Revisiting Madhur Bhandarkar’s Aan: Men At Work As It Clocks 21 Years. Shatrughan Sinha Speaks
Image
Subhash K Jha takes a look back at Madhur Bhandarkar’s Aan: Men At Work and we hear from Shatrughan Sinha about the joy of making the film.

Actually, there are many men at work–both on and off screen—in Aan: Men At Work. While the cop-heroes sweat it out in their humid halos, the men behind the scenes also make their presence felt in rapidfire motions in this emotionless pictureshow . No sobbing Matajis(thank God!) but loads of slithering and sliding Mata Haris.

There’s of course director Madhur Bhandarkar, in his first foray into frenzied action. Big guns with bigger nozzles attached to them—of both the human and the mechanical mind—strut around with such exaggerated machismo , it becomes hard to tell the bad and good guys apart. Bhandarkar treats his heroes and villains (all festooned to the plot with formulistic splendour) like characters in an extended videogame for juvenile grownups.

Actor Dilip Joshi has now become a household name, thanks to his memorable portrayal of Jethalal in the cult TV show, Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah. However, before this, he also starred in some critically acclaimed and commercially successful films opposite some Bollywood A-listers. One of them was the 2000 movie Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani, which starred Shah Rukh Khan in the lead role.

Did you know that Dilip Joshi played a sidekick don for Johnny Lever’s character in the same. In a hilarious sequence of Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani, he shared the screen space with Shah Rukh Khan, Juhi Chawla, and Johnny. In a Tapori streetsmart get-up, the actor looked completely unrecognizable.

However, the actor’s comic timing was inevitably on point. His character who was a sidekick of Johnny Lever’s,...

Antim: The Final Truth

Starring Salman Khan, Aayush Sharma Introducing Mahima Makwana

Directed by Mahesh Manjrekar

By the time Varun Dhawan –yesssss, he is in it too,so rejoice all you fans of the pinup province—shows up for a vigorous dance number, we don’t know who’s coming or going. Or staying. If you consider your own dilemma as a viewer desirous of being freed from this frenetic dizzying dance of debt and death.

Antim means well—it has to, since it is directed by Mahesh Manjrekar who once made Vaastav and City Of Gold, powerful parables on exploitation and violence powered by a genuine social concern. Antim is what Manmohan Desai used to call a proposal film: sign the hero first… during those days the music director also mattered… and then weave a story around him.

Antim: The Final Truth is so much a Salman Khan vehicle...

Image
Mumbai, March 5 (Ians) "Raag", a film close to the heart of late Bollywood choreographer Saroj Khan, is all set to hit theatres on March 26.

"During the pandemic, we lost Saroj ji. She was the backbone of our project. Right from helping us in finalising the story to choreographing to suggesting an item number for the film to casting one of her favourite students -- Heena Panchal -- for the same, Saroj ji helped us a lot. Despite all our earnest efforts the film could not be released while she was around. We are now releasing it on 26th March 2021, and it is our tribute to the noble soul," producer Piyush Mundhada said.

"It is also the first work of the late choreographer to release in theatres posthumously. Had she been there, she would have been very proud of the same," he added.

Renowned choreographer Saroj Khan passed away in July last year.

Dev Anand obituary
Popular Bollywood matinee idol, producer and film-maker

The Indian actor, producer and film-maker Dev Anand, who has died aged 88, was the first and longest serving matinee idol of Bollywood cinema. The pinnacle of his career came with Guide (1965), a film based on Rk Narayan's novel, in which Dev played the male lead opposite the classical Indian dancer turned actor Waheeda Rehman. Dev's talented younger brother Vijay directed it. During the golden age of Indian cinema, in the 1950s and 1960s, Dev, along with Raj Kapoor and Dilip Kumar, formed the trio of stars who dominated the silver screen. Dev's urbanity and quirky mannerisms made him especially popular among the young and women.

He was born in undivided India at Gurdaspur, in the Punjab region. His father, Pishorimal Anand, was a leading lawyer. After graduating from the prestigious Government College, in Lahore, Dev tried and failed to enter the Royal Indian Navy.

Adoor Gopalakrishnan
Book Review: A door to Adoor (2006)
Adoor Gopalakrishnan
Adoor Gopalakrishnan is an exceptional film-maker. Not only does his oeuvre hold the colours of the rainbow, but more importantly when the social world tries to teach us to run and ruin – ourselves and the life round us, he is a graceful exception to this ‘accepted’ norm. Hence, a book on Adoor – his films and the creative mind behind this palette was due for many years. Starting a career in 1972 (feature film consideration) in the last 40 years Adoor made 11 feature films. There are probably few books and many essays on him in Malayali language – the official language of Kerala, where Adoor lives and centres his cinema. There is however an extreme dearth of material on Adoor in English – which also goes on to show the state of regional cinema and its acceptance and expanse. Gautam Bhaskaran’s Adoor Gopalakrishnan: A Life in Cinema which came out this year and...

Bali disapproves Naina’s bhaiyya reference
April 22, 2010:In Beyond Dreams’ prime time show, Jamunia, Bali is really tensed nowadays as Naina (Bhakti) refers to him as bhaiyya. Naina, who has been recently introduced in Jamunia plays the role of Kuber’s (Karan Singh) younger sister and is Bali’s (Dakssh Ajit Singh) cousin. And coming to Bali, he plays Gajraj’s (Mohan Joshi) elder son. That’s how the family connection is and hence Naina refers to Bali as bhaiyya on screen, much to Bali’s dislike.

Bhakti is a pretty lady. So, obviously, nobody on the sets likes to be referred as brother by her. Even post the shoot,.
