Movie Review: Maa screening in cinema halls near you!!
Touted as the 2nd film in Ajay Devgan's Shaitaan universe, Maa is a mytho-horror film starring Kajol, Indraneil Sengupta & Ronit Roy among the known faces in bollywood.
Set in the village of Chandrapur somewhere near Kolkata, it tells the story of Kajol , a mother battling supernatural forces to save her daughter!!
If u compare this film with Shaitaan u might find it a bit underwhelming. Though it has its jumpscare moments great editing, cinematography, BGM , the antagonist created with special effects seems somewhat like Groot who isn't half as scary as R Madhavan in Shaitaan. Special effects too are mediocre at the start though there are some great scenes towards the climax. The dull dark ambience definitely creates a feeling of unease that is apt for a movie of this genre.. great work there!!
It is Kajol's film all the way and she really gives it her all .. a restrained performance from her with no hamming or over the top scenes. Ronit Roy too has done well in his small yet impactful role.
The film is a mish-mash of Chhori, Stree and Shaitaan, yet failing to create the shock value seen in all the 3 films above.
A decent one time watch , not bad at all , but cudve been better!! Good production value overall!!
Going with 3/5 for this one .. adios 😊!!

Vishal Furia's "Maa," starring Kajol in her first full-fledged horror outing, attempts to blend mythological horror with a potent tale of a mother's fierce love. While the premise is intriguing, and Kajol delivers a spirited performance, the film struggles to maintain a consistent tone and often falls prey to genre cliches, leaving it more muddled than truly terrifying.
The film's ambition often outweighs its execution. The narrative, while rooted in compelling mythology, becomes predictable. The demon, despite ample screentime, fails to evoke genuine terror, often resembling more of a mid-budget CGI creation than a truly menacing entity. The writing is a significant weakness; despite tackling powerful themes of patriarchy and female strength, the script feels bland and repetitive in parts, losing its grip, particularly in the muddled second half and climax extremely disappointing. Better to watch on ott rather than going theatres.
The film's connection to the "Shaitaan" universe is present but doesn't necessarily elevate "Maa" in a significant way. While it aims for a compelling horror experience with a beating heart of maternal love, the inconsistent pacing, reliance on conventional horror tropes, and a surprisingly weak emotional core prevent "Maa" from reaching its full potential.

Pretty good movie with decent storyline but I don't know why Kajol's acting was way off , and obviously the plot is repeated the same logic to save the family u go out to somewhere else than one of your frnds call you back then something happens so your whole family have to come now at the end u face the enemy to be the ultimate galactic saviour ( obviously you will need god's power) you defeat the enemy and you be the hero I would rather recommend to watch SHAITAAN it's better than this m still giving this 5 starts coz other characters balanced the missing points but you can still feel the stretch again i dont have any hatred and this review isn't targetted to anyone this is my personal opinion.
The story is interesting- finally a proper horror with a decent budget to match the vfx.
Mythology meets current world , faith vs practicality..... but all in all a decent ride.
Kajol is top class - Hollywood keeps complaining they don't have a tom cruise replacement - we don't have a Kajol !!!!
30 years she's carried the mantle of being the best actress and only one who can change the way you look at screen.
And she doesn't let you down in the movie either - looks like a million bucks and acting well no one can touch her even now when there's an emotional scene involved.
See it with a practical mind set of letting mythology work and let it rule.
May the faith be with you.

I recently watched Maa, and overall, it was a pretty average but watchable film. Visually, it seemed like some scenes might have used AI or CGI to recreate past events, which gave it a slightly artificial feel at times. The movie isn't extraordinary or groundbreaking, but it does have an interesting mythological angle that adds some uniqueness to the story.
It's not the kind of movie that will leave a lasting impact, but if you're looking for a decent one-time watch in the theater, this could be a good pick. I enjoyed it for what it was - a simple story with a mythological twist that holds your attention. Don't expect too much, and you'll likely come out feeling satisfied.
