- In 1951 she had a job wrapping packages at Saks Fifth Avenue department store in Beverly Hills when she was spotted by a talent scout for Paramount, who signed her to a contract.
- Later ran an art gallery
- Married briefly in 1956 to actor Dale Robertson, Mary remarried in 1962 to a Los Angeles lighting fixture retailer. They had one daughter named Stephanie (B. 1964).
- Look-a-likes of Murphy and Marlon Brando as their characters in L'équipée sauvage (1953) were used in the mid-'90s to advertise motorcycles. Oddly enough, the motorcycles advertised were Yamahas, and most of the motorcycles in the film were Triumphs and Harley-Davidsons.
- According to an in-depth article on Mary by Joe Collura for the November 2010 issue of "Classic Images," Mary was working as a package wrapper at Saks Fifth Avenue in Beverly Hills when she was stopped having lunch at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel and discovered for films by Milton Lewis, Paramount head of talent.
- [speaking about shooting Sitting Bull (1954) in Mexico] J. Carrol Naish was a hoot! He didn't want to be there, and they wouldn't let him go home. He played Sitting Bull, and one day he was riding his horse and the horse was barely trotting, just walking along, and J. told them he fell off his horse and had to go home, and so they sent him home! He got his way after all.
- I guess I am one of those rare exceptions because I had not planned on becoming an actress and never desired to be in motion pictures.
- People will ask me which of my movies is my favorite, and usually I will tell them that I like different films for different reasons, be it the part, or the locale, or the cast.
