The younger son of Albert and Annie Lee and a younger brother of the director Jack Lee. His third cousin is the actor John Light.

Grandfather of Esther through Yasmin Wishart.

He is interred at the lower graveyard of Holy Trinity Churchyard in Slad, Gloucestershire, England. His location plot is in the churchyard against the footpath which runs alongside the church.

Father of daughters, Yasmin with Lorna Wishart and Jesse (Jessy) Frances Lee with his wife, Katherine Polge, born on September 30, 1963.

He was awarded the M.B.E. (Member of the Order of the British Empire) in the 1952 King's Honours List for his services to literature.
