My second stop for the MMFF 2025 was "Call Me Mother". I am really fond of good and heartwarming family drama and "Call Me Mother" is certainly one of them. This film has a lot of heart, with a strong emphasis on family. Particularly the love between a mother and a child. It is a tribute to mothers and their sacrifices for their children and the long-term effect a mother's love for their child can have.
"Call Me Mother" was worth it. Very different from Vice's previous films. Her comedy was barely there, and the overall structure is so different and is immensely better than her previous films. The drama aspect is more than what the film carries in the second half, it elevates it. Vice Ganda was a different actor in this film. Her most restrained role. She gives a fantastic performance. More believable and real. Everything was just smooth, just wow!
Nadine Lustre continues to prove why she is the gem of MMFF. She leaps out of the screen. Every line she delivers feels sincere and heartfelt.
Of course, the young Lucas Andalio. The standout star of the film. Lucas really steals the film with his remarkable acting performance, he is without a doubt, the best! The emotion is easily seen through his eyes. I can say now that we have a new child wonder!
In conclusion, "Call Me Mother" is a cinematic triumph. Direk Jun Lana has crafted a film that is not just watched but experienced. Its artistry, emotional depth, and narrative brilliance make it a must-see for any film enthusiast. "Call Me Mother" shines with a brilliance that transcends most.

This film is a beautiful and moving tribute to the sacrifices that mothers make for their children. Watching it was a deeply personal experience for me; it made me realize the times I have been selfish as a child and gave me a new perspective on parental love.
The acting was incredibly effective. You can feel every emotion on screen, making the story feel very piercing the heart. This was my first time watching a Vice Ganda movie on the big screen, and I can honestly say it was worth every minute. It balances the expected entertainment with genuine, raw emotion. Whether you are a fan of the lead or just a fan of family dramas, this is a must-watch that will leave you reflecting on your own relationships.

With the return of our blockbuster queen this year's MMFF, would this revolutionize the world of comedy or just recycle the the forced and cringe jokes just to fulfill the "comedy" to its genre?
Well, on initial take, I thought it would be a remastered version of Wenn Deramas' Bakikang (one of Wenn's masterpiece), I mean the trailer is giving Bekikang especially the hospital scene. Surprisingly, I did not feel watching Bekikang at all, although they might have a similar plot, but the flow of the story is indeed different and somehow fresh. Well, the hospital scene quite brings you to Bekikang's emotional scene, but they made sure that the line remains fresh. The comedic take made the theater alive, while some joke entries felt forced, the engagement is maintained throughout the film. However, there are characters felt useless, especially Pamilya de Guzman, like you can remove everyone except esnyr and you won't notice any changes. It did fill the casting though, so maybe it's ok.
Now, is it your typical Vice Ganda MMFF? Maybe yes, most of the elements is still there, the natural comedic vibe executed by Vice Ganda herself is impressive (I mean, it's the Vice Ganda, hello?). But, the emotional take is on point and revolutionizing, and Vice Ganda's expression is very impressive (Best Actor btw), so you might wanna bring some tissue when you watch it.
I would also like to commend how John Lapus executed her role, could've been nominated for Best Supporting Actor. Same goes to Iyah Mina. The inclusiveness makes it more much awelcoming film to watch.
Overall, the film will make you squeeze your stomach from laugher and then suddenly wet your tissue that is supposedly for you hands with cheese powder from popcorns. The story did not even replicate Bekikang, so it's safe. A must watch MMMF entry, especially with your family or even yourself (just don't slap your seatmate from laughing).
