Well written and directed psychological thriller

Though not seen much Malayalam movies, I saw this movie by postive reviewes. I found movie absolutely fresh and well written.. story start with alone man working in remote area near railway crossing..his life change when he found girl near crossing...movie initially start slow to portray man's routine but after 30 minutes you will force to know story of both main characters..it's not typical masala movie but slow burn thriller...after minutes by minutes your excitement leval is gone up...I found main lead actor is very versatile...his dressing mannerism and involvement of character is fabulous.. definitely watch movie for thrilling elements..only downpart is climax.which I feel should done better.

A Journey Through the Desolation of the Desert

The film takes us to a desert where time and place become unrecognizable.

A railway track passes through the desert. Although there's no road crossing it, there is a level crossing.

In this desolation, a gateman and his donkey exist... and as each scene unfolds slowly, we are drawn into the story environment of 'Level Cross'.

Beautiful frames... Appu Prabhakar's cinematography allows us to enjoy three-quarters of 'Level Cross'.

The long shots, the slow pace of storytelling, the lack of dialogue, and the absence of many characters make the first half-hour a bit dull, but the film picks up as the train starts moving.

The film becomes engaging through predictable yet flawless interval blocks.

The director manages to confuse the audience by narrating the story of the three characters from different points of view.

Even though the film stands out for its technical excellence and unique narrative style, 'Level Cross' is not for everyone.

If you look closely at Asif Ali's performance as the gateman Raghu, you'll find shades of Mammootty's Putturumis and Mada. However, it's no small feat that Asif Ali managed to carry off the role so effectively.

Although Sharafuddin and Amala Paul handle their roles well, they are not given as challenging roles as Asif Ali's.

Vishal Chandrasekhar's background score blends magnificently with the film's mood. There are minor flaws in the set design, especially in the house near the level crossing, but they don't take away from the overall experience.

The twists in the second half enhance the enjoyment of the level crossing scenes.

In the end, I was convinced that the ghost story-the one about a spirit walking with its head turned around-was not just a subplot but an integral part of the narrative. The director doesn't hesitate to let the audience guess who the ghost really is.

Leaving aside the slow-paced storytelling and the overly dramatic dialogues, Arfaaz Ayub's 'Level Cross' is an experimental film with technical brilliance that deserves appreciation.

A Decent One Time Watch...

So after getting recommendations from Instagram Reels about this movie, I went to witness it's mystery which is definitely not made for all and of course suitable for those audiences who have patience and have no problems with slow burn conversational dramas.

From Storyline POV it's extremely simple and straightforward in nature. But if we put our philosophical theories in the End then it's gonna definitely amaze you. The Screenplay was also little bit in slower side however the duration of this entire movie is properly cut down for any average movie watchers. The Cinematography of this movie felt rich and brilliant especially in the first 12Min of this movie where the Director doesn't put any lines for the Character, The leading character and all over his surrounding was extremely silent But we can simply got the narration in details through our visual memories. You are gonna rate it High or Low depends on your understanding about it's Climax and those hard hitting Metaphors. From Acting POV the Male Leading character was definitely good and Amala Paul also did justice to her role. She looked like Deepika Padukone in this entire movie with same facial recognitions and same kind of Body structures. And another character's appearance was extremely less but good for sure.

From My side it will be 6 Out of 10 Stars for it and it's safe to go with 13+ but I'm not sure whether you are gonna watch it with family or not because 2 mild intimate scenes were there in this movie so choose accordingly. A decent one time watch...

Level Cross

Level Cross

A psychological thriller set amidst an imaginary landscape and terrain.

The plot of the movie reflects on Reghu, a Railway Cross Men who is living a remote and secluded life. One day a lady enters into his life unexpectedly and the weird situations that happens in his life afterwards forms the story.

Director has put in his best efforts to showcase various emotions like love, lust, anger, sympathy, empathy, betrayal through his characters in the movie. The movie is moderately paced and Arfaz has done minute detailing of all the three core characters in the story with deeper variations in their performance arc.

The interesting part of the storytelling is the director takes the story through the perspective of all three characters and leaves the audience perplexed.

Splendid performance by Asif Ali and the way he carries Reghu with the prosthetic teeth and makeup was subtle and spot on. The mannerisms he portrayed through his body language synced well with the situation. Impressive performance by Amala Paul and Sharaf.

Arfaz Ayub's debut directorial and the way he carried the movie with an offbeat subject gives the audience the assurance that he is from Jeethu' school of movies and should definitely be looked upto. Brilliant visualization of the barren landscape by Appu Prabhakar.

Arfaz Ayub's distinctive storytelling approach makes the movie worth a one time watch.

Rating - 3.25/5.

Brilliant movie on human relationships and how they evolve when two people from different backgrounds meet by sheer accident.

Asif Ali and Amala Paul excel in this movie. The two are different personalities coming from different backgrounds living in different environments, yet share some commonalities. Asif is crude and unrefined working as a gateman at a railway level crossing while Amala Paul is a psychiatrist.

They come to meet each other circumstantially in a remote desert setting at the Railway Level Crossing and embark on a process of mutual discovery on human relationships and life experiences.

Asif Ali excels in his mannerisms and body language as a crude and unrefined person but yet his personality is conditioned by his living circumstances.

Good, but not great.

Well, let me phrase out positives and negatives which I felt about the movie:

Positives * Asif Ali's performance was really good. Amala Paul was also good, but I didn't find the performance of Sharaf, that convincing.

* Movie was visually great. We all were wondering where is this shot. From the first scene itself, the movie took us into another far far place.

*Even though some parts of the movie was predictable, climax was not what thought was going to happen(Didn't see that coming!! 😅) *Even though the movie was slowly paced, it was interesting and we would feel curious on what is happening and what could happen *Dialogues were realistic * Definitely a good attempt in making

Negatives *Some part of the plot were totally predictable *Even though it was an interesting watch, it was not all that nail bitting thriller.

Overall, I would say a cliche sentence. Not everyone's cup of tea. But I really liked the making and aesthetically appealing visuals. To some extent, it was thrilling and interesting.

A Riveting Psychological Thriller in Malayalam Cinema

The latest Malayalam psychological thriller, Level Cross, is a captivating masterpiece that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats from start to finish. This film, featuring an innovative plot and stellar performances, marks a significant milestone in the genre within the Malayalam film industry.

The story revolves around three main characters, two of whom suffer from psychological disorders. As the narrative unfolds, the line between truth and deception becomes increasingly blurred, leaving the audience in a constant state of suspense. Each scene is meticulously crafted to deepen the mystery, making it nearly impossible to discern who is telling the truth and who is ensnared in their own delusions.

The exceptionally well-written screenplay and the director's innovative techniques create a constant sense of intrigue and flawless pacing, keeping viewers engaged every second.

The three main actors deliver outstanding, authentic performances. Asif Ali has done a great job; his body language and the expression in his eyes excel in performance.

A psychological thriller bringing a completely fresh experience to Mollywood.

*Levelcross,* starring Asif Ali, Amala Paul, and Sharafudheen, directed by Arfaz Ayub, offers a completely new experience in Mollywood with a storyline full of twists and turns. The film provides a decent amount of thrilling moments without spoon-feeding the audience, making viewers actively engage their brains to solve the puzzle. Asif Ali's portrayal of his character is remarkable, maintaining a consistent performance from start to finish. However, Amala Paul's performance felt somewhat boring in the middle, and Sharafudheen delivered an average performance. Arfaz Ayub's direction was different and new, and I appreciated his unique approach.

On the downside, the set design felt artificial in many places, which detracted from the movie's overall realism. Despite these flaws, *Levelcross* is a decent one-time watch with a lot of new experiences for the audience. The film's unique approach to storytelling and its engaging plot twists make it worth watching, even if there are areas where it could have been better.

Good attempt, but a bit slow at times

A good attempt from the creators. There are very few movies like this from Malayalam cinema. Asif Ali has done an amazing job and so far 2024 has been rewarding him so well, lots of good movies with characters of different shade.

The production design is the highlight of this film and the location also plays an important role in the movie. The movie is slow-paced and this is where it becomes a tedious task for the audience. It would have been great to wrap it up early but the movie went on and on. Even though it's only 90 minutes, I found the film somewhat difficult to watch. Many thriller elements could have been added to this movie but anyway I appreciate the effort from the director.

Movie carried more by good screenplay than mediocre story

The movie starts off at a slow pace, but picks up momentum gradually and stays engaging till the end. It is largely carried by the two protagonists - one male and one female - who take you one an emotional and psychological roller-coaster ride. Veteran movie-watchers would probably know that what's shown / heard isn't quite the real deal. No spoilers but I feel the movie was carried largely by its screenplay and not by its storyline which was somewhat predictable. A few more twists n turns in story would've made it more exciting. Also, some of the premise of the movie is unrealistic and implausible and one realizes that the filmmakers have taken cinematic license to depict certain things to justify the storyline.

Worth a watch though.

A Haunting Tangle of Truth, Trauma, and Twisted Identity

The film Levelcross is a cinematic work belonging to the mystery thriller drama genres, which was directed by Arfaz Ayub.

The narrative concerns Raghu, who is employed as a gatekeeper on the railway. The railway crossing is located in a deserted area, where only Raghu and his donkey are known to reside. The property is located in close proximity to the level crossing. There is no evidence of habitation. The necessity for him to travel extensively for the purpose of collecting water is indicative of a challenging living environment. On one occasion, a young female passenger was observed to leap from the moving train while the train was in the process of crossing. The subject sustained multiple injuries. Raghu subsequently took responsibility for her care, escorting her to his residence. Upon regaining consciousness, she experiences a strong inclination to depart from the location. However, it was not possible to proceed from that point. Raghu is a meticulous and attentive carer to her. The following day, he apprised her of the existence of a railway telephone. The functionality of the system is restricted exclusively to incoming data. The telephone is designed to activate when the train passes the final station prior to the level crossing. Raghu reassured her that he would inform about her by telephone. However, she declined the offer. In point of fact, the woman was forcibly removed from the train as a consequence of her decision to depart from her marital relationship. The subject is a medical practitioner specialising in psychiatry, who is known by the name of Chaithali. Her first patient was a young man named Zincho. Following a period of mental recovery, the pair subsequently fell in love and married. Following the nuptials, Zincho exhibited indications of psychological distress, which subsequently intensified. This constituted the rationale behind the act of jumping from the train. Raghu experienced romantic and sexual inclinations towards her. However, he demonstrated self-control. The subjects commenced a conventional existence in the locale. During the course of the investigation, Chaithali discovered an ID card and several new reports that indicated the individual in question was not Raghu. These new reports indicated that the individual had been involved in a family killing. She experienced a sense of trepidation in his presence. Subsequently, he divulged that his spouse had been unfaithful to him. It is evident that the individual in question committed the heinous crime of murdering his wife and children, and subsequently fled from his village. Upon arriving at the level crossing, it was observed that the individual known as Raghu was in fact engaged in his assigned duties at that location. He commenced cohabitation with him at that address. Following the demise of the original Raghu, he assumes the role of gatekeeper. It is evident that both Raghu and Chaithali have demonstrated a high level of emotional response and a strong sense of connection.

Subsequently, Zincho arrived at the location, seeking Chaithali. Raghu was prived to a similar account of Chaithali from Zincho. In this particular instance, however, the physician was Zincho and Chaithali was the patient. Raghu experiences a state of perplexity in their presence. Raghu made a request to Zincho that he should leave Chaithali unattended. In the given context, Chaithali struck Zincho with a rod. He becomes unconscious. Raghu subsequently caused the death of Zincho by repeatedly striking him. Subsequently, a medical report was obtained that indicated that Chaithali was the original patient. The film concluded with the revelation that the story of Raghu's infidelity story had been fabricated. The subject killed her previous girlfriend, and her family, because she refused him.

The narrative is characterised by a series of unexpected plot developments, creating a sense of suspense and intrigue. The subject is concerned with the secret lives and lies of humans.

The narrative was of adequate and the direction was excellent, with beautiful cinematography. The performances are also worthy of commendation. This is a valuable resource for individuals who wish to watch the film once.

Classic Cult

This is a film that's is going to stand the test of times. Whenever the best classic thrillers of Malayalam cinema will be listed (even after ages) Level Cross will find it's place in the list. A true to its genre cinema, slow burn thriller. Fresh story, innovative treatment, brilliant direction, great writing, super performances.

The film tells a story of an imaginary land, and slowly we become part of the world. We won't even know when we get so much into this, till late. This director is to be watched out. He has something special.

Good try ! Also, Lead actress and Deepika Padukone share same doctor

There is no strong story here..Just a plot ..few good shots and good looking Deepika. She looks exactly like Deepika. What an uncanny resemblance..even she can't act.lol. Asif Ali is good as always. Arfan Ayub was brought some wild wild west setting here with only three characters. Cinematography was cool..nothing out of the ordinary. Music was lame. The biggest problem is entire setting looks unreal..feels unreal. Not sure why real locations are not used for such movies..it increases the whoomp factor. Runtime is not long but without story it feels long. Screenplay could have been better with good twists..but I managed to figure these twists well in advance.

Level cross

This movie had the potential to be something really special. The concept is interesting, the cast shows promise, and you can tell there was genuine effort put into making it work. Unfortunately, the script just doesn't hold up.

It feels like the writer had a strong vision for the story, but lacked the skill to bring it to life. The dialogues are awkward, the pacing is off, and many scenes feel forced or underdeveloped. You can sense that the writer is probably new to the craft and it shows in almost every part of the screenplay.

It's frustrating because this could've been a good movie if the script had been handled better. The foundation is there, but it desperately needed a more experienced hand to shape it into something compelling. Instead, we're left with a film that falls flat, not because of the idea but because of how poorly it was written.

Suspense drama which keeps you guessing

It was one of those movies I had no idea about until I saw it on Prime Video's banner. I'm glad I found it, or I would have missed out on a thrilling watch.

The story revolves around a woman who unexpectedly meets an unruly railway gatekeeper at a deserted level crossing due to unforeseen circumstances. They share their experiences, which lead to major revelations coming to light.

This is a film you need to give time to sink in, as it's slow-paced and takes time to establish the narrative. But once the characters start to open up, it's like unveiling a deck of cards-you have no idea who holds what. A game of lies, deception, and betrayal begins, keeping you on the edge of your seat as you try to figure out who to trust. While a few twists might be predictable, they don't detract from the fun of watching the suspense unfold.

Lately, Asif Ali has been part of some interesting projects, and this film adds to the list. He has nailed his role, from his mannerisms to the nuances of his character, making you root for him. He deserves national accolades for this performance. Amala Paul, returning to the screen after a long break, leaves her mark with a brilliant portrayal of a timid yet strong character. Sharaf U Dheen, though limited in screen time, ensures his presence is felt with a layered performance in flashbacks, doing a fabulous job.

Credit goes to Arfaz Ayub, who directed the film masterfully, making the most of just three characters and a small location. His skillful direction keeps you glued to your seat. The twists and turns are the film's highlight. Special mention to the makeup artist for Asif Ali, who made him look the part and added gravitas to the film. Caution, there is one gruesome scene, so it's not suitable for kids.

This movie is highly recommended for all movie lovers looking for something different. Once again, Malayalam cinema offers a unique experience for viewers.

Watch it for whole new experience

Arfaz killed it with his new movie. The way he shot every single scene is absolutely amazing, like artwork.

Amala perfectly executed the role of unpredictable character. Sharaf played his part brilliantly, but my god, Asif Ali, who is a great act actor by him, definitely deserves a spot in nomination for the state award and one of his best performances. For sure, every frame in the movie is an amazing shot. The story is not a typical story which we see on a daily basis, a perfect physiological drama with a tinge of thriller, so would definitely recommend being worth a watch and can be seen by family must watch gripping screenplay and absolute top-notch performance by the lead actors.sure,

Brilliant movie!

Level Cross gives an intense, mind-bending experience that grips the audience until its jaw-dropping climax. Directed by the very talented Arfaz Ayub, a promising filmmaker, this movie shows off his incredible skill in telling a complex, unsettling story that keeps you on the edge of your seat.

The performances of all three acters were spectacular. The director deserves immense credit for creating a gripping story that keeps you hooked the whole time, pulling you deeper into the characters' psychological conflicts. His masterful handling of pacing, and visuals show real talent, making this film a standout in the thriller genre. He could bring new elements that keep the suspense alive. By the time we reach the climax, we are so wrapped up in the story. The final twist is the real game-changer that make us question what all we watched and it leaves us stunned. The real brilliance of the director can be seen in the scripting as well as the making of this mysterious psychological thriller. The background score, cinematography, and editing also deserve much appreciation, taking this movie to a Hollywood-level experience. Absolutely worth your time. Highly recommended.

Brilliant way of storytelling!

A psychological thriller genre that makes the best of it. The entire story does have only 3 characters. Story revolves around a so claimed gate keeper of a level crossing deserted land. There unexpectedly jumps a lady from moving train ends up taking shelter at his place. There follows a jugglery amongst viewers to decide who is psychotic. What is unique about the movie is brilliant way of storytelling! A very slow burner which is apt to the storyline. Even the location at which entire film is shot is picturesque. Originally a Malayalam movie dubbed in all South Indian languages including Hindi. Available in Amazon Prime n my ratings 8/10!

A Good Psychological Thriller: Which for me is a hidden gem

A nice movie overall with a good story which explores the complexities in human emotions and looks at how 2 psychopaths interact with each other in different way. The acting was the highlight with especially Asif ali doing a brilliant job in an experimental role which has been done by him rarely. Sharfudeen was my second highlight who did the role with great conviction and resolve. The other aspects of story could have been better as it was slow and some of the scenes felt a little bit predictable but the climax was the true highlight in this front for me as it blown out of the park and made the story not predictable at all. Overall a hidden gem.
