Henry Cavill’s Highlander reboot has just landed a new cast member that will turn it into something of a Gladiator reunion. The first Highlander was released in 1986 and quickly became a pop culture staple, spawning multiple sequel films and other media.

After many delays and false starts, it was announced in 2021 that Henry Cavill would play Highlander’s protagonist Connor MacLeod in a reboot of the hit franchise to be helmed by John Wick director Chad Stahelski. Joining them is Russell Crowe, who will take on the mentor role originated by Sean Connery in the 1986 classic.

Now, The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Djimon Hounsou, a character actor known for Shazam!

THR reports that Djimon Hounsou will join Henry Cavill in the upcoming Highlander reboot, which Chad Stahelski will direct.

Cavill is playing Connor MacLeod, a Medieval Scottish Highlander who discovers he is an immortal warrior. With help from a swordsman named Ramirez, played by Russell Crowe, MacLeod battles other immortals across time. The cast includes Dave Bautista as The Kurgen, Karen Gillian as MacLeod’s Scottish wife, and Marisa Abela as his modern-day love interest. Action films, like horror movies, run the risk of becoming weary, predictable, and hollow. Both genres are popular among mainstream audiences, leading to saturated markets and orders to follow strict formulas that executives know will guarantee ticket sales. Instead of the jump-scares, teen protagonists, and haunted houses, we find in horror, action flicks are required to feature fight sequences, weapons, and quick-cut editing that speeds the pace along.

On surface level, the John Wick franchise looks like another run-of-the-mill action series that blends into the background: fights, guns, explosions, and arrogant baddies reeling off long speeches before defeat. A retired hit-man returns to take revenge? It’s not a new plot-line, but director Chad Stahelski makes it feel like it with his singular revitalization of the worn-out genre.

John Wick chiefly stands out because of its tone. By infusing elements of neo-noir, John Wick is given the depth and dimension most action franchises lack.

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is finally a hit. After bombing at the box office, the Guy Ritchie-directed action movie has found new success on streaming.

FlixPatrol is reporting that The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is currently ranked No. 3 on HBO Max's Top 10 Movies Worldwide chart. After only grossing $29.7 million at the box office last year, this marks a noticeable improvement for the action movie, which features Henry Cavill, Eiza González, Alan Ritchson, Henry Golding, and Alex Pettyfer among its star-studded ensemble. The movie was based on Damien Lewis' book Churchill's Secret Warriors: The Explosive True Story of the Special Forces Desperadoes of WWII, which documents Winston Churchill's first 'deniable' secret operative force to operate behind enemy lines in World War II.

While based on real events, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare portrays a heavily fictionalized version of the role played by Churchill's Special Operations Executive in Operation Postmaster.

Kolstad is the head writer on Splinter Cell: Deathwatch, the upcoming animated series based on the popular string of Tom Clancy games that first released in 2002.
