- In his youth, he played football for Leyton Orient. He had just turned professional, when he was called up in 1950 for national service with the RAF. Stationed in Egypt, he subsequently became involved with the Forces Broadcasting Service.
- Began his showbusiness career in 1954 as a stand-up comedian in a double act with Leslie Garbon. Spooner later turned to writing gags and sketches for other comedians and then became a writer of espionage, crime and science fiction scripts for TV series. Initially with the BBC, he formed a long creative association with ITC in 1966/67, eventually as creator or co-creator of top shows, like Département S (1969) and Mon ami le fantôme (1969).
