Former Major League Baseball pitcher Daniel Serafini has been found guilty of the murder of his father-in-law and the attempted murder of his mother-in-law.
On Monday, July 14, a jury in Placer County convicted Serafini of first-degree murder, attempted murder and burglary.
On June 5, 2021, Serafini, 51, fatally shot Robert Spohr, 70, at his home in Lake Tahoe, in the community of Homewood. Serafini also shot Spohr’s wife, Wendy Wood, 68, twice in the head. Wood survived the wounds, but she killed herself in 2023.
After a two-year investigation, Serafini was arrested in connection with the attack in October 2023, along with his nanny and lover, Samantha Scott.

In February, Scott pleaded guilty to being an accessory, admitting that she drove Serafini to Spohr and Wood’s home on the day of the incident. She is awaiting her sentencing.
