I've read quite a bit about Hugh Glass, Jim Bridger and other "mountain men," and knowing the story really spoiled this movie for me. There was very little factual about it, and what was an incredible story of survival in the wilderness just turned into a piece of almost pure fiction. I've thought about how to convey the level of fictionalization of the story to the readers of this review but there is so much wrong that it would take a tome to outline it all. About the only things true were that Glass was mauled by a mama bear with two cubs and that he was left for dead.
Yes, the acting and photography were superb, but I'm truly troubled when history is so thoroughly twisted that after watching this they are left with a completely distorted view of events of the past. Please take a few minutes, at least, to search for the full story of the actual events.

I made it a half hour into the first episode and had more than I could handle. The writers and director should have been fired. In the first few minutes, someone was shot through the cheek and out the other cheek, then dies from an injury that would never kill anyone. Another character comes walking straight into gunfire, then continues to blast an armored door over and over, while the opponent's leg and foot are clearly visible under that door. Then on a stakeout we are subjected to a lengthy inane conversation that is more than just boring, it repeats, over and over. The forementioned writers and director had no idea how to develop a character without resorting to endless exposition and redundancy. That first 30 minutes could easily have been trimmed down to 10. I won't be revisiting this carnage.
