Yes, of course this is targeted to those who know and remember the never before seen phenomenon that was Dingo's high years. A lovely time travel and phenomenal actor's work.
The story is clearly that of the band's figurehead Neumann, who cooperated in the production. All main actors and actresses capture their characters beautifully with many shades of expression. Saku Taittonen is the perfect Neumann, and Jani Karvinen as present-day him so accurate I thought for a while it was a cameo. Editing is done perfectly, real gig reels are cut in to the acted parts very naturally.
Two minuses, however. Firstly, the character of Lasse Norres is terrible, totally sucky. (The real Norres has been critical of the way he was portrayed, but I don't mean that.) Let him be the "villain" of the story, let it all be true, I don't care. But the way the character speaks is in itself a sad joke. Not blaming the actor - the director must have been out of her mind.
Another thing some complain about is the massive "psychological hole" in the story, after Neumann's lowest point and cutting to near present day. I both agree and don't. Although the film is not very long anyway, I would have deleted the frame story of the older Neumaan completely. As I said the actor is perfect, but this part is just not necessary. It is overly sentimental, loose, underestimating the viewer. We are not idiots. Not everything has to be explained in detail. We don't need to know all the elements in life that eventually lifted Neumann from his darkest times. Holes in the story leave room for interpretation. Starting from his childhood, and the long shadow of the father, were reasonable choices. But I would simply have cut it all to Pepe and Nipa's little chat. (It would also have been more effective, since Pepe sadly died during the production. Right when the film cut out, there were special thanks to Neumann and respects to the memory of Pepe. Would it have been beautiful to just cut earlier, to the moment this calm voice of reason tried to encourage his long term friend.)

How brutal and realistic, but also beautiful can a movie get? I knew something about the true story and was prepared for a hard watch, and occasionally it really was. But at the same time so hauntingly beautiful and respectful of every unfortunate person to actually have been there. Music, cinematography, everything. And The Infamous Issue is handled carefully, focusing on the moral dilemma and extremity of the events.
Some have complained about the duration, but it held my full attention and suspense every moment. And even if it was too long, that too would be a good artistic choice. The time is supposed to feel painfully long!
I have only seen some clips from Alive, but based on them alone I dare say SotS did everything better. The choice of a narrator was intersting, not that much a surprise to me than many it seems, but it emphasized what he title says. It is a story of a Society, not only those Alive.
I have watched some clips afterwards, several times actually. I didn't know about all the survivor cameos when watching for the first time, but they too were so thoughtful. It also gives a message: many survivors and families of the lost cooperated in the production, guided the actors into the events and the characters of those that were lost. They were happy with the honesty of the story. And of course it is more authentic done in Spanish, with mostly South American actors.
I have only seen The Orphanage from the director before this one. A huge time span - was The Orphanage even Bayona's first? It too was special: one of the scariest movies ever, not despite but because of showing nothing categorically scary.
I understand this is not for everyone, but I do recommend it also to those unsure about the heavy topic. This is not a horror feast. It is a deep bow to humanity.

Okay, I have to admit: I am not a fan of this genre anyway. We went to see this at an early stage of dating with my now-husband in 2012. One might think this is an ideal movie for freshly love-smitten adults, and it was in a way: after 12 years we still make nasty jokes about the movie.
There is nothing seriously wrong with the production, actors or anything. It's just that no actor or director can save a poor script. Cliche after cliche, pseudo-sentimental stare after another, supposedly witty "humorous" moment after another. Having seen some actually hard-to-watch masterpieces, this is still my most painful film memory yet.
However, for those who like rom-com and easy watching happily ever after drama, why not.
