The 2025 Emmys have arrived, and television’s biggest celebration kicks off with the Creative Arts Emmys to be presented this weekend, honoring the year’s best in artistic and technical achievement. Last year, Shōgun dominated the competition with 14 Creative Arts victories before adding four more at the Primetime ceremony, setting a new all-time record with 18 total wins, including Best Drama Series.

This year, the Apple TV+ drama Severance leads all series with 27 nominations, followed by The Studio at the top of the comedy race with 23, and The Penguin dominating the limited-series field with 24.

“That was when [Oscilloscope co-founder] Adam Yauch was still alive and [A24 co-founder] David Fenkel was still there,” Grashaw said. “The year we were at Sundance, I want to say 30 films sold. It was crazy.”

Colin Farrell did an excellent job playing The Penguinin the HBO crime drama series of the same name. However, the actor recently avoided answering a question about a dark aspect of the story.

During an appearance on Variety Actors on Actors with Danny DeVito, Farrell seemed uncomfortable when DeVito stated that his Penguin from Batman Returns didn't have any brothers. "I'd rather not talk about [it]," he said. "It's a touchy point... That's a touchy point in the story accused of terrible things I didn't... had no part in at all" the actor added.

In HBO's The Penguin, a follow-up to Matt Reeves' The Batman starring Robert Pattinson, a young version of Farrell's titular villain is seen playing in the underground trolley system beneath Gotham City. When his brothers taunt him by hiding in an overflow tunnel that the young Oswald cannot reach, he takes out his frustrations by locking them inside.

The Penguin proved to be a big hit for HBO and Warner Bros./DC Studios, and was met with rare levels of acclaim and awards recognition for a comic book-based project. With this in mind, a second season would seem like a foregone conclusion, but The Penguin happens to find itself in an unusual position.

Now officially listed as a limited series, The Penguin serves as a set-up for Matt Reeves' The Batman sequel, which we haven't had any official updates on in quite a while. Reports indicate that the movie's script hasn't even been completed yet, which likely hinders any potential movement on The Penguin season 2.

There's also the question of whether star Colin Farrell will even want to return as Oz Cobb. Though the actor is expected to appear in The Batman sequel, he didn't sound too overjoyed at the prospect of donning the prosthetics again during a 2024 interview.

HBO will submit four cast members from The Penguin for Emmy consideration, Gold Derby has confirmed.

The film follows a troubled foster child who is given a final chance to make good when she is sent to live with a kind couple in rural Tennessee. But she soon learns that her foster family is not quite what they seem as she is drawn into their world of snake-handling worship, where even holy people can do evil things.

Theo Rossi, Devon Bostick, and Claire Forlani round out the key cast. Mackenzie Munro directed the film from Alex Runnels’ screenplay. The film was produced by Walk Like A Duck’s Rob Goodrich and Jason Armstrong alongside Kari Skogland. Munro and Amelia Baker served as executive producers for Blonde Mamba.

In an interview with Variety, Safran and Gunn provided tons of updates concerning the many future projects planned for the DC Universe, including HBO's The Penguin. Though the show was intended as a miniseries, The Penguin surpassed all expectations both critically and in terms of viewership, which has led to speculation that Oswald Cobb's story could continue on for at least one more season. Bruton was charged in the early 2000s for a manslaughter conviction from a fatal hit and run in Jacksonville, Fl. The movie will follow Bruton’s journey through the correctional system.

In the wake of his release and moving to California, Bruton turned to making the YouTube video series Bryan Bruton Crazy Prison Stories. Bruton’s videos canvases life in the Florida prison system from, from how inmates obtain and conceal drugs, alcohol and weapons to cutting the window out of one’s jail cell.

Grashaw also wrote the screenplay. Bruton recently wrapped production in Gulfport and Biloxi, Mississippi.

Peter Stanley-Ward and Natalie Conway penned the script for Play Dead, which is produced by horror icon Sam Raimi. There is no official release window for Play Dead, nor is there any casting information available at this time. The Penguin had a great night at the Critics' Choice Awards, picking up two major acting wins. This follows a plethora of previous accolades garnered by the hit HBO show.

The event, which marked the 30th annual ceremony for the Critics' Choice Awards, was held in Santa Monica, California, on Feb. 7. The Penguin was up for four awards, ultimately picking up big wins for two. It was up for Best Limited Series, an award that went to Netflix's Baby Reindeer. In a January 25 X post, Luke Cage executive producer and Creed II scribe Cheo Hodari Coker responded to a fan post lauding the series' storytelling. "Glad y'all are finally discovering it," Coker wrote. "And what we had planned for Season 3 was even better... all Public Enemy song titles as the thematics, starting with 'Public Enemy #1' and ending with 'Rebel Without a Pause." When asked how far in the development process the third season got before the series was shelved, Coker responded, "Six episodes written, 8 outlined, 13 projected...and nope, I ain't saying sh*t."

Marvel's upcoming Captain America: Brave New World is on track to celebrate a nine-figure, four-day opening weekend when it hits theaters next month.
