2025's Horror Sleeper Hit That Grossed 10x Its Budget Is Surging on Streaming 2 Months After Leaving Theaters

Audiences can't get enough of Clown in a Cornfieldon one underrated streaming platform.

Per FlixPatrol, director and co-writer Eli Craig's Clown in a Cornfield has found its way to the number two spot on the list of the top streaming programs currently available on AMC+. As of the time of writing, Clown in a Cornfield sits behind the historical science-fantasy hit Nautilus, while maintaining its position well above other major competition like The Walking Dead: Dead City and Monster Island.

Directed by Craig from a screenplay co-written alongside Carter Blanchard, which itself was based on author Adam Cesare's 2020 novel of the same name, Clown in a Cornfield stars Katie Douglas as Quinn Maybrook, a highschooler who moves to the quiet town of Kettle Springs along with her father, Aaron Abrams' Doctor Glenn Maybrook. Shortly after settling down in Kettle Springs, Quinn learns about the fire that claimed the...

Why The CW's Urban Fantasy Comedy Reaper Was Canceled
Image
The first already-canceled show I fell for, even before "Firefly," was the CW's comedy "Reaper." While "Firefly" received a belated movie wrap-up in 2005 with "Serenity," the story of "Reaper" has remained open since its 2009 cancellation. Perhaps the show invited its own grim fate with a name that suggested death.

What is "Reaper," anyway, though? Well, I don't bring up "Firefly" out of nowhere; if you're a fan of Joss Whedon's writing, then "Reaper" might be up your alley too. The show is best described as "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" crossed with Kevin Smith, from "Clerks" to "Dogma." (Smith even directed the "Reaper" pilot.)

Created by Michele Fazekas & Tara Butters, "Reaper" follows 21-year-old slacker Sam Oliver (Bret Harrison). On his birthday, he gets a very unpleasant gift. Before Sam was born, his father John (Andrew Airlie) was "very sick," so Sam's parents made a deal with the Devil (Ray Wise) for a cure.

Shudder’s Surprise $10 Million Horror Hit Finally Gets a Sequel Update From Its Director
Image
Earlier this year, Shudder released its latest horror hit, Clown in a Cornfield. The film, which stars Katie Douglas, Aaron Abrams, and Kevin Durand, earned a Certified Fresh 73% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and 58% on the audience-driven Popcornmeter. However, the film grossed $10 million at the box office against an exceptionally modest $1 million budget, making it a major financial hit despite only earning $10 million.

With a script by Eli Craig and Carter Blanchard, Clown in a Cornfield is based on one of many famous novels by Adam Cesare. Speaking about the future of the franchise at San Diego Comic-Con, writer/director Eli Craig was asked if he was interested in a potential sequel based on another novel from Cesare. He admitted that the ball is in AMC and Shudder’s court, but he confirmed that there is interest on his side:

"Let AMC reach out to me, and let Shudder make...

Eli Craig
Hollywood supervillain David Zaslav pulled the plug on a Tucker & Dale vs. Evil show
Eli Craig
Eli Craig's 2010 horror comedy Tucker & Dale vs. Evil wasn't a huge hit at the box office, but it went on to have a long life as a modern cult classic. A bunch of college students head into the woods for a weekend getaway, run into a pair of friendly hillbillies played by Alan Tudyk and Tyler Labine, assume they're mass murdering psychopaths, and panic so powerfully they end up killing themselves by accident. It was a really fun inversion of a formula that's been popular at least since 1981's Evil Dead, and Craig has tried many times over the years to get a sequel or spinoff made. "I always wanted to do a sequel, but Hollywood is a slayer of great ideas," he recently told SlashFilm.

One follow-up did come close to happening, but "when we do set it up, and we get all the pieces together, it gets killed somehow,...

Tucker & Dale Vs. Evil Director Breaks Down Why A Sequel Hasn't Happened, Despite Multiple Attempts
Image
Tucker & Dale vs. Evilis one of the greatest horror comedies in recent memory, and the film's director has come forward to explain why a sequel hasn't materialized after all these years. Premiering in 2010 and starring Alan Tudyk and Tyler Labine in the title roles, the film follows a duo of friendly hillbillies who head to a run-down cabin in the woods for a short vacation. Unfortunately, they are mistaken for murderers by some visiting college kids, and soon things devolve into hilariously unnecessary bloodshed.

The indie sensation was written and directed by Eli Craig, and it made a splash at festivals before having a negligible run in theaters. While it was never destined to become a box office sensation, Tucker & Dale vs. Evil was an instant cult hit and amassed a sizable audience through streaming. With its unique approach to horror slapstick, and its affable protagonists, Tucker & Dale had...

Director Eli Craig Talks ‘Tucker & Dale vs. Evil’ Sequel Hopes, Scrapped TV Series
Tyler Labine, Alan Tudyk, and Katrina Bowden in Tucker & Dale fightent le mal (2010)
15 years removed from its Sundance debut, fans are still clamoring for the long-gestured sequel to Tucker & Dale vs. Evil.

In a recent interview with /Film, director/co-writer Eli Craig spoke about the the follow-up to the horror-comedy’s many false starts.

“Honestly, Tucker & Dale 2 has died more deaths than the college kids in Tucker & Dale,” Craig quipped. “We’ve had so many versions that have almost got off its feet or, for one reason or another, have gotten killed. It really does set us back that people can’t look at the box office, the actual box office, of the movie.”

Craig went on to reveal that David Zaslav — the notorious Warner Bros. Discovery CEO who scrapped completed productions like Batgirl, Scoob! Holiday Haunt, and Coyote vs. Acme for tax write-offs — killed a Tucker & Dale TV series.

“It’s always been a struggle, and then when we do set it up,...

'Tucker & Dale vs. Evil' Director Says David Zaslav Killed Spin-off TV Series
Image
Tucker & Dale vs. Evildirector Eli Craig has admitted that the kill count is extremely high when it comes to making a follow-up to his 2010 cult horror comedy. There have been several attempts to bring Alan Tudyk and Tyler Labine's backwoods buddies back to the screen, but he says every idea has been killed off "for one reason or another." Among the projects was a spin-off TV series that was canceled ahead of production by Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav.

In an interview with SlashFilm, Craig revealed that Tucker & Dale vs. Evil nearly spawned a TV series that would have turned the movie's titular hillbillies into a pair of affable detectives, "trying to figure out what's happening in a world where they're always getting it wrong and people are dying around them." The project made significant strides towards production, but was canned by Zaslav, who has been involved...

Tucker and Dale vs. Evil director says David Zaslav killed TV show
Kate Ashfield, Nick Frost, and Simon Pegg in Shaun of the Dead (2004)
Tucker and Dale vs. Evil took a bit to find its audience but is now an absolute fan favorite, bringing a freshness to the horror-comedy genre we hadn’t seen since Shaun of the Dead. While it didn’t do much at the box office, its cult following has built in the 15 years since its release. In fact, there’s so much support that there was once a sequel and a TV show in development. So what happened?

Director Eli Craig (who is currently on the circuit with Clown in a Cornfield) said the true showdown for hillbillies Tucker and Dale wasn’t evil but rather David Zaslav – assuming there’s a difference…). As he told SlashFilm, “It’s always been a struggle, and then when we do set it up, and we get all the pieces together, it gets killed somehow. We almost did a TV show with it that was on TNT/TBS,...

‘Tucker & Dale vs. Evil’ Director Says David Zaslav Killed TV Spinoff: “The Slayer Of All Cinema”
Image
After 15 years, the co-writer and director of Tucker & Dale vs. Evil is still keeping hope alive for a followup to the cult comedy horror.

Eli Craig recently reflected on his 2010 directorial debut and teased “there’s always a possibility” for a sequel, despite a previous attempted TV series spinoff being axed by then Discovery CEO David Zaslav.

“Honestly, Tucker and Dale 2 has died more deaths than the college kids in Tucker and Dale,” he told SlashFilm. “We’ve had so many versions that have almost got off its feet or, for one reason or another, have gotten killed. It really does set us back that people can’t look at the box office, the actual box office, of the movie.”

With an 86% Tomatometer rating and 85% Popcornmeter on Rotten Tomatoes, the film only grossed $223,838 in the United States, but surpassed $5 million in international markets.

David Zaslav Killed A TV Sequel To Tucker And Dale Vs. Evil; Here's What It Would Have Been About [Exclusive]
Image
If there's one thing that can be guaranteed, almost as sure as the sun will rise in the morning, it's that Hollywood will make a sequel to a successful horror movie. Heck, sometimes they'll make sequels to movies that weren't successful in the first place just because horror is so damn cheap to produce. (Just look at "Leprechaun" and its many sequels.) Unfortunately, it doesn't always work out that way. If it did, we'd have a sequel to "Tucker and Dale vs. Evil" by now. It turns out, we could have had a sequel, were it not for Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav.

I recently had the chance to speak with director Eli Craig in honor of his excellent new movie "Clown in a Cornfield." During the conversation, we touched on the attempts to get a sequel to his 2011 cult classic "Tucker and Dale" made over the years. While...

'Tucker & Dale vs. Evil' Sequel Gets Disappointing Update From Director Eli Craig
Image
Fans of outlandish horror comedies like Shaun of the Dead surely know of co-writer and director Eli Craig's 2010 gem, Tucker & Dale vs. Evil. The somewhat-meta slasher buddy comedy follows the trials and tribulations of two rough-around-the-edges bumpkin pals (Alan Tudyk and Tyler Labine) when a crew of ignorant college kids mistake them for hick murderers during a vacation in the woods. While the beloved flick hilariously parodies redneck slasher subgenre tropes, Craig's newest horror comedy, 2025's Clown in a Cornfield, infuses sociopolitical issues, including generational and class tensions, into its fairly traditional masked murderer plot.

Based on author Adam Cesare's Bram Stoker Award-winning 2020 novel of the same name, Clown in a Cornfield follows father-daughter duo Quinn Maybrook (Katie Douglas) and Dr. Maybrook (Aaron Abrams) as they move to a tiny Missouri town obsessed with traditional values: Kettle Springs. Hoping for a fresh start, Dr. Maybrook takes a...

Netflix has shared disappointing news for fans of the Voltron franchise. The streaming service's critically acclaimed Voltron: Legendary Defender reboot will be removed from the platform next week.

DreamWorks and Netflix's Voltron: Legendary Defender premiered in 2016 and released 78 episodes over 8 seasons. The final season of the animated series aired on Netflix in December 2018. Earlier this year, it was reported that the Voltron reboot series would be departing from Netflix, with the official Voltron Instagram account responding and saying, "Discussions are ongoing. New Amsterdam: The Iggy Frome Character Explained (& Where You've Seen The Actor)
Image
Dr. Iggy Frome on New Amsterdam is a key medical expert with complex relationships and struggles. Max Goodwin navigates bureaucracy in an old hospital, surrounded by department heads with expertise. Actor Tyler Labine brings warmth to Iggy, known for roles in both TV and film throughout his career.

Dr. Iggy Frome (Tyler Labine) on New Amsterdam is one of the key medical experts on the NBC medical drama, and sharp-eyed fans will recognize the actor from some of his other works. On a show like New Amsterdam, the doctors, nurses, and staff of the hospital are more critical to the success of the show than the conceit of the series or how shocking the story of the week is. It's about how fleshed out the characters are and the relationships between them that determines if a standard medical procedural will rise above the crowded pack of similar shows.

New Amsterdam Sequel Won't Work Without 1 Original Star

Max Goodwin's return is crucial for the success of the New Amsterdam spinoff. The spinoff will focus on Max's daughter Luna taking over as Medical Director at the hospital. Even as a supporting character, Max's presence is vital to shaping Luna's story in the sequel.

New Amsterdam ended a year and a half ago, but NBC is already cooking up a spinoff (which will only be successful if one original cast member returns). The NBC medical drama television show, created by David Schulner, was based on Eric Manheimer's 2012 book Twelve Patients: Life and Death at Bellevue Hospital. It follows the doctors at New Amsterdam Hospital, a fictional hospital inspired by Bellevue Hospital in New York City, New York, with Dr. Max Goodwin, played by Ryan Eggold in the New Amsterdam cast, as the show's main character.
