Harvey Miller
Film director and producer whose hit comedies, co-written with his second wife Nancy Meyers, drew on their relationship
Charles Shyer, who has died aged 83, co-wrote a string of bubbly and often female-focused comedies with his second wife, Nancy Meyers. The couple, so closely linked that they were known affectionately in the industry as the Shmeyers, were not yet married when their first script together turbo-boosted Goldie Hawn’s career: the star found her biggest success playing a pampered young widow duped into joining the army in Private Benjamin (1980), which Shyer and Meyers also produced.
The screenplay, co-written with Harvey Miller and nominated for an Oscar, had been turned down by most of Hollywood. In the wake of its success, an executive at Paramount, which had rejected the script, sent Shyer a letter admitting: “When we fuck up, we fuck up big.”...

Nancy Meyers, the highest-grossing female writer-director-producer in Hollywood’s box office history, will be the recipient of the WGA West’s 2020 Laurel Award for Screenwriting Achievement.
Diane Keaton, who starred in Meyers’ 2003 film Something’s Gotta Give, will present the award at the 72nd annual Writers Guild Awards ceremony on February 1 in Los Angeles. The award is presented to guild members who have “advanced the literature of motion pictures and made outstanding contributions to the profession of the screenwriter.”
“Nancy Meyers is the writer many of us aspire to be – her scripts walk the line of blending challenging ideas with comedic situations, dramatic themes with hard jokes,” said WGA West president David A. Goodman. “Her work consistently proves that movies about the foibles and frailties of humans will be commercially successful in the hands of a master of her craft. The Wgaw Board of Directors is thrilled to give her this award.

As I made my way through the world, I was struck by how minimal everything was, yet it still managed to be affecting. I had no clue what I was doing, no idea what my purpose was in this world, but I kept moving forward all the same, compelled by the clever puzzles and the underlying sense that the game would continue to exist regardless if the player was there.
I never finished Ether One, but I am forever thankful I chose to play it. Since then, White Paper Games has been a permanent fixture on my radar. When I looked at the slate of games set to release this month, The Occupation was high on my list. Again, I had a small...

An inexperienced cast and crew try to rush this atmospheric heist flick and the result is a visually striking film noir that runs out of gas. Primed and pumped up for that next cruel and gritty, dark and dirty, “The world is no damned good” noir mystery thriller, you are a bit taken aback when the lead character, Harvey Miller (Luke Treadaway), shows up on the screen. There are two problems. The first is that Luke looks too good and the second is that Harvey looks too bad. "Nods to The Usual Suspects and the Oceans franchise." That critic's quote should be enough to pique your interest, but the rest of the trailer is pretty good, too. Today's trailer is for a UK heist film titled Wasteland which first premiered up at Tiff last year. It stars "hot" British actor Luke Treadaway, seen in Attack the Block & Clash of the Titans, who leads a group of friends in a robbery of the local kingpin. This looks like a polished, entertaining heist thriller on top of a good revenge flick, I'm curious to check it out even though I missed it at the festivals. The cast includes Matthew Lewis, Iwan Rheon, Vanessa Kirby and Timothy Spall. Watch the theatrical trailer for Rowan Athale's Wasteland, also in high def from Apple: After being released from prison for a crime he didn't commit, Harvey Miller (Luke Treadaway) has revenge on his mind.

If the movies are indication, Britain is completely crammed with wise-taking criminals, scheming together to rob banks and beat people up and look fantastic doing it. And the latest addition to the wave of British crime films is Wasteland, coming from Oscilloscope Laboratories both on VOD and in theaters in New York and Los Angeles today. You can also watch it online today in any number of places, including iTunes, Amazon, Vudu and Google Play. In this clip you can see our hero Harvey Miller, played by Luke Treadaway, attempting to make a move on a girl in a club, played by Vanessa Kirby. Turns out the entire scene isn't really what it seems-- she's actually his ex, seeing him for the first time since he went to prison. Every six months or so it seems the British film industry cranks out another modestly budgeted crime flick. Usually identified by a cast of recognizable but not quite famous faces, a desaturated color scheme, working class setting and familiar plot machinations, these are comfort food for genre fans that provide a distraction for a couple of hours and little else more. However, every now and then a film breaks out of the mould, offering up a higher standard of filmmaking verve and storytelling inspiration to become something that stretches beyond its genre trappings. "Wasteland" is not one of those movies. Starring Luke Treadaway ("Attack The Block," "Clash Of The Titans") and Timothy Spall (for most folks, a Hey-It's-That-Guy from numerous movies) and written and directed by Rowan Athale making his feature debut, the set-up doesn't get much simpler (and sort of absurd) than this. But then you quickly realize that this is indeed his first time at the rodeo, his film debut so out of breathe and knees buckling before completing the first lap that we have to do everything in our power to stay with it till the finish line. If this analogy doesn’t give it away, director Athale has created a product grossly over-styled, a derivative amalgamation of heist genre classics, all the while bearing an excessively smug grin.

Not to be confused with the Oscar-nominated documentary of the same name a few years ago, Wasteland is a British heist film that’s set to premiere at Tiff tomorrow. Both Luke Treadaway and Matthew Lewis are on display in much grittier roles than their previous Attack the Block and Harry Potter films, respectively.
Directed by Rowan Athale, the film’s structure shows our lead being caught by the cops, only to have it flashback to the heist that they just attempted. It looks like a tense, fun thriller and as we saw with Treadaway’s creature feature, crime is just better with UK accents, isn’t it? Check out the trailer below via Collider for the film being compared to Ocean’s Eleven and The Usual Suspects, which also stars Iwan Rheon, Gerard Kearns, Timothy Spall, Vanessa Kirbya and Neil Maskell.

The only thing better than a heist movie is a heist movie told in a thick British accent. By that admittedly shallow yardstick, the Tiff 2012 selection Wasteland delivers. The story is framed by an interrogation between Harvey Miller (Luke Treadaway) and Detective Inspector West (Timothy Spall). Harvey fully confesses to his part in a foiled robbery and attempted murder of local busnessman Steven Roper, but there is more to his tale than pure criminality: "As the story unfolds, we discover that a malevolent and unjust act perpetrated by Roper put Harvey in prison and now he has a score to settle." I cannot claim to understand too much of the dialogue, but the first trailer signals that writer/director Rowan Athale has assembled a slick thriller. Iwan Rheon, Gerard Kearns, Matthew Lewis, Vanessa Kirby, and Neil Maskell co-star. Watch the trailer after the jump. Official synopsis: Battered, bruised and under arrest,...

British crime-thriller is one of the final films to be added to the Tiff line-up this week, and with the addition comes four new images from the film, giving us a look at its leading stars, with Luke Treadaway (Attack the Block) particularly battered and bruised in one.
Joining Treadaway will be the brilliant Iwan Rheon (who you’ll no doubt love from Misfits), Matthew Lewis (Harry Potter), Gerard Kearns (Shameless), Timothy Spall (Harry Potter), and Vanessa Kirby (The Hour).
“Battered, bruised and under arrest, Harvey Miller sits in a police interview room facing interrogation. Clutching a stack of eyewitness statements, Detective Inspector West has no doubt as to Harvey’s part in a foiled robbery, and his subsequent attempted murder of local businessman Steven Roper. Denying nothing, Harvey agrees to tell his version of events in full.

Anna Faris has just landed the role that made Goldie Hawn a superstar! The house bunny will be called up to duty for New Line's remake of "Private Benjamin!"
In the 1980 film, Hawn played a spoiled woman who joins the army after her husband dies during sex on their wedding night. The film was nominated for three Oscars including Hawn for best actress, Eileen Brennan for best supporting actress, and best original screenplay for Nancy Meyers, Charles Shyer, and Harvey Miller.
The original was rated R and the rating gave the filmmakers enough leeway to create a thoroughly engrossing film. Given the current economic state of Hollywood, you wanna bet that the remake will be PG-13 for wider audience?
But according to The Hollywood Reporter, the remake "will set the story in contemporary times with modern wars as the backdrop. Insiders say the studio doesn.t want to poke fun...

It looks like Goldie Hawn is the key to a new trend in remakes. Not only did we recently learn that Jennifer Lopez is moving in on a remake of the romantic comedy Overboard, but now Risky Biz reports New Line is looking to remake the 1980 comedy Private Benjamin with Anna Faris starring. Amy Talkington (that sounds like a made up name) is in line to write the script which will be a new take on the story of a spoiled woman who joins the Army after her husband dies during sex on their wedding night. Believe it or not, this is a well-respected comedy that was one of the top grossing films of 1980 and even got Hawn an Oscar nom. Even the screenplay (co-written by Nancy Meyers, Charles Shyer and Harvey Miller) was nominated for an Oscar that year, and it sounds like this remake will ...

Anna Faris is set to star in “Private Benjamin” for New Line Cinema and producer Mark Gordon. The comedy is a remake of the 1980 film directed by Howard Zieff and screenwritten by Charles Shyer, Nancy Meyers and Harvey Miller. The original starred Goldie Hawn, Eileen Brennan, Armand Assante and Robert Webber. Amy Talkington is in discussions to write the new take. This joins other remakes including "Police Academy" and "Vacation" from New Line. Faris was last seen in "Observe and Report" with Seth Rogen. The actress voiced characters in the recent "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel" and prior to that "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" for Sony...

New Line is remaking the 1980s Goldie Hawn comedy Private Benjamin as a star vehicle for Anna Faris. The original film centers on a spoiled woman who enlists after her husband dies on their wedding night after she’s led to believe that army life is more glamorous than it really is. As silly as that premise sounds, the film garnered three Oscar nominations for Best Actress (Hawn), Support Actress (Eileen Brennan), and original screenplay (Nancy Meyers, Charles Shyer and Harvey Miller).
Risky Business reports that the remake will be set in contemporary times but will focus on the fish-out-of-water/empowerment elements rather than poking fun at the military. So probably not The Hurt Locker with chuckles.
Faris is set to begin filming on the R-rated comedy What’s Your Number? and will next be seen in the live-action adaptation of Yogi Bear, which is due to hit theaters this December.
