Jeff Goldblum Shows Off His Piano Skills on Jazz Classic ‘A Baptist Beat’
Image
Jeff Goldblum, a gifted pianist in addition to his acting skills, showcases his talents on the 88 keys on his new rendition of the jazz classic “A Baptist Beat,” the latest single off the actor’s upcoming EP Plays Well With Others.

The EP focuses on standards Goldblum considers “the best songs ever written,” with the Hank Mobley gem “A Baptist Beat” among those six selections. On Goldblum’s rendition, he summons his inner Wynton Kelly — the pianist who played on the 1961 original — while accompanied by his longtime big band, The Mildred Snitzer Orchestra.

‘Schmigadoon!’ Creator Cinco Paul Reflects on First Comedy Script ‘Band of Gold’ — and Still Hopes to Get It Made
Image
In Variety’s feature, The One That Got Away, Emmy nominees reflect on one of their projects that never saw the light of day, was canceled too soon or that they’d like to revisit some day.

Picture it: Southern California, 1994.

Cinco Paul is fresh out of USC School of Cinematic Arts, churning out his first post-grad comedy script — an homage to screwball comedies including “What’s Up, Doc?” and “Bringing Up Baby,” called “Band of Gold.”

“At the time, there were big splashy spec sales happening all over the place and this was mine,” he says. “It kind of launched my career, but unfortunately, it never got made.”

Nearly 30 years later, Paul, the creator and Emmy-nominated lyricist of Apple TV+’s musical love letter “Schmigadoon!,” has never lost his wistful fondness for the script, which had been bought by Sony and even attached a few directors.

Had it made it to the screen,...

Lamont Dozier Dies: Hit-Making Motown Mastermind Was 81
Image
Lamont Dozier, who along with his songwriting and producing partners brothers Brian and Eddie Holland was a pioneer and driving force of Detroit’s beloved “Motown Sound” of the 1960s and 1970s, died Monday in Arizona. He was 81.

His death was announced on Instagram today by his son Lamont Dozier Jr. No cause or additional details were given, with Lamont Jr. writing only, “Rest in Heavenly Peace, Dad!”

The famous Holland-Dozier-Holland team was the force behind such iconic Motown hits as “Heatwave” by Martha and The Vandellas, numerous hits by The Supremes, including “Where Did Our Love Go” and “Baby Love,” scores of songs by The Four Tops, The Isley Brothers (“This Old Heart of Mine”) and Marvin Gaye (“Can I Get A Witness?”.

While Dozier and Brian Holland tended to focus on musical arrangement and production,...

Timmy Thomas Dies: Singer-Songwriter Of 1972 Hit Anti-War Anthem ‘Why Can’t We Live Together’ Was 77
Image
Timmy Thomas, the singer, songwriter and keyboardist whose minimalist yet urgent 1970s hit anti-war anthem “Why Can’t We Live Together” eventually would sell more than 2 million copies, died March 11, at a hospital in Miami. He was 77.

Hollywood & Media Deaths In 2022: Photo Gallery

His family announced his death on Facebook, and wife Lillie (Brown) Thomas told The New York Times that the cause was cancer.

Accompanied only by his Lowrey organ and an early drum machine set to a staccato, bossa nova beat, Thomas delivered a fervent, melancholy vocal performance calling for an end to war as the conflict in Vietnam dragged on. In a refrain that was as catchy as it was pleading, Thomas sang, “Everybody wants to live together/Why can’t we live together?”

Released in August 1972, the reached No. 1 on R&b charts and No. 3 on the Billboard Pop Singles chart in early 1973.

Although Thomas...

Lamont Dozier Remembers Mary Wilson: ‘She Was the Glue That Kept the Supremes Together’
Image
From 1964 to at least 1967, the Supremes helped define the sound of Motown and, by extension, the sound of mainstream American pop. The trio worked closely with the songwriter-producer team of Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier, and Eddie Holland to perfect a musical blueprint; an ideal blend of hard and soft — drums like jackhammers, cymbals like sword fights, and harmonies like whipped cream. Diana Ross sang lead, of course, while Mary Wilson and Florence Ballard handled backup, pulling from a formidable, constantly shifting arsenal of “whoa-ohs,” “whoo-oohs,” “yeah-yeahs,” “baby-baby’s,” and “help,...

'American Idol': What Will Jessica Sanchez Sing After Near-Exit?
Gil Kaufman and James Montgomery debate which 'Then and Now' hits the 'Idol' top seven should tackle.

By Gil Kaufman and James Montgomery

Jessica Sanchez performs on "American Idol"

The "American Idol" top seven took on current hits last week, and look how well things turned out! Uh, wait, never mind.

Anyway, after Jessica Sanchez escaped elimination thanks to the judges' save (which officially marked the first time this season they've actually done something right), "Idol" producers decided to up the ante for Wednesday night's (April 18) show by letting the contestants sing both a #1 from the past decade — since it worked so well before — and a classic soul tune.

Yes, it's "Then and Now" week on "Idol," which, come to think of it, is a pretty apt way of viewing the show's steady decline. It also means we're going to see the usual front-runners strut their stuff: Sanchez will dominate a Beyoncé hit,...

"We Are the World" Remix: Details & Artist List
Never in a million years would you imagine pop princess Miley Cyrus singing alongside the soulful Natalie Cole, or even American Idol (TV) judge Randy Jackson belting it out next to Couple's Retreat (2009) Vince Vaughn. But it did. It all went down Monday night, at famed producer Quincy Jones' studio in La, to benefit the earthquake in Haiti. Everyone from the Jonas Brothers to Faith Evans showed up to lend their vocals to "We Are the World" remix. 25 years ago, Quincy Jones, Lionel Richie and the late Michael Jackson rallied an insane number of famous singers, actors, and performers to lay the tracks for 'We Are the World" written by Richie and Jackson and produced by Jones. The year was 1985 -- big hair was a must have, neon colors drove the fashion industry, and in one La music studio history was made. To help stop famine in Africa,...

Los Angeles — When it came time to record the 25th-anniversary remake of "We Are the World," the legendary African-famine relief benefit's co-writer and producer, Lionel Richie, said he wanted to approach the project from a modern perspective. That might explain why none of the singers from the 1985 single were in the house for Monday night's marathon sessions, which took place in the same studios where the original song was laid down.

Instead of Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Cyndi Lauper and the late Michael Jackson (whose previously recorded voice, however, will be heard on the tune), the 2010 version will be headlined by Justin Bieber, Lil Wayne, Wyclef Jean, Josh Groban and Will.I.Am. It features a newly penned hip-hop break written by the Black Eyed Peas...

David Gest: Blames Himself For His Plastic Surgery
The 56-year-old TV star-and-concert promoter was reported yesterday (08.12.09) to have been encouraged by his late friend Michael Jackson to have several operations, but insists it was all his own decision. David – whose cosmetic procedures include two facelifts and a nose realignment operation – said: “On ‘Celebrity Come Dine With Me’, I discuss the plastic surgery I had done between 1980-1981 and blame only myself for being so foolish, especially not Michael Jackson nor anyone else. I was an idiot. I look back at that time and think of myself as being so stupid, and was very appreciative of Michael’s support and being there when I went through all that.” David appears on the Christmas special of the British dinner party TV show ‘Celebrity Come Dine With Me’. The flamboyant star also revealed he had his cheek implants removed after having a surgery epiphany. He told Bang Showbiz: “It was my...

Freda Payne, Thelma Houston, and K.C. Casey on American Idol final 7 results show
Tuesday night on American idol results show, there were Freda Payne, Thelma Houston, and K.C. Casey apart from the contestants. But the performances were pretty bad. If they were contenders, Simon Cowell would have definitely criticized.

Freda Payne performed ¨Band of Gold¨ after Lil Rounds and Anoop Desai were eliminated during American idol final 7 results show. She looked superb, and was full of energy, but her vocals were not up to the mark. In fact, she was pathetic with the song. Then came Thelma Houston in a too-small yellow dress and sang ¨Don´t Leave Me This Way.¨ It was a little better than Payne´s performance, ....

Video: David Archuleta Singing 'Touch My Hand' at 'American Idol'
David Archuleta appeared on "American Idol" stage on April 22, singing "Touch My Hand" at the result show of the Fox's reality singing competition. He took the stage near the end of the show before Anoop Desai was eliminated.

Other musical guests at the result show were Freda Payne, Thelma Houston and Harry Wayne Casey of Kc & The Sunshine Band. During the night, Freda sang a medley of several songs, which included "Band of Gold", Thelma delivered "Don't Leave Me This Way", and Harry performed "Get Down Tonight".

In addition to the live appearances from those stars, the Idol stage was also glittered with a performance from the 5 remaining contestants, Matt Giraud, Allison Iraheta, Adam Lambert, Kris Allen and Danny Gokey, as well as 2 just-booted contestants, Anoop Desai and Lil Rounds. They were dancing and singing to Jackson Five's 1979 hit single "Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)".

'American Idol': Lil Rounds and Anoop Desai Go Bye-Bye
"American Idol" found its top five on Wednesday night -- but first, voters told two hopefuls to disco on home! Host Ryan Seacrest wasted no time in revealing Lil Rounds as the first eliminated competitor. For her swan song, Lil reprised "I'm Every Woman" -- and, perhaps in a case of too little, too late, the judges gave her a rave review. "You sang brilliant tonight!" Paula Abdul enthused. "Lil, baby, you're just on your way," Randy Jackson said, getting Kara DioGuardi's agreement. And Simon Cowell, arguably Lil's biggest critic on the panel, said, "I'm actually a fan of you. I think you made some bad decisions, but people do that." Then, Seacrest revealed that either Anoop Desai or Allison Iraheta would be getting the boot as well. "You both have awesome voices," said returning finalist David Archuleta, who performed his single "Touch My Hand." "Know that it's not over even after this.

Lil Rounds and Anoop Desai Get the Ax in 'American Idol'
And then there were five. "American Idol" has chopped out two contestants from its eight season after giving Matt Giraud a second chance last week through the one-time Judges' Save. Those meeting the end of the journey are Memphis native Lil Rounds and Wild Card pick Anoop Desai.

Both Rounds and Desai stumbled on Disco night. The former sang Chaka Khan's "I'm Every Woman" and got butchered by the judges, with Simon Cowell predicting that she's going home. Desai, who got the privilege of performing last, sang Donna Summer's "Dim All the Lights" and Simon thought it was his worst performance.

Ryan Seacrest was very fast in announcing that Rounds was out from the competition. She was called first to be in the bottom three and immediately told that she did not make it. "I'm actually going to miss your family screaming at us every week," Simon commented on her departure.

David Archuleta Set to Perform at 'American Idol'
