Vieques, Puerto Rico: Sharpton was protesting against US Defense Department bombing target practice on the island of Vieques at the Roosevelt Roads Naval Air Station. Sharpton was jailed for 90 days on trespassing charges while protesting and was held in a Puerto Rican jail for two days before being moved to the Metropolitan Federal Detention Center in Brooklyn, New York City, NY on May 25, 2001, and given Federal Bureau of Prisons ID# 21458-069. He was released on August 17, 2001. Due in part to the protests of Sharpton and others (including Jesse Jackson, Edward James Olmos, Robert F. Kennedy Jr.), President Bill Clinton executed an agreement with the then Governor of Puerto Rico (Rosello) to close Roosevelt Roads in 2003). (mai 2001)
