- Got his part in Dillinger (1973) by standing in a production executive's parking space until he was granted a meeting.
- Built like a solid oak, he later turned actor and found himself well-suited for roles in Sylvester Stallone's boxing films, particularly a more affecting role in La taverne de l'enfer (1978), and other rugged fare.
- A star athlete in high school, McRae graduated from Tennessee State with a double major in drama and history. Had a brief career as a defensive tackle in the NFL, playing in 6 games for the Chicago Bears in 1967.
- Has played a police captain four times: 48 Heures (1982), 48 heures de plus (1990), Alarme fatale (1993), and Last Action Hero (1993).
- Survived by his son Marcellus, three grandchildren, Camden, Jansen, and Holden.
- There was a character named Frank McRae in Le vol de l'Intruder (1991) (played by Ving Rhames).
