Was trying to get out of the shadow of being the son of Dusty Rhodes when Vince McMahon approached him about the Goldust gimmick. McMahon stated the character would be edgy and have an androgynous quality. Rhodes quickly agreed to the gimmick despite not knowing what the word "androgynous" meant.
