FBI Star's Underrated Survival Horror Movie Will Soon Be Streaming
Image
FBI star Missy Peregrym's overlooked horror movie Out Come the Wolves has found a streaming home. The survival film will debut on Hulu on Friday, June 20.

Out Come the Wolves is a reunion for Peregrym and director Adam MacDonald. The duo collaborated on the project after previously working together on his 2014 movie Backcountry -- which pitted Peregrym against a vicious black bear. And according to MacDonald, the two films have much more in common.

Peregrym is once again battling the forces of nature in Out Come the Wolves, when a hunting getaway into the forest takes a terrifying turn. Her character Sophie, Sophie's boyfriend Nolan (played by Damon Runyan) and her friend Kyle (Joris Jarsky) must all fight for their lives when they are methodically hunted by a pack of wolves.

MacDonald directed Out Come the Wolves based on a script by Enuka Okuma and Tyler Russell. The director...

Saw V (2008) – What Happened to This Horror Movie?
Image
Like the movies in this series, we will continue to release fairly regularly and find out what happened to the Saw franchise. Saw V was already planned well before Saw IV even came out as the new creators had a whole storyline that needed multiple movies to pull off. When would the revenue stop coming in for this series? How would they bring back Tobin Bell’s Jigsaw yet again after he had now been dead for a full movie and the timeline had caught up to the present? It’s time to play another game as we find out what happened to Saw V.

After the massive 140-million-dollar success of Saw IV, Saw V would be a similar experience. Why change things around too much if the formula was working so well. It had a similar budget to its predecessor, going from 10 million to 10.8 million and brought back many...

Denzel Washington’s 'The Little Things' Leaving Netflix & Headed to Max
Image
Denzel Washington is by far one of the greatest actors of our generation, but even the best have some duds. The Little Things, released in theaters and on streaming in 2021 during the Covid-19 pandemic, is a star-studded thriller that failed to enrapture audiences in its serial killer mystery. Featuring some head-scratching performances and a far too self-serious story, despite being so audacious, not even Washington could save The Little Things from becoming a forgotten part of the actor's recent filmography. Well, audiences can find that out for themselves before it leaves Netflix by the end of November.

The Little Things is set to leave Netflix by December 1, before it arrives back at its original streaming home, Max. The neo-noir period thriller certainly has its fans, so it is good to know that the Washington-led film will still have a place in the vast streaming world. The Little Things also...

Out Come the Wolves Review | All Bite & No Brains in Hunting Thriller
Image
Out Come the Wolves pits man versus nature in a bloody and visceral fight for survival that doesn't quite pass the logic test. The simple premise has a journalist and his fianc joining her best friend for a weekend wilderness hunting trip that goes horribly awry. Sharp camerawork, quick edits, and a literally growling soundtrack create tension when the script comes up lacking. The characters, initially thought out with believable exposition, fall into the mindless trap of genre idiocy that turns ostensibly smart people into lunch meat. An attempt at more cerebral underpinnings falls flat when common sense is chucked out the window.

Out Come the Wolves 2/5 RThrillerHorrorAction

Three friends decide to spend the weekend hunting, but when they venture out of their cabin and into the woods, they soon become the hunted.

Review: Adam MacDonald Once Again Calls Upon the Horrors of Nature in Out Come The Wolves
Image
Adam MacDonald’s Out Come the Wolves bears a striking resemblance to his vicious wilderness horror debut Backcountry. That’s not a negative — MacDonald tore our nerves to shreds with his man-eating black bear nightmare. Out Come the Wolves opts for what’s in the title, gnashing at our throats like similar thrillers The Pack or The Grey. It’s not as composed as Backcountry and reads as redundantly familiar in parts, but animalistic brutality still prevails. MacDonald’s turning his fearful respect of the animal kingdom into a filmmaking signature, even if Out Come the Wolves is a step backward.

Missy Peregrym reunites with MacDonald to star as Sophie, a former outdoorswoman gone vegan who just got engaged to preppy journalist Nolan (Damon Runyan). Her soon-to-be hubby’s latest assignment explores humankind’s relationship with food, specifically the killing of beasts for meat. Nolan’s committed to hunting his...

Out Come The Wolves Review: A Taut Survival Horror Flick That Takes A Bite Out Of Toxic Masculinity
Image
Like the best hunters, Out Come the Wolves (2024) excels because of its restraint. Directed and co-written by Adam MacDonald (Slasher), the survival-horror film is a tight 87 minutes, but economy of runtime isnt its only strength. The cast features just three characters: Missy Peregrym (FBI), who collaborated with MacDonald on Backcountry, plays Sophie, a woman who comes from a family of hunters, while Damon Runyan (Star Trek: Discovery) plays Nolan, Sophies fianc whos never fired a weapon. Kyle (Reachers Joris Jarsky), a skilled hunter who grew up with Sophie, rounds out the trio and the love triangle.

Backcountry and Pyewacket director Adam MacDonald is back this year with Out Come the Wolves, a survival horror movie set for theatrical and VOD release on August 30. MacDonald reteams with Backcountry star Missy Peregrym on the thriller, this time pitting the actor against a metaphorical and physical pack of wolves.

While there, tensions between the two men rise prior to their setting off on a deer hunt that descends into the darkest side of nature, leaving a truly terrifying trail of horror. ‘Out Come The Wolves’ Review: A Gnarly Survival Thriller On The Consequences Of Befriending Men
Image
Survival thrillers are awesome. Be it the dark forests or the open seas, humans are the most vulnerable creatures out there, and it’s always thrilling to see them come to terms with the fact that they’re not exactly at the top of the food chain. The on-screen portrayal of this eternal battle between man and the wild has changed over the years. The birds that we see on the screen in The Birds were achieved via real birds, mechanical birds, and a ton of visual effects and special effects. Jaws used a mixture of stock footage and a shifty mechanical shark to inspire terror. Bart the Bear achieved iconic status with his appearance in The Edge. And with advancements in visual effects and CGI, we got realistic-looking predators in films like Snakes on a Plane, The Grey, The Revenant, The Shallows, Crawl, and Beast (the one with Idris Elba...

Thandiwe Newton and Jefferson White in God's Country (2022)
‘God’s Country’ Film Review: Thandiwe Newton Shines Even as the Landscape Gets Shaky
Thandiwe Newton and Jefferson White in God's Country (2022)
“God’s Country” was reviewed by TheWrap out of the 2022 Sundance Film Festival.

“God’s Country” is the latest offering in a trend of reimagining both the Western and the thriller, as this film is also tagged, with Black leads. Thandiwe Newton, a 2018 Emmy winner for “Westworld,” stars as Sandra Guidry in an adaptation of James Lee Burke’s 1992 short story “Winter Light” about a college professor who gets into a battle of wills with two hunters who trespass on her property in Montana.

For filmmaker Julian Higgins, his feature-length debut is the second time around for the core story. Back in 2015, Higgins directed a successful short of the same name with, in keeping with the story, an older white male protagonist as lead. Obviously, a Black female star brings a different nuance to the narrative, but the real question may be whether Higgins and his story collaborator Shaye Ogbonna, a Black male writer,...

Thandiwe Newton in Trailer for Neo-Western Thriller 'God's Country'
Thandiwe Newton and Jefferson White in God's Country (2022)
"Out here things are a little different... Most folks handle this sort of thing amongst themselves." IFC Films has unveiled the first official trailer for God's Country, an indie Neo-Western thriller from filmmaker Julian Higgins. This first premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and it earned some rave reviews, despite mostly flying under the radar during the festival. The title is a reference to the land which it takes place on - Thandiwe Newton plays Sandra Guidry, a Black professor living and working in a rural town in the snowy lands of the American West. When this grieving college professor confronts two hunters that she catches trespassing on her property, she's drawn into an escalating battle of wills with catastrophic consequences for all. It's a remarkably tense thriller with some exceptional cinematography, but most of all a towering, magnificent performance from Newton. The indie cast features Jeremy Bobb,...

Image
Thandiwe Newton ventures to the frosted depths of the forest in IFC Films’ “God’s Country,” inspired by James Lee Burke’s short story “Winter Light.” In the film, Newton portrays Sandra Guidry, a college professor living in a rural town while grieving the recent loss of her mother. On the day of the funeral, Sandra finds a mysterious truck parked in her driveway that belongs to hunters looking to hunt on her property. Sandra is soon drawn into a battle of escalating wills in the Western-set thriller.

“God’s Country” is directed Julian Higgins, who co-wrote the screenplay with Shay Ogbonna. Jeremy Bobb, Joris Jarsky, Jefferson White, Kai Lennox, and Tanaya Beatty also star. Exclusive: IFC Films has acquired North American rights to Julian Higgins’ feature directorial debut God’s Country, starring BAFTA and Emmy winner Thandiwe Newton, on the heels of its debut at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival. It will release the film won in a bidding war in theaters this fall.

The acquisition is IFC Films’ third out of this year’s virtual festival, following its pick-up of the horror-thrillers Resurrection (starring Rebecca Hall and Tim Roth) and Watcher (starring Maika Munroe), and marks the seventh for its parent company AMC Networks.

Higgins and Shaye Ogbonna scripted God’s Country, which is based on the short story “Winter’s Light” by James Lee Burke. In the character-driven thriller set in the snowy wilderness of the American West, Newton plays Sandra Guidry, a Black professor living and working in a rural college town who discovers a mysterious red truck parked in her driveway,...

Thandiwe Newton at an event for RocknRolla (2008)
Sundance Review: Thandiwe Newton Brings a Fire to the Slow-Burn Neo-Western God’s Country
Thandiwe Newton at an event for RocknRolla (2008)
A few thrillers have premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival that feature vulnerable and underestimated women, but none of them carry the quiet, enigmatic power of Thandiwe Newton in God’s Country, a frigid neo-western that moves glacially but thoughtfully through topics of class, race, and gender. As Sandra, a college professor living alone with her dog in the vast Montana wilderness, Newton exudes a gravitational force, carrying a stern and inscrutable countenance that her character will eventually use to her advantage in an ongoing dispute with two white men. In a pocket of the country that feels lawless and bitterly divided, Sandra is unafraid to begin a vindictive war of escalation, even if it means stripping away everything important in her life.

Directed by Julian Higgins, and based on James Lee Burke’s short story, “Winter Light,” God’s Country introduces Sandra cloaked in the aftermath of death. In the final weeks before Christmas,...

‘God’s Country’ Review: Thandiwe Newton Delivers Politically Charged Suspense on a Human Scale
Image
The premise of “God’s Country” paints the proverbial “two Americas” with the broadest possible brushstrokes, pitting a Black, female humanities professor against two white guys in a red pickup truck. Nobody mentions who they voted for, but the preconceived notions write themselves. Yet the film digs deeper with each passing scene, subverting our first impressions of each character before letting them prove they are exactly who we thought they were. Julian Higgins’ excellent film constantly dangles redemption in front of our faces, begging us to imagine a better world, but ultimately delivers a stark reminder of how bitterly divided the country is.

We first meet Sandra, played by Thandiwe Newton, as she watches her mother’s cremation. “God’s Country” follows Sandra for the first week of her life without her mother, conveniently labeling each of the seven days. She teaches public speaking at a rural college we never learn the name of,...

‘God’s Country’ Review: Thandiwe Newton Anchors a Thriller of Escalating Disputes in Big Sky Country
Image
Race, class and cultural divides are probed with intriguing understatement in “God’s Country.” Julian Higgins’ first feature can be taken as a drama with thriller elements or a low-key thriller with atypical dramatic nuance, working either way as a quietly effective balance between genre, social issue and character study elements. Based on a James Lee Burke story, it stars Thandiwe Newton as a college professor whose fish-out-of-water status in rural Montana is exacerbated when she runs afoul of trespassing working-class hunters. Too modest in scope and impact to be a major breakout title, this Sundance premiere should nonetheless attract streaming outlets and other home-format providers.

The screenplay by Higgins and Shaye Ogbonna is a “western” in that it’s on the laconic side verbally, at least most of the time. Thus it’s a while before we realize that the loved one Sandra Guidry (Newton) buries at the start is her long-ailing mother,...

Steven Spielberg Almost Directed The Little Things, Here's Why He Didn't
Image
Crime thriller The Little Things brings together three Academy Award winners in Denzel Washington, Rami Malek and Jared Leto and could at one time could have been directed by another one, Steven Spielberg. The Little Things writer John Lee Hancock wrote the initial draft for the movie back in 1993, with the intention for Hollywood icon Steven Spielberg to helm the project.

"Steven really liked A Perfect World, my script for it. And so, before we ever went into production on A Perfect World, he came to me and said, 'Let's do a blind picture deal. ... Let's just do it at Warner Brothers. Something for you to write and meet to direct.' ... So, we started pitching ideas back and forth. I came up on this one, I can't remember exactly when, and fell in love with it. The twists and turns. I wrote a long outline and then talked to...

‘The Little Things’ Review
Image
Stars: Denzel Washington, Rami Malek, Jared Leto, Chris Bauer, Michael Hyatt, Terry Kinney, Natalie Morales, Isabel Arraiza, Joris Jarsky, Glenn Morshower | Written and Directed by John Lee Hancock

First thing you need to know about me is that I never miss a Denzel movie… The man is an absolute legend and rarely makes a bad film; though if it does happen to be bad you can guarantee he is the best thing in it! Second thing is that Jared Leto, as far as I am concerned, is tragically underrated. I mean yes, okay, he has won an Oscar and so you may say that he’s rated enough but Leto is easily one the best character actors around right now. Then you have Rami Malek who has been on the scene for a good long while jobbing away and picking his roles carefully, but in the last couple years he...

Jared Leto, on why his film with John Lee Hancock was surprising
Image
Hollywood star Jared Leto says his new film, John Lee Hancock's The Little Things, comes with questions about guilt, innocence, assumptions and identity.

"I have wanted to work with John Lee for quite some time, he's such an incredible writer and director. When I first read the script, I really was taken in by the characters and he did a great job of keeping you on the edge of your seat," Leto said while talking about collaborating with the director.

"The story poses questions not just about guilt or innocence, but assumptions and identity. It was surprising and I think people are going to be shocked by the ending," he added.

In the psychological thriller, Denzil Washington is seen as Kern County Deputy Sheriff Joe "Deke" Deacon, who gets involved in tracking a serial killer who is terrorising the city of Los Angeles. Rami Malek as L.A. Sheriff Dept.

‘The Little Things’ trailer: Denzel Washington and Rami Malek’s powerful dialogues
Image
'The Little Things' trailer has arrived and it looks promising.

Warner Bros has released the official trailer for the upcoming thriller film 'The Little Things' featuring a trio of Oscar winners: Denzel Washington, Rami Malek, and Jared Leto taking center stage.

The film seems to take us on the edge of our seats with several twists and turns, as we wait to see the mystery unfold.

The trailer for the psychological thriller begins with Denzel Washington as Kern County Deputy Sheriff Joe “Deke” Deacon, sitting next to the dead body of a young woman in the morgue. A Los Angeles detective (Rami Malek) asks him to assist him in a serial killer investigation. Together they set out in pursuit of a murderer (possibly Jared Leto) on the loose in the city who's been killing women over and over again.

Written and directed by John Lee Hancock, the film also stars Natalie Morales,...

The Little Things Trailer Unites Oscar Winners Denzel Washington, Rami Malek & Jared Leto
Image
The first trailer and images from upcoming thriller The Little Things have now been released, giving us a glimpse at the trio of Oscar winners at the centre of the story; Denzel Washington, Rami Malek, and Jared Leto. The eerie footage and handful of images show Washington looking every bit the grizzled, world-weary sheriff with a sixth sense and penchant for following his gut, while Leto sports a Charles Manson-esque beard and long hair look, his greasy appearance and sunken eyes doing their best to disguise his leading man visage.

The Little Things follows Oscar winning actor and Hollywood icon Denzel Washington as Deke Craven, a burned-out deputy sheriff with an eye for detail who teams up with Baxter, a crack Los Angeles detective, played by Rami Malek, to reel in a wily serial killer. Deke's nose for the "little things" proves eerily accurate, but his willingness to circumvent...

Oscar Winners Denzel Washington, Rami Malek and Jared Leto Face Off in ‘The Little Things’ Trailer
Image
Denzel Washington and Rami Malek are playing a dangerous game with Jared Leto in the first trailer for “The Little Things.”

The trio of Oscar winners — Malek won best actor for his portrayal of Freddie Mercury in “Bohemian Rhapsody,” Leto took home the supporting actor trophy for “Dallas Buyer’s Club” and Washington is a two-time winner, including best actor for “Training Day” and supporting actor in “Glory”– face off in the psychological thriller from writer-director John Lee Hancock.

In the film, Washington plays Kern County Deputy Sheriff Joe “Deke” Deacon, who gets involved in tracking a serial killer who is terrorizing the city of Los Angeles. Malek’s L.A. Sheriff Dept. Sergeant Jim Baxter is leading the investigation.

“You’re not exactly a department favorite,” Malek drawls at the beginning of the clip, speaking to Washington. “Things have probably changed a lot since you left.”

“Still got to catch ’em right?...

Denzel Washington, Jared Leto, and Rami Malek in Une affaire de détails (2021)
"How's the trunk space?" Warner Bros has released an official trailer for The Little Things, a serial killer investigative thriller from filmmaker John Lee Hancock - director of The Blind Side, Saving Mr. Banks, The Founder, The Highwaymen. This is currently set for release in January from Warner Bros - one of the first releases to try the dual theatrical + HBO Max debut. The Little Things centers around Deke, a burnt-out Kern County, CA deputy sheriff who teams with Baxter, a crack L.A. Sheriffs Department detective, to nab a serial killer who is terrorizing the city. Deke's nose for the "little things" often proves eerily accurate, but his willingness to circumvent the rules embroils Baxter in a soul-shattering dilemma. In addition, Deke must wrestle with a dark secret from his past. This one stars Denzel Washington, Rami Malek, and Jared Leto. Along with Natalie Morales, Terry Kinney, Chris Bauer,...

Denzel Washington and Rami Malek Are Out to Catch Jared Leto in ‘The Little Things’ Trailer (Video)
Denzel Washington, Jared Leto, and Rami Malek in Une affaire de détails (2021)
In Warner Bros. movie “The Little Things,” Jared Leto is a friggin’ creep, so he probably was the one who killed a whole bunch of girls in Los Angeles. At least, that’s the theory of Denzel Washington’s cop. So long as they collar a criminal, his ad-hoc partner (Rami Malek) seems pretty much on board with all of that — and with Washington’s character’s own unsettling methods.

Denzel Washington, Rami Malek (“Bohemian Rhapsody”) and Jared Leto (“Dallas Buyers Club”) star in the psychological thriller “The Little Things.” John Lee Hancock directed the film from his own original screenplay.

In “The Little Things,” Kern County Deputy Sheriff Joe “Deke” Deacon (Washington) is sent to Los Angeles for what should have been a quick evidence-gathering assignment. Instead, he becomes embroiled in the search for a killer who is terrorizing the city. Leading the hunt, L.A. Sheriff Department Sergeant...

‘The Little Things’ Trailer: Denzel Washington, Jared Leto, Rami Malek Team for Murder Thriller
Image
Warner Bros. shocked the industry earlier this month when it announced it would be adopting a hybrid release model for its entire 2021 film slate in which films will open in theaters on the same day they become available to stream on HBO Max for 31 days. “Wonder Woman 1984” is testing out the strategy with its Christmas release, and first up out of the gate in theaters and on HBO Max for Warner Bros. in 2021 is “The Little Things,” a psychological crime thriller from “The Blind Side” and “Saving Mr. Banks” director John Lee Hancock.

Fortunately for Warner Bros., “The Little Things” should have no problem being a huge draw on streaming considering it brings together three Oscar winners: Denzel Washington, Rami Malek, and Jared Leto. The film, written by Hancock, stars Washington and Malek as a pair of Los Angeles cops who clash while investigating a grisly murder. Leto’s character is the prime suspect.

Warner Bros. Is Considering 3 More Tentpole Movies for HBO Max Streaming Debut
Image
With Disney releasing several high-profile movies straight to streaming, skipping theaters entirely, it looks like Warner Bros. is considering following suit. Amid the ongoing global situation and theater closures, Warner Bros. is reportedly discussing moving multiple movies to a HBO Max release including Judas and the Black Messiah starring Daniel Kaluuya & Lakeith Stanfield, Denzel Washington and Rami Malek's The Little Things, and the live action Tom and Jerry.

Much like the change of release to Warner Bros' comic book sequel Wonder Woman 1984, which will now be released theatrically on December 25, 2020, and digitally on HBO Max simultaneously, Tom & Jerry, The Little Things, and Judas and the Black Messiah would also be released both to streaming and in select theaters on the same date, reports claim.

The studio also considered doing the same with the upcoming Mortal Kombat reboot, but ultimately decided that the highly anticipated video game adaptation...

Freddie Highmore in Good Doctor (2017)
‘The Good Doctor’: Regina King Directed a Challenging Episode That Questions the Nature of Heroism
Freddie Highmore in Good Doctor (2017)
[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers about “The Good Doctor” episode “Heartfelt.”]

While “The Good Doctor” has made a point to tell stories about representation, identity, and marginalized people, it’s still a medical show that poses questions about life, death, and how we as people navigate those concepts. On Monday’s episode, “Heartfelt,” a situation arises in which a criminal tries to seek redemption, with mixed results in how his actions are received.

In the episode, a young boy named Eric (Nicholas Johnny) is in dire need of a liver, but it needs to be compatible with Type O blood, and that’s been hard to come by. Dr. Claire Browne (Antonia Thomas) finds one that’s readily available, but it’s not one that’s on the donor registry list because there’s a catch: The organ belongs to seven-time convicted killer Sergey Tirayan (Joris Jarsky), who is still in prison.
