More than 10 years ago, Judy Sheindlin found herself “enraged” over the outcome of a high-profile legal case in New York City.
The celebrated TV jurist — better known as Judge Judy — channeled her surplus energy into developing an unscripted series for CBS to examine hugely significant, precedent-setting legal cases. The idea was to recreate the original arguments to study the legal theories and the courtroom jousts that shaped landmark decisions.
The project never got off the ground at CBS. But earlier this month, Sheindlin’s vision for the show took shape with the debut of “Justice on Trial” on Amazon Prime Video. It’s no accident that the series’ initial eight episodes launched on July 21, which marked the 100th anniversary of the famous Scopes trial over a Tennessee high school science teacher’s effort to instruct his students on Darwin’s theory of evolution. Yes, the Scopes trial is one of the eight cases tackled.

Prime Video’s Tribunal Justice is on track for a September 8 launch in U.S. broadcast syndication. The court show’s distributor, Scott Koondel‘s Sox Entertainment, has closed multi-year deals in TV markets covering nearly 95% of the country. That includes pacts with major broadcast groups including Nexstar, Gray, Sinclair, Tegna, Hearst, Sunbeam, Cox Media, Scripps, Weigel, Mission, News Press and Marquee.
On many of the stations, Tribunal Justice could potentially be paired up in a block with fellow Prime Video court show Judy Justice, which Sox launched in broadcast syndication this past fall. Both programs have been sold in similar straight-barter deals.
“Tribunal Justice’s successful syndication launch was further validation that the streaming to broadcast syndication model is vibrant,” Koondel said. “With eight series being cancelled this year. Judy Justice has been the only successful syndication launch for many years and has paved the a path of success for Tribunal Justice.

Exclusive: Ahead of Tribunal Justice‘s Season 2 premiere on Prime Video, slated for early 2025, the daily court show created and executive produced by Judge Judy Sheindlin has been renewed by the streamer for a third season, Deadline has learned. Production is slated to begin next week.
With 170 episodes in the can (and around 300 when Season 3 is factored in), Tribunal Justice‘s distributor, Scott Koondel’s Sox Entertainment, is gearing up to launch the program in broadcast syndication in fall 2025. That is a year ahead of Sox’s original plan for Tribunal Justice to roll out in fall 2026, a move motivated by the success of the fall 2024 launch of Sox’s other Sheindlin series for Prime Video, Judy Justice, as well as available TV stations shelf space amid declining current syndicated shows and dearth of viable new offerings.
Like Judy Justice, which has been renewed through Season 4, Tribunal Justice was an Amazon Freevee original.

On Tuesday, Amazon announced that it would “phase out” Freevee, its ad-supported video-on-demand streaming service. It is perhaps best known as being the original home of “Jury Duty,” which received four Emmy nominations in 2023 for Best Comedy Series, James Marsden as Best Comedy Supporting Actor, Mekki Leeper as Best Comedy Writing, and Best Comedy Casting. The mockumentary was designed to be a one-off, so a second season was never ordered.
Amazon Freevee will shut down “over the coming weeks,” according to our sister site Deadline. Its content has already migrated over to Prime Video, a paid service. But if you aren’t a Prime subscriber, don’t worry — new episodes of Freevee shows will be available there at no charge. Besides “Jury Duty,” some of Freevee’s original programming includes “Bosch: Legacy,” “Judy Justice,” “Neighbours,” “Tribunal Justice,” and “America’s Test Kitchen: The Next Generation.”

Amazon Freevee, the ad-supported streaming service that brought audiences popular originals like Bosch: Legacy, Jury Duty, and Judy Justice, will officially be phased out over the coming weeks. Content from Freevee has already migrated to Prime Video and will remain accessible there, including shows like Neighbours, Tribunal Justice, and Americas Test Kitchen: The Next Generation, all available in front of the paywall for non-Prime members. The change is going to be implemented across Freevees available territories: the U.S., UK, Germany, and Austria. Instead of separate Freevee branding, shows that were once exclusive to Freevee will be marked as Watch for Free on their Prime Video detail pages, consolidating Amazons streaming offerings into one cohesive platform.
