there were few reasons for why I decided to watch the movie (Despite warnings from my clever friends, who I should listen in the first place).
Reason #1: I like 2 actors who took part in this movie, they are Danny Glover and Vinnie Jones. They're not biggest actors in the world but they are likable fellows who certainly know how to entertain audience.
Reason #2: I like steam-punk and fantasy genres and the movie was promising to mix those two.
Reason #3: I think that Moby-Dick is one of those literature classics that is hard to dislike or hard to be unknown for almost anyone, even the most uneducated people, so it is always interesting when another version of the story occurs on the screens.
So I had 3 great reasons to watch the movie. Favorite actors, favorite genre and the masterpiece, on which the story is based.
I don't know how they managed to screw this, but EVERYTHING in this movie went wrong right from the start.
Actors who knew how to act had nothing to work with. Main character was screaming and begging for overacting and Danny didn't deny him the pleasure. Jones tried to act (his biggest mistake) but that's not what we love him for, so he failed. Other actors weren't actors at all. Maybe they have diplomas, but they didn't act. Oh... and the chick... well, the chick was hot.
The movie is steam-punk without steam, and it's fantasy, only because there are dragons. I can understand how the vagon/ship thing moved though. It was this vitriom (or something) that made it move but they never say a thing about it. The screen was absolutely stripped off by fantasy elements as well. The action was almost non-existent, landscape and surroundings were cheap and the world didn't have anything that makes you dig deeper into the particular universe's lore. Well... at least the chick was hot.
While the plot was based on Moby-Dick, it was stripped away from most interesting points, lowered down to some stupid cheap revenge-story and all the weight of explaining the meaning of the book was thrown at Glover's back. The old man just can't carry that much. Well, the bright side of this was the fact that the chick was hot.
What else can we tell about hour and half of my lost life? That this movie will hardly please anyone, except guys who were paid for making it.
I was going to give this movie 2 stars, instead of one, for only reason: The chick was hot... BUT... God damn it... We didn't even see her naked...

This adaption of Moby Dick was terrible! I love SciFi and watched the whole thing anyway. Basically, it's dragons in stead of whales and a white dragon in stead of a white whale. It features a crazy land-ship that's bigger on the inside than it is on the outside; it sleeps eight people in separate quarters, kitchen/dining/storage and office in a vehicle the size of a bus. Propulsion of the ship left me scratching my head too - no sails, no horses pulling it, no steam engine, it just rolls on wooden wheels in an age of harpoons and cross bows - I didn't get it. The effects were reasonably good. I liked most of the actors. But the premise, story line and dialog were so bad that it took down the entire movie to a (1) "awful".
Summary: The movie was bad. Don't watch it unless you really are desperate.
Details: This is a steampunk version of Moby Dick where they follow the dragons in a huge wagon across snow covered mountains to chase and lance dragons.
People love to complain about the special effects in SyFy channel movies. I found it adequate, better than older Science Fiction classics like Forbidden Planet. The acting was not great but that wasn't what killed the movie. It was the script. It was horrible, rank even by SyFy channel's low standards.
You don't need a huge budget to make a wonderful Science Fiction movie if you have a good script. The Man From Earth is an outstanding example. A cast of eleven and no special effects, yet it was marvelous. This had a comparatively huge budget with costumes, sets, scenes, special effects explosions, everything except a decent script.
We all know that SyFy loves to inflict bad movies on its audience. Why it only chooses such rank scripts, I have no idea. But this one should have been rejected even by them. You can't take a classic story that has been done so well by so many and just do a plot less, trash version without being laughed at.

I don't understand all the hate and the 1/10 for this movie. Sure it won't be my movie of the year, or i can't say i was amaze by it, but i was sure entertained. The special effect are better than what i expected for a movie i came across randomly without any theatre release. The chicks is hot and i like her character just like Ishmael. People complain about the acting, maybe its cause i watched the movie in french(dubbed) but it was very correct, nothing to complain on this...
Basically i watched this at late night whitout expecting much and i was entertain and liked it. I saw way worse movie with bigger budget, and even winning Oscars...(ahem... hurtlocker...)

This movie is so full of clichés that it could actually be a spoof.
If you have never seen a movie before or if you want to have a good laugh you might like the movie.
The movie was funnier than its Outtakes. Without wanting to be.
- Bad acting (especially the main characters with their permanent "WTF??" look on their faces)That's why Danny Glover seemed like he was overacting cause he was one of the only talented actors in the movie.
- From the beginning almost everything that will happen later is obvious
- The good-guy & the cool chick everyone has a crush on are the main characters (as always)
- Almost nothing that happens has a deeper meaning or reason
- Most of the characters are so flat that you will be disappointed if you want to know a lot about their background stories.
- Many things the characters do don't make any sense

Le saviez-vous
- AnecdotesDanny Glover was available for only eleven days for filming, so they wrote into Ahab's backstory that he was burned by a dragon, and could not allow his skin to be exposed to the sun. The few scenes where you see his face, were indoors, at night, or during a snowstorm. The other scenes were played by a double, with the lines read by Glover in a studio on his last day of availability.
