, Uncle Dennis and Wallace Whimple on NBC Radio's "Fibber McGee and Molly" during the 1930s and 1940s. His character Whimple had the same voice as his later cartoon creation Droopy Dog.

He was awarded a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for Radio at 7021 Hollywood Boulevard in Hollywood, California.

He has appeared in two films that have been selected for the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically or aesthetically" significant: La Belle et le Clochard (1955) & La Belle au bois dormant (1959).
