There’s an enormous amount to describe, but very little to actually say about Kevin Costner’s bedraggled “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2,” the second of a planned four installments in his sprawling, multistranded Western, that plays, after the muted reception of “Chapter 1” in Cannes, out of competition on the final day of Venice. Doubling down on the first chapter’s intermittent triumphs but also on its grievous structural issues, it is an exercise in contradictions: incident-packed yet oddly sedate; replete with characters new and returning, yet largely lacking in compelling characterization; and, running to over three hours, simply too long a film to be so jarringly abrupt.

Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 2 is the latest installment in writer-director-star Kevin Costner’s planned four-part film series, which opened in the U.S. this past July to many poor reviews, bemused viewer reaction and disappointing box office numbers.

This second three-hour tranche of Wild West-themed soap-operatic drama, premiering at Venice, has basically the same problems as its predecessor: too much setup and not enough payoff; jagged editing that only highlights the lack of harmony between its disparate narrative strands; and cliché-tinged production values that often make it feel corny and old-fashioned, and not in a good way. And that’s allowing for the assumption that it’s aimed at the geriatric market who loved Costner’s pseudo-revisionist Western blockbuster Dances With Wolves back in the day and his return turn to Western-adjacent form with recent TV hit Yellowstone.

The Rookie began airing back in 2018 and recently concluded its 10th episode of Season 6, putting into question whether or not Episode 11 will soon be released.

Episode 10 featured several key plot points. Nolan (Nathan Fillion) and Bailey (Jenna Dewan) decided to start a family, Chen (Jim Lau) and Bradford (Eric Winter) dealt with their complicated relationship, and the team took on a critical mission to stop Monica (Bridget Regan).
