My favorite TV show when I was 13 years old was titled "Kolchak: The Night Stalker," starring actor Darren McGavin as the title character, a somewhat annoying, sneaker-wearing Chicago newspaper reporter who's (almost) a total f**-up. Character actor Simon Oakland was his memorable co-star portraying his crotchety boss at the paper. Many years later, this relatively unknown & short-lived series would become the clear inspiration for Chris Carter, as he created a much more popular and long-running series starring David Duchovny & Gillian Anderson, and is famously titled "The X-Files." Watch this precursor, and you'll see why McGavin was eventually invited to guest-star on The X-Files, appearing not long before he died. Kinda silly; a bit scary; highly recommended.
