When The Simpsons first debuted back in 1989, it was obviously unlike any other series that had come before it. But it still had its fair share of pop-culture influences. For one thing, the opening credit sequence was straight out of The Jetsons. And Matt Groening has said that much of the show was inspired by his love of classic sitcoms like Father Knows Best and Leave It to Beaver.

But the tone of The Simpsons can be traced back to two wildly different TV shows from the late ‘60s and early ‘70s.
