Loosely based on a stalking case involving Madonna in the 1990s. In 1996, a violent man was convicted and sentenced to ten years for stalking and threatening the life of pop legend Madonna, with the man reportedly telling her bodyguard that he intended to slit her throat if she didn't marry him. That man would later escape the mental hospital but was quickly apprehended again before any further harm was caused.
Writer / director Jimmy Warden and lead star Samara Weaving are married in real-life.
One of the crossed off names on Sofia's list is Antonio Banderas. Banderas starred in Tie Me Up Tie Me Down, which had a similar plot of a mental patient kidnapping a celebrity in order to marry her.
Sports star Rhodes (Jimmie Fails), is a stand-in for Dennis Rodman who had brief but highly publicised relationship with Madonna (who Samara Weaving's character is based on) in 1994.
The song the police officer is singing on the street outside Bell's house is 'Top Hat, White Tie and Tails' from the 1935 Fred Astaire film 'Top Hat'
