Stunt coordinator John Koyama plans out each fight scene for The Boys using cardboard, shooting a previsualization of what chaos is going to unfold.
“You use cardboard boxes as your background,” he says. “You use cardboard props. It’s a cardboard world.”
In one instance, a Tim Hortons’ coffee container became a machine gun. Showrunner Eric Kripke was so tickled by this process that it was written into an episode of the superhero show, which satirizes the world of entertainment, with “supes” — short for superheroes — rehearsing a scene alongside Koyama himself.
“It’s very cool because he paid homage to what we do in the stunt department,” Koyama says. The respect is mutual. Four seasons into the bloody Prime Video series, Kripke leans a lot on what Koyama, who goes by Koy, can come up with. In the early days, Kripke says he used to give detailed instructions on how fights should play out.

Few TV deaths have been as shocking as the one suffered by Pedro Pascal on The Last of Us. Anyone who has played the PlayStation video game from which the show is adapted knew that Pascal's character, Joel Miller, was doomed from the start, yet his demise midway through Season 2 still came as a surprise. And as game creator and series cocreator Neil Druckmann revealed during a recent FYC event for Sony Television some higher-ups were desperate to keep it from happening for as long as possible.
As Druckmann recalled, he had a conversation with Casey Bloys, CEO of HBO, who said, "I just got off the call with this agent, and he yelled at me: 'Why didn't you offer those guys millions of dollars to not kill Pedro?'" Bloys, to his credit, said, "A deal's a deal. We have to adapt the material." This was the first time that Craig Mazin,...

Which is more challenging, big explosions or unnoticeable details? How do the different departments work with each other to tell stories on TV? Why is it sometimes lonely in the visual effects department? These were some of the topics discussed by three top television VFX supervisors when they joined Gold Derby’s special “Meet the Experts” roundtable. Our guests are James MacLachlan (Black Mirror), Stephan Fleet (The Boys), and Andy Scrase (The Wheel of Time).

“Deep Dive” is an in-depth podcast and video essay series featuring interviews with the stars and creative team behind an exceptional piece of filmmaking. This article contains spoilers for "The Boys" season 4.
Season 4 of "The Boys" was the bleakest the show has been, a perverse, hyper-violent chapter in the story that shed any pretense of not being about our current socioeconomic and political climate. Sure, there were still silly and funny moments scattered throughout, but for the most part, it was misery and pain for all. Whether it was Butcher going through an identity crisis (literally), The Deep engaging in arguably his darkest story yet via one messed up relationship, or without a doubt the most heartbreaking, cruel, and otherwise kind of meaningless death in the entire series, "The Boys" reached new levels of sadism and pain.
One particularly big storyline involving pain and betrayal was that of Ryan, Homelander's son with Butcher's late wife, Becca. Given Ryan is the only chance the characters have to defeating Homelander, his storyline is pretty crucial to the show's endgame.

There are violent shows, there are shows that become famous for their violence, and then, in a separate league somewhere between "Mortal Kombat" fatality animations and full-blown splatter cinema, there is Prime Video's "The Boys." Eric Kripke's adaptation of Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson's comic series has become infamous for placing absolutely no restraints on the destructive potential of superpowers, pushing Superman-like strength to brutal results with a level of wicked ingenuity and imagination that approaches cosmic horror -- and in some cases fully evokes it.
Season 4, which began on June 13, 2024 and wrapped up on July 18, may have just been the most violent season yet; there's an expectation at this point that the show will keep finding ways to one-up its own gory setpieces. Walter White's descent into villainy on Breaking Bad is highlighted by his high body count, with almost 300 people killed directly or indirectly. Despite not necessarily being a maniacal murderer, Walt's indifference towards the deaths he caused, and his eventual ruthlessness, are chilling. The number of people Walt kills rises significantly at key points throughout the series, showcasing his transformation into a true villain.
Looking at how many people Walter White killed on Breaking Bad highlights his chilling journey from a mild-mannered chemistry teacher to a drug kingpin. Throughout the five seasons of Breaking Bad, Walt caused the death of almost 300 people, directly or indirectly. Since Walt didn't necessarily seem to fall under the label of a maniacal murderer and wasn't especially violent even when he first turned to crime, the number of deaths he's responsible for is shocking and shows how ruthless he truly is, even if he isn't physically...

With the release of El Camino, Jesse Pinkman's (Aaron Paul) story has finally reached its end. Jesse Pinkman had a beautiful character arc that took him from an amoral, self-involved criminal to a conscientious man hoping to make a better life for himself. As Jesse went on this journey through Breaking Bad and El Camino, he had many friends who helped him along the way. At least some of these friends helped him, others proved to not really be as ride or die as Jesse originally thought.
Jesse Pinkman's friends range from violent drug dealers to kindhearted love interests, so his life is certainly never dull. Each one helps to shape him into the rich and complex character that he is by the end of the series, but some had better influences on him than others. “The Boys” is undeniably captivating — the Prime Video adaptation of Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson’s satirical superhero comic can be filthy, violent, irreverent and hilarious all at once. But the ongoing conflict between the show’s titular vigilantes and the “Supes” backed by malevolent conglomerate Vought International also keeps viewers transfixed with a layered narrative grounded in a relatable reality. It’s enough to make you forget that these flawed characters are wearing capes — even in the midst of all the kickass superhero action.

The hard hitting show stars John Koyama and Yuji Okumoto (also the writer-producer) alongside stunt superstars Al Goto, Sam Looc, and Don Tai. If you haven't recognized any of those names, check out those IMDb listings, because you've definitely seen their movies. Koyama and Okumoto play brothers in a Japanese American Yakuza crime syndicate family. Where Koyama quit the ninja lifestyle to spend time with his wife and daughter, however, Okumoto decided to carry on with the family business - and "convinces" Koyama to join him.
