1986 was one of the most important years for American comic books ever, especially DC Comics. More than any other comic gem which debuted that year, Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' 12-issue "Watchmen" finally gave superhero comics some literary prestige. Yet Moore wrote another comic masterpiece that same year.
Frank Miller's "The Dark Knight Returns" is usually listed alongside "Watchmen" as the '86 book that changed people's ideas of what comics could be. "Dark Knight" imagined an ending for Batman, depicting an aged Bruce Wayne coming out of retirement when Gotham City needs him again. Moore, one of Miller's contemporaries, sung the praises of "The Dark Knight Returns" when it was first published, penning a foreword for it titled "Mark of the Batman":

"Superman" features writer-director James Gunn's muse Nathan Fillion as the Justice Gang's self-appointed leader (and name decider), the hothead Green Lantern Guy Gardner. But you may have missed that the former Captain Reynolds isn't the only "Firefly" star in the movie.
Compared to previous "Superman" films, Gunn's picture features lots more of the casual sci-fi silliness of Silver Age "Superman" comics. Metropolis gets attacked by a kaiju, Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) has his own pocket dimension, and Superman's (David Corenswet) Fortress of Solitude has several robot attendants.
The robots have uniform designs, but also unique voices and numbers. The lead robot is #4, but by the end of the movie, he's taken a new name: "Gary." Gary is voiced by Alan Tudyk. Since his days playing the funny starship pilot Wash on "Firefly," Tudyk has become a prolific voice actor.

We might always associate Man of Steel with Metropolis or Krypton, but it’s really Cleveland that is the home of the Man of Steel. Now, Superman is being immortalized in that hometown with a statue that stands on an 18-ft. pillar.
This past weekend, the Siegel & Schuster Society — so named after Superman co-creators Jerry and Joe — erected the statue in the men’s namesake tribute plaza. And yes, it is made of stainless steel. Nearby is yet another tribute: a bronze statue of Siegel, Schuster and Siegel’s wife Joanne, who served as the original model for Lois Lane. In that statue, the three are pointing in the distance and in awe, with Schuster taking to an illustration pad. Rounding out the plaza is a 9-ft. steel and glass phone booth, with Clark Kent’s Daily Planet get-up inside, indicating he’s off to save the day somewhere. It...

As far as superheroes go, one of the most iconic in any comic book universe is Superman, who has been DC Comics' flagship character since 1938. True to his nicknames as the Man of Steel and the Man of Tomorrow, Superman is easily one of the most powerful figures in the entire DC Universe. However, he also isn't completely invulnerable, with several major weaknesses not limited to his biggest weakness Kryptonite. Just as there have been multiple characters in the Dcu that have pummeled Superman, there are also numerous figures in the Marvel Universe that could wreck the Man of Steel.
Whether it's characters capable of standing toe to toe against Superman in a physical brawl or characters' unique abilities capitalizing on his weaknesses, Superman isn't unbeatable in the Marvel Universe. This distinction is shared by Marvel's greatest heroes and villains, each ready to tangle with the Last Son of Krypton in their own way.

In James Gunn's "Superman," there's a small group of heroes — Green Lantern/Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion), Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), and Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi) — called the Justice Gang. It's a running gag throughout the movie that no one really likes that name (except Guy). If the DC Universe keeps going, we have to guess a rebrand to the Justice League is inevitable, but at least the Justice Gang already has the right headquarters.
The group is funded by wealthy businessman Max Lord (Sean Gunn), who, in the "Justice League International" comics, was the League's sponsor. Lord's money means the Justice Gang has a large HQ, a whole Hall of Justice. If you're a DC fan from the "Super Friends" days, that name probably rings a bell.
A lot of "Superman" was filmed in Cleveland, Ohio, but the crew also went to a different part of the Buckeye State.

James Gunn is setting the record straight about Dcu’s first feature, Superman, which has been labelled as “Superwoke” by many critics. Gunn, who is known for breathing fresh life into iconic franchises, has now stepped up to defend his project.
The movie stars David Corenswet as the Man of Steel, and is already receiving love around the world, which is evident in its box office numbers. But after being accused of pushing a political agenda, Gunn revealed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that it’s not about what people are framing it to be:
I mean, people did value kindness in the past. That was an American value, kindness, and it doesn’t necessarily seem to be that way to me anymore. So that was always the center of the movie for me, and it wasn’t about anything other than that.

Following comments that Superman is an immigrant and “the story of America,” director James Gunn has come under fire from a certain section of the political divide, many of whom have accused the Man of Steel, a character defined by his kindness and desire to do good, as too “woke.” Now, Gunn himself has responded to this “accusation,” with the filmmaker left a little confused about this predominantly right-wing interpretation.
Speaking with EW recently, Gunn reveals that he has “heard people say it was woke,” but has heard just as many saying “it's not.” The word “woke” has now been contorted into something so far from its original meaning that it’s largely meaningless at this point, but certain commentators continue to use it to criticize whatever they don’t like at the time. James Gunn recently spoke with Entertainment Weekly about the surprising backlash his movie “Superman” faced before it even hit theaters. Some conservative outlets, including Fox News, called the film “SuperWoke” after Gunn described Superman as an “immigrant” and said the character’s story is really “the story of America.” Gunn said he’s still a bit puzzled by the criticism.
He explained, “I’ve heard people say it was woke, and then I’ve heard a lot of people say it’s not. I am curious as to what in the movie is considered woke.”

Superman is flying high at the domestic box office, where’s it’s up to $235 million after two weekends. Internationally, however, the movie is behind at $171 million, something writer/director James Gunn has chalked up to a combination of factors — including “anti-American sentiment.”

James Gunn isn’t letting the “SuperWoke” right wing criticisms bring his “Superman” down. The writer/director, who is also the co-head of DC Studios, told Rolling Stone that the superhero film has reached success at the international box office despite rising “anti-American sentiment[s]” worldwide.
The film has reached $235 million domestically since its release; internationally, it’s only at $171 million, but Gunn is glad it has had a strong multiple. “We’re definitely performing better domestically than we are internationally, but internationally is also rising and having really good weekday numbers in the same way we are,” Gunn said. “So obviously the word of mouth is very positive both here and everywhere else, which is the thing that we needed to do the most. At the same time, there are certain countries in which it’s really performing well, Brazil and the U.K.”
He added, “Superman is not a known commodity in some places.

Here's a no-brainer: make Lex Luthor the villain of your "Superman" movie. If there's one Superman villain who everyone knows, it's Lex. Nicholas Hoult's Lex in James Gunn's new "Superman" might just be the best one yet. But before Gunn decided on Lex as the movie's bad guy (with some muscle provided by the masked Ultraman), he weighed using at least one other villain. Specifically, a Superman nemesis whom fans have long wanted on the big screen.
In a recent interview on the "Happy Sad Confused" podcast with Josh Horowitz, Gunn revealed that he "considered" using Brainiac in "Superman." He didn't elaborate on what that version of the film would've looked like, but DC fans should be reassured that James Gunn is aware of Brainiac. Arguably the most iconic superhero in the world is Superman, the flagship character of DC Comics created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster in 1938. A smash success with readers upon his debut, the Man of Steel was immediately adapted into other mediums, from radio and movie serials and among the earliest superhero television series. With that in mind, there have been a lot of actors to play Superman in live-action, beyond small cameos and one-off appearances. And just like the many live-action Batman actors, everyone has their own favorite who played the legendary superhero.
From the franchise's black-and-white days on film and television to its big-budget Hollywood blockbuster era, the coming of a live-action Superman still feels like an event. But as beloved as many of these interpretations of the classic characters are, some just clearly stand as superior compared to their counterparts. Turns out, Fox News is currently busy deporting the Big Blue Boy Scout while raising questions on whether he came to Kansas on Earth legally or not.

When filmmaker James Gunn called his new Superman film an immigrant story, critics accused him of politicizing Superman. But you can’t politicize the truth. Superman has been an “illegal alien” for 87 years—a fact we helped America remember when we launched our 2013 campaign, Superman Is an Immigrant.
Of course, we couldn’t have predicted Donald Trump—the man DC Comics literally used as their model to reboot Lex Luthor in 1986—waging war on the very immigrants Superman represents. In 2000, Luthor became president in the comics, complete with an anti-alien agenda. No one imagined the real President Trump would follow the same playbook.
Superman entered America without papers, a baby refugee fleeing a dying planet. Like countless immigrants before him, he changed his name from the foreign-sounding (in his case, Hebrew) Kal-El to the anglicized Clark Kent. Across decades of “Superman” comics, Metropolis has been located in various places. In James Gunn’s new film, it’s once again in Delaware — but no, that’s not actually Delaware you’re seeing onscreen. In fact, the movie shot nowhere near it.
Like any film, there are multiple filming locations. Much of “Superman” was actually shot in various cities in Georgia, but that was mostly for interiors. The city of Metropolis you’re seeing is in the Midwest — Cleveland, Ohio, to be specific. Meanwhile, the Hall of Justice, where the Justice Gang hangs out, is over in Cincinnati.
You might wonder why Ohio was chosen for this version of “Superman.” Well, it’s partly because that’s where the character’s creators, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, came up with the idea for Superman. But for director James Gunn, that was just an added bonus.

James Gunn’s DC Studios reset “Superman” is flying toward a potential $150 million weekend debut at the box office, with $22 million already in the bank from Thursday previews. But now that we’ve finally seen it, IndieWire’s “Screen Talk” co-hosts Anne Thompson and Ryan Lattanzio are here to debate the movie, which swaps Henry Cavill for newcomer David Corenswet as the kryptonite-averse hero who also goes by Clark Kent. (Read David Ehrlich’s IndieWire review here.)
Anne was in New York this week to join Ryan in-studio at the IndieWire offices to discuss the movie and more, Ryan having just seen it at the Regal Times Square during the first afternoon 2 p.m. public screening. Superman director James Gunn perceives his protagonist's goodness as rebellious in an age of unrelenting outrage.
Speaking with Den of Geek about reinventing Superman ahead of his movie's premiere, Gunn drew attention to the fact that Superman's defining trait, more than any one power, is his humanity and willingness to show kindness while fighting crime. One scene in particular has Superman, as Clark Kent, jokingly describing himself to Lois Lane as "punk rock," but the filmmaker takes this belief seriously, contrasting the Man of Steel's sincerity with toxic online discourse today.
"Punk rock is going against the grain. We live in an age where everything is so mean and so ugly," he explained. "Everyone is screaming at one another. Right now the most punk rock thing you can do is be kind, be raw, be open, look out for the person who needs looking out for, be unapologetically earnest.

Former Superman actor Dean Cain, notable for his stint in Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, has addressed the conservative backlash surrounding James Gunn’s Superman following the latter’s immigration remarks. The controversy sparked after Gunn described the obvious of Superman being an immigrant, stressing “basic human kindness is a value and is something we have lost.“
Chiming in with other right-wing detractors of the forthcoming feature, in an interview with TMZ, Cain claimed Gunn’s statement about Superman being an immigrant will hurt the movie’s box-office legs.
Dean Cain claims James Gunn’s Immigration remarks could hinder Superman‘s box office
Given the current political climate, it’s no surprise that several right-wing commentators weren’t too thrilled about Superman‘s immigrant connotations. Dean Cain has now expressed his doubts about Hollywood making Superman woke, as he drew analogies with Disney’s live-action Snow White remake.

This article contains spoilers for "Superman."
Superman, aka Kal-El of Krypton, aka Clark Kent of Metropolis and Smallville, Kansas, has existed as a pop culture figure for 87 years. His image, name, and origin story have become so ingrained in pop culture that he's achieved iconic status. His costume's "S" shield logo is instantly recognizable around the world, and while the character has enjoyed a variety of super powers throughout his long and complex history in the pages of comic books and on the big and small screens, everyone knows that Superman can fly and he stands for truth, justice, and the American way. Perhaps not necessarily the American way as it is, but the ideals that the country is supposed to represent.
While there are constants in his character ever since his creation by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster in 1938, there have been many more differences, as seen in the...

James Gunn’s recent comments to The Sunday Times about his upcoming Superman movie being “the story of America” and rooted in “an immigrant that came from other places” have ignited backlash from conservative circles. Critics, including former Donald Trump advisor Kellyanne Conway, accused Gunn of injecting ideology into the iconic superhero, with some branding the film as “Superwoke.” Gunn simply stated,
I mean, Superman is the story of America. An immigrant that came from other places and populated the country, but for me it is mostly a story that says basic human kindness is a value and is something we have lost. Yes, it plays differently.
But it’s about human kindness and obviously, there will be jerks out there who are just not kind and will take it as offensive just because it is about kindness. But screw them.

James Gunn’s hatred for the repetitive depiction of superhero origins led to the Dcu launching from a point where Clark Kent has already garnered a reputation fighting crime. Moreover, Gunn’s fealty to the comic book source material makes his Superman a familiar hero placed within the unfamiliar setting of 21st-century society.
However, the century-old arc of Superman arriving on Earth as a baby has finally been revamped in DC All In Special. The Absolute Superman storyline, penned by writer Jason Aaron, focuses on a Kal-El who never escaped a dying Krypton. Instead, he arrives (or rather crashes) on Earth as an adult, and the story takes over from there.
Gunn’s Superman, which takes its storyline from the original comics of Joe Shuster and Jerry Siegel, differs radically from the recently launched arc of Absolute Superman. Read on to find out how.

Superman soars. For a long time, DC Studios didn’t quite know what to do with the Big Blue Boy Scout, judging that Superman’s values don’t always gel with the gritty, darker times of today. That’s how we got the Snyderverse, making Superman into something that he wasn’t. Granted, that’s been the issue in adapting the character ever since Joe Shuster and Jerry Siegel came up with the immigrant alien who wants to help humanity.
But James Gunn knew the score, just as Richard Donner did before him – Superman is the constant, and it’s only the times that change. For Superman to stay relevant, one only needs to understand that the principles of the character never shift because those ideals make Superman into the steadfast hero who has stood the test of time for more than 80 years.

Reviews for Superman are finally out now, and fans have already begun comparisons to superhero films from various eras. James Gunn’s debut Dcu film has soared out of the gate with a strong “certified fresh” 87% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, but it still falls short of the MCU in one major way. This 87% — which is subject to change, but still comes from 105 reviews at the time of writing — falls below the 94% earned by the original Iron Man on Rotten Tomatoes. Gunn, Peter Safran, and other Dcu studio heads are certainly hoping that Superman can launch a franchise with the same success that Iron Man did, and although it falls slightly short of the 2008 MCU film, this likely won’t hinder its ability to do exactly that.

Superman isn’t just the most famous superhero in history, but one of the most iconic characters in the history of modern American media. The history of DC comics was built on the world that Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster created back in the 1930s, which has continued in new and exciting ways throughout thousands of subsequent issues. Although Superman was depicted on television by George Reeves and later appeared in many animated shows, his transition to the big screen marked the first instance in which Hollywood took notice of the potential that comic book cinema had. Christopher Reeve had many other great roles, but for most viewers, he would always be known as the definitive Clark Kent.
After the four films that Reeve starred in, Superman had a somewhat difficult path back to the cinema, as many potential reboots were considered. Brandon Routh eventually took on the role...

From his breakout as writer-director, Slither, to Guardians of the Galaxy, James Gunn has made it his mission to lighten the oppressive darkness of so much contemporary sci-fi with irreverent humor and the exhilaration of an unabashed genre geek. For his first entry as new co-chair — alongside producer Peter Safran — of DC Studios, Gunn brings his signature approach to Superman. The result is very much a comic-book action-adventure but one with a warm human heart. It reveals an obvious love for Richard Donner’s 1978 event movie headlined by Christopher Reeve, and for 1981’s arguably even better Superman II, without sliding into reverential self-seriousness.
That was one of the weaknesses of Bryan Singer’s joyless and swiftly forgotten 2006 effort, Superman Returns, while by contrast, distancing itself so strenuously from the Donner model was the fatal flaw of Zack Snyder’s turgid Man of Steel in 2013, though that doom-and-gloom saga has its champions.

The new Superman movie is stirring up a lot of talk, even before it hits theaters everywhere. The controversy started after director James Gunn called Superman “an immigrant” in an interview with The Times of London.
Gunn explained that for him, Superman’s story is really about America. He said the movie shows how an immigrant came from another place and became part of the country. But more than that, Gunn said the heart of the film is kindness. “Basic human kindness is a value and is something we have lost,” he told the paper.
He also admitted the film touches on “politics” and “morality,” and he knows some people won’t like that. “There are jerks out there who are just not kind… but screw them,” Gunn said.
The idea of Superman as an immigrant isn’t new. The character’s creators, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, were both children of Jewish immigrants.

Sean Gunn Responds to Maga Backlash Over “Superman Is an Immigrant” Remark: “We Love Our Immigrants”
The new Superman movie hasn’t even hit theaters everywhere yet, and it’s already become the center of a political storm, especially over director James Gunn’s comments calling Superman “an immigrant.”
In an interview with The Times of London, James Gunn explained what the story of Superman means to him. He said it’s “the story of America” and that the film shows how “an immigrant came from other places and populated the country.”
But what matters most to him, he said, is that the movie is really about kindness. “Basic human kindness is a value and is something we have lost,” Gunn told the paper. He admitted the story does involve “politics” and “morality,” and he knows not everyone will be happy about that. In fact, he added bluntly, “There are jerks out there who are just not kind… but screw them.”

Long established as an allegory for the immigrant experience, especially when viewed through the personal histories of Superman’s comic book co-creators — second-generation Jewish immigrants Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster — DC Studios co-ceo James Gunn said his forthcoming film entry of Kal-El keeps in tune with the original 1938-created vision.

Although the classic Superman's red trunks are canon, designed by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster in 1938, fans have been clamoring for James Gunn to put Superman back in them. Zack Snyder, lauded for his illustrious vision in film, decided to remove the red trunks for Henry Cavill's Man of Steel.
His reason was sound. Snyder has said that he tried “a billion different versions” but could never make the classic design work. Although the trunks were an iconic facet of Superman's suit, Snyder thought they didn't fit the tone of a Kryptonian suit designed for functionality and practicality.

The latest trailer for Superman was heavy on action, and in a couple of blink-and-you'd-miss-them scenes, Ultraman's true face is seemingly revealed.
By now, we know enough to posit that Lex Luthor creates the villain and has him pose as the Hammer of Boravia to turn Metropolis against its greatest protector. We've also been hearing chatter for months that Ultraman is a Superman clone, something potentially confirmed by his and the Hammer's ability to use Heat Vision.
With that information, the prevailing theory among fans has been that Ultraman will be a deformed version of Superman, and perhaps even an early iteration of Bizarro. However, a closer look at the unmasked villain suggests filmmaker James Gunn is heading down a much weirder route.

Superman is one of the most argued-about characters in comic book fiction. From “Umm actually, in Injustice…” to “Goku would go Super Saiyan and then…” and also “He is bland. He has too many powers!” which leads to the biggest misconception: “Superman is boring.”
Wrong. That is the simplest way to put it.
To go further, we need to understand why we are getting a new take on Superman this summer with James Gunn's upcoming movie.
Superman has been misrepresented in all the types of media for a few decades now.
It's time to remember who Superman really is
We have had the darker take of Superman's story on the big screen with Man of Steel by Zack Snyder, where Superman snaps Zod's neck to save civilians. Many discussions have happened since then about this take and the DC Extended Universe. The Dceu is no longer around, having suffered numerous box-office failures.

There are many characters within the comic book medium that we can classify as "superhero" but not all of them accrue the following or get the same levels of attention that some of their more famous counterparts get. Characters like Superman or Batman are known the world over, but general audiences may not know every character to ever appear in DC Comics. For example, a character like The Spectre has often flown under the radar, remaining one of DC's most underrated heroes.
The Spectre has become one of my personal favorite characters in DC Comics, and the comic that started that love for the character came in his own self-titled adventure from the 1990s. Today, let's take a journey through realms unimaginable and pain unbearable in this underrated gem of a comic.
