Raymond Berwick Kaler

In addition to his West End and television career, he has starred as a pantomime dame in York for 34 years, writing and co-directing 32 of those shows.

"Me babbies, me bairns!" - Kaler's catchphrase on appearance at the panto.

He is retiring from panto after the 2018 Christmas show, titled "The Grand Old Dame of York".

He made his York panto debut playing an ugly step-sister in "Cinderella".

He once shared a stage with 21-year-old Gary Oldman, who played the cat in "Dick Whittington".

I put the wig on, put a pair of boots and a frock on, and suddenly people around me started laughing. I thought, oh well, I'll give it a go, never dreaming all these years later I'd still be doing it...It's the face. If the face suits the wig, you should be able to get away with it.
