FAQ

Demon Slayer: Le train de l'infini

FAQ

This is an anime movie, not a live-action one (a live-action movie based on the same comic has been reported by the Japanese press to be in development at TOHO).

It is rated PG12 in Japan, but ratings in other countries are likely to be higher.

For example, it has been rated R by the MPAA for "violence and bloody images" for the USA, meaning that children under 17 require an accompanying parent or adult guardian to be admitted. Early reports from the Japanese audience indicate that it is at least somewhat more violent than the (generally recommended for 13+) first season of the television series.

It is likely that anyone who could handle the series can handle the movie, and, in fact, the movie will be necessary to understand the animated series' second season (unless one reads the story arc it is based on in the original comic, which is recommended for 13+ by its English-language publisher). However, proceed with caution.

As of April 2021, in all the countries in which the movie has been released so far, it has been initially released in cinemas only, with online and disc releases set to follow no sooner than a few months afterwards.

In the USA and Canada, the movie was released in cinemas on 23 April and will be available to rent or buy online from 22 June 2021.

Online releases in other regions will likely follow the cinema releases there after a similar amount of time (around two months later).

This is likely due to restrictions imposed on all international distributors by Aniplex, who control the international distribution rights to the movie.

While in the West, windows of theatrical exclusivity have over the last decade been increasingly reduced compared to those before the 2010s or even completely eliminated, in Japan, six-month theatrical windows are still standard, and Japanese rights-holders tend to expect international distributors to play by Japanese rules, to some extent, and have a window of at least a couple of months between cinema and online releases, and also to not release the movie on disc until at least a few months after the Japanese disc release (to try to reduce the chance of Japanese people reverse-importing cheaper foreign editions).

It will be released on Blu-ray Disc and DVD in Japan on 16 June 2021. The Japanese editions have English subtitles and the Blu-ray Disc is all regions, but the DVDs are region-2-locked and none include the English-language dub.

As of April 2021, have been no Blu-ray Disc release dates for other countries announced so far. They are likely to be a few months after the Japanese release at the earliest.

    No.

The movie somewhat explains the important points, albeit superficially. While it can and does work as a stand alone adaptation, you will certainly be better off watching the series first, or at least watching a brief overview of the series.
