Jake knows what he's doing. He has great ideas and makes great food in a successful restaurant. But he has SERIOUS problems articulating to his wife and employees when it's "go time". He just needs to chill the F out. Maybe practice some mediation or something. He really does have the skills, chops, and know-how, along with the creative artistic eye to present both delicious and visually satisfying food. He also seems to understand how to pair foods with different textures and flavors so that they go great together. He has clear goals in mind and seems he'll-bent on reaching them, but he's just a damn jerk to everyone that helped him get there.
I honestly wasn't expecting much, but this movie reminds me of some of the crazy little monster movies thar I watched back in the 80's as a kid. It's a relatively clean movie too, so I think it would be fun for the whole family. Yeah, the humor is pure cheese and it's got puppets, but that's what makes it kinda cool. Instead of relying completely on CGI like most new movies, they use a lot of practical effects. And the music is spot-on, helping with the party vibe. I loved some of the marketing that they did for this movie with the number you could call or text and get a message from Frankie himself. I hope to see more movies like this from writer-director Steven Kostanski. Awesome job, dude! Makes me want to party and get my freak on!
The story is fun; just three kids raising hell one summer around town and the woods. The cinematography is great. It is shot on 16mm stock, so it has a neat 70's kinda vibe. And the music is great. Music reminds me of 80ms fantasy, which is what the dialogue and story alludes to.
But the acting is terrible by almost all actors. Not even Lio Tipton (the only name I recognized on the bill) can save this disaster of a Goonies-wannabe.
However, please still check it out. Worth supporting an indie movie that looks great and has great music and a good story. Hopefully, this director will use this film as a stepping stone, learn from it, and the next film will be better.
