Last month, it was announced that Colbert would have a guest role on the CBS police procedural dramedy Elsbeth. Details revealed he'd play a fictional late-night TV host named Scotty Bristol in a season 3 episode. Now we know more about the plot as well as which longtime Colbert collaborator and fellow late-night TV star is joining the Late Show host on Elsbeth.

The modern-day retelling of the biblical tale from the Book of Ruth is coming to Netflix on Sept. 26, and the streamer has unveiled a first look with the release of its official trailer.

Directed by Alanna Brown, “Ruth & Boaz” is a story about the up-and-coming Atlanta hip-hop artist Ruth Moably, who “gives up the glamorous life to start anew in rural Tennessee, where she cares for Naomi, her surrogate mother and meets the man of her dreams,” according to the logline.

The film stars Serayah McNeill, Tyler Lepley and Phylicia Rashad. Rounding out the cast are Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, Walnette Santiago, Nijah Brenea, James Lee Thomas, Jermaine Dupri, Lecrae Moore, Christopher Broughton and Yung Joc.

“Ruth & Boaz” marks the first film from Tyler Perry and DeVon Franklin’s faith-based partnership. The script is penned by Michael Elliot & Cory Tynan.

However, Colbert is appearing on a different CBS show this fall thanks to his casting in the Elsbeth season 3 premiere. He is playing the fictional late-night TV host Scotty Bristol and filmed the role two weeks before CBS released the controversial news about The Late Show.

Carrie Preston’s CBS procedural Elsbeth is adding Julia Fox to its roster of season 3 guest stars, with the actor set to play a social-media figure whose brand is built around bereavement. CBS describes Fox’s character, Raquel Drabowski, as “a Staten Island widow turned upscale ‘grief influencer’ and reality star.”

The new season begins with a special Sunday premiere on October 12 at 9:30/8:30c, then shifts to its regular Thursday slot on October 16 at 10/9c, part of the network’s fall rollout that pairs Elsbeth behind Matlock.

On Tuesday (August 12), Carrie Preston was seen on the set with her co-stars including Wendell Pierce in New York City.

There were some guest stars also seen, including David Cross, Christina Brucato, and Danielle Troiano. Based on the costumes with a Raggedy Ann and Doctor, it looks like this could be for a Halloween-themed episode!

Unfortunately, if you look through the set photos, you’ll notice a former series regular is missing. That’s because Carra Patterson, who starred in the past two seasons as Officer Kaya Blanke, is exiting the series.

There are also two more cast exits for Elsbeth season three that have been confirmed at this time.

Per Deadline, Skydance Chair of TV Media George Cheeks said in a press conference that "The challenge in late night is that the advertising marketplace is in significant secular decline. After it was revealed that CBS canceled the comedian’s long-running late night talk show, The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, The Hollywood Reporter learned on Sunday that Colbert has landed another hosting gig on a separate CBS show.

Colbert is set to make a guest appearance on an upcoming season three episode of the crime comedy Elsbeth, which returns Oct. 12. Vulture reported that Colbert will play the host of a fictional late night talk show called Way Late With Scotty Bristol.

Elsbeth, starring Carrie Preston, Wendell Pierce and Carra Patterson, is a murder-of-the-week show. It follows astute but unconventional attorney Elsbeth Tascioni (Preston), who utilizes her singular point of view to make unique observations and corner brilliant criminals alongside the NYPD.

Colbert’s episode was filmed this week; however, his guest appearance has been months in the making.

Primetime series take months of lead time from conceiving an episode to its filming, so Elsbeth’s late-night storyline had been in the works long before CBS announced two and a half weeks ago that The Late Show will be ending next May.

Carrie revealed that while filming the Elsbeth season 2 finale, she received test results for a mole on her cheek. The results came back positive for basal cell carcinoma, a common form of skin cancer. She revealed that while filming the finale, Carrie‘s co-stars were asking what she planned to do after filming wrapped.

“I was like, “Oh my God, what am I doing on my hiatus? I’m going to have to get it removed,’” Carrie said of the skin cancer.

While attending last weekend’s 78th Tony Awards, the Emmy-winning actress teased who from Broadway she’d like to work with on an upcoming season of the CBS procedural comedy drama.

“There’s so many people on this red carpet that I’ve met tonight or that I know. I always ask them, ‘Do you wanna be on the show? Because I’ll pass it along,'” she told Us Weekly at the awards show.

Preston added, “So I saw Brooke Shields tonight. I saw Celia Keenan-Bolger tonight. Of course Cole Escola. I’d like to see if we can round up pretty much everybody on Broadway and get them on.”

Carrie Preston didn’t think she’d ever be headlining her first television series, much less as a character she’s played off and on for 15 years. The seasoned actress, whose small-screen resume is filled with memorable supporting parts in “True Blood” and “Claws,” first played Elsbeth Tascioni in 2010 in “The Good Wife.” She was an eccentric but brilliant lawyer with unconventional methods of solving tough cases. The character’s unique tics, scatterbrained quips and sunny disposition made her a fan favorite, winning Preston her first guest-actress Emmy in 2013. She reprised the role in the spinoff “The Good Fight,” where she directed two episodes.

After hosting the Tony Awards, Cynthia Erivo and crew headed to the Russian Tea Room in New York, where award winners and celebrities decided to shed the formalities of the evening and skip to the celebration.

“I’m sick of talking. I think we should all dance now,” Erivo announced to the starry crowd, after being handed a mic while sitting on top of a banquette in a short black taffeta dress.

At the party, aptly named Cyn City, the Wicked star led a crowd up to the second floor of the famed New York venue, where a dance circle formed around her as Abba’s “Gimme Gimme” played. Dancers included Julianne Hough; Danielle Brooks, who starred in The Color Purple on Broadway with Erivo; Adrienne Warren, currently starring in The Last Five Years on Broadway; Dylan Mulvaney; and Lena Waithe, as the music transitioned to Beyoncé tunes and other pop hits.

The 2025 Tony Awards are being handed out Sunday night.

The first winners were announced during the Darren Criss- and Renée Elise Goldberry-hosted The Tony Awards: Act One preshow streaming on Paramount’s free streaming service Pluto TV from 3:40-5 p.m. Pt/6:40-8 p.m. Et. Criss is a first-time Tony nominee for his role in Maybe Happy Ending, and Goldsberry won a Tony for originating the role of Angelica Schuyler in Hamilton, which will celebrate its 10th anniversary with a performance featuring members of the original Broadway cast on the 2025 awards show.

The main ceremony, hosted by Tony, Emmy and Grammy winner Cynthia Erivo, will run from 5-8 p.m. Pt/8-11 p.m. Et, live on CBS and Paramount+ with Showtime, from New York’s Radio City Music Hall.
