Jake Adelstein’s 2009 book served as the inspiration for season 1 of Max’s gritty crime drama, following the exploits of a young reporter from America (Ansel Elgort) covering the police beat in Japan’s largest metropolis. The goings-on in that first season came to a dramatic end in a final episode that left the fates of many characters very much up in the air, leaving viewers wondering if they’d ever get resolution to the show’s various cliffhangers.
