Évaluation de moo-vee
Tammuz has crafted a solid work here. He focuses heavily on character, and his actors give the performances to match it. True, the vast majority of the humour comes from differences between characters from either side of the atlantic... but there is enough material there to bring the occasional belly laugh. Moments here and there are inspired (the railroad stands out), some are very moving, and all in all this is well worth a look.
The first time I saw this, it shot straight to the top of my all time list. After repeated viewings, and my initial excitement at having seen something so original subsided slightly - it's still in my top ten. Sit down in a darkened room with a copy of this, and feel privileged to watch a rare outing from one of the most talented directors of our generation.
It's such a shame when the promise of such a strong cast is destroyed by tired directing, a weak script and a pace equivalent to an arthritic snail. Christopher Plummer at lest provides some distraction, but therein lies the only saving grace. this is paint-dryingly tedious. Decorate your house instead.
