Don't Go Outside

After seeing the creepy Sci-Fi Horror of Nova (2019-also reviewed) I decided to continue checking the selection of shorts at Grimmfest,by going outside.

Making the film on her birthday as a present to herself whilst under lockdown, writer/director/ lead actress Natasha Halevi shooting the film on Super-8 Film gives the tale a enticing washed-out colour palette, with striking post-synced sound layering the eerie, disconnected atmosphere.

Directly touching on the lockdown, the screenplay by Halevi cleverly builds on the chills from the mysterious phone calls which keep repeatedly telling her to not go outside, and to stay in the isolated house,until she decides to hang up the phone and step outside.

So into this creepy vibe! This film is scary without really even being scary - it builds such an eerie vibe with such simple moves that it gives you goosebumps for no reason, but for every reason! Can't want to see what this director would do with a feature. Saw this at Grimmfest!

Brilliant short movie, expressing the pandemic claustrophobia, isolation and desperation in a light almost ironic way. Impressive is also how much a single person can achieve, acting, directing, filming in a single location. A nice exercise in minimalism!
