Ron Simmons was a last-minute substitute for "Rowdy" Roddy Piper on Ric Flair's team, as Piper was unable to partake in the event due to suffering from Hodgkin's lymphoma. Prior to going with Simmons, the first choice to fill in for Piper was another one of Flair's old rivals from WCW, Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat (Richard Blood), who had not wrestled since 1994. There was one problem: Steamboat didn't own the rights to his ring name, which were owned by his ex-wife Bonnie as part of their divorce settlement. WWE reportedly tried to talk Bonnie into allowing Steamboat to use his name for the event and some surrounding television shows, but she refused. Eventually, Bonnie would give Steamboat his wrestling persona back when he got inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2009 and wrestled at both The 25th Anniversary of WrestleMania (2009) and WWE Backlash (2009).
