I learned about Paltabor from how Metal Slug's creators were inspired by it. This movie can be a bit deceptive because it has typical mecha anime aesthetics. Paltabor has more in common in Seven or 12 monkeys than it has with Gundam. The robot action only starts at the last 40 minutes, most of the movie is a detective mystery with some neat visuals here&there. The movie is teetering on the edge of being a classic but falls short because the main catalyst behind the plot is unresolved and the movie just ends.
This was an interesting movie for me personally, its an old Cel-Animated Movie which i like, it has grounded characters that aren't exaggerated archetypes like you'd see in most modern Shonen/SOL Anime. Though, Paltabor is not something i'd recommend to casual viewers as it can easily bore people.

From the general consensus among the fans of this show, you'd be led to believe that this is a hidden gem but you'd be badly mistaken. This show is no gargoyles Or BTAS, don't go in expecting cool fight sequences and plot twists because the show crawls at a snail's pace. Its as if the writers couldn't decide whether they wanted a crime drama Or a high-fantasy supernatural show and have ended up delivering neither.
Season 1 drags its feet for way too long, its actually baffling how little spawn has to do in his own show. For most of the show, spawn is out there brooding and that's it, the show mainly focuses on boring criminal conspiracies and then cuts back to Spawn brooding. Season 2 is better but its stil follows the same formula of petty criminal villain of the week. Season 3 is where things start getting interesting with lore and Spawn FINALLY gets to fight a supernatural enemy, it felt like christmas honestly.
The show ends just when the it starts becoming good with supernatural conflicts taking center stage and the criminal stuff being treated like the background filler it should've ALWAYS been. Its such a shame because we'll never have this cel shaded animation style ever again.

Firstly, we have to get this out of the way, the HYPE surrounding this movie is unwarranted. I'm reviewing this movie because it lacks in any real substance and i can finish it quickly, i can describe the whole movie in one sentence without spoiling anything. "Guy gets pushed to the limit and lashes out at Society", you could've figured that out from the teaser trailer, there's no need to even watch the movie.
Sure, there are movies such as Taxi Driver that can be described like that as well but Taxi Driver added nuance&layers to the subjects it tackled. Joker leaves nothing to the imagination and its about as subtle as a sledgehammer to the face. Phoenix does a fantastic job as another unique Joker despite the fact that the hackneyed script gives him very little to work with. Like i said earlier, if you've watched the teaser you've pretty much watched the entire movie.
