Could have been much, much better

The plot of this movie is fairly straightforward: 30 years ago a geek was accidentally murdered by some cool frat boys who took their "good old-fashioned geek bashing" a bit too far. The frat boys, being cool and rich, covered up their mistake and life went on as normal.

Now, 30 years later, the sons of the 5 frat boys responsible for the murder are following in the footsteps of their fathers – they're cool, they're frat and they make fun of geeks.

Enter the geekette, who bears some resemblance to the murdered geek – she's awkward, smart, wears glasses, seeks acceptance and is the butt of everyone's joke. After finding a 30-year old class ring – belonging to, guess who? – she begins to change. She sheds her ugly duckling image and becomes the new hot girl on campus (because if movies teach us anything, it's that all geekettes are hot girls just waiting for a cool person – or in this case, a malevolent, revenge-driven spirit – to take them under their wing).

The biggest problem with this movie is that it doesn't seem to know what it wants to be. I was expecting a cheesy B-Horror, but it failed all my cheesy B-Horror expectations. First, it wasn't scary, and didn't even try to be scary. The "murder" scenes consisted of the geek-girl's eyes flashing red as bad things happened to whomever she happened to be looking at. And the bad things? Please. The first death resulted from one of the frat boys failing to lift a barbell and the barbell landing on his neck. Was he decapitated? No. He just choked a little. Which brings me to my next point: no gore. No cheesy special effects. One of the frat boys died due to peanut allergies. No joke.

This movie also had no nudity which, though not essential for a B-Horror, is still appreciated. The closest you'll find are some homo-erotic scenes with the frat boys.

In addition, the logic behind this movie is so flawed I just couldn't get passed it. So you have 5 frat boys who accidentally murder a geek in 1975. Okay, I get it. What I don't get is how these frat boys, coincidentally, all have children 10 years later, and that, also coincidentally, all the children are boys. I mean, do frat boys end up spending the rest of their lives consulting each other as to what they should do? Do they carry a calendar with them that marks off important dates, like, "1981: Get married." "1984, June onwards: Impregnate wife." "1985: Have a baby boy. If girl, then adopt a baby boy." Needless to say, I just don't buy it.

This movie wasn't bad. It just didn't do anything particularly well.

Unscary and uninspired, but surprisingly gay'ish wannabe supernatural thriller

It's hard to find anything positive to say about this movie. Okay, I guess they meant well, and the premise is maybe farfetched, but for a supernatural horror/thriller not that bad: freshman student Becky finds an old ring that used to belong to a long time ago murdered student, who's vengeful spirit possesses Becky to turn his wrath on the present sons of the then bashers. But that's about it on the positive side.

I saw the movie on YouTube and the image-quality was really bad. The editing was awkward, with many scenes cut-off abruptly or dragged way too long. The direction made many weird choices, like letting Becky supposedly snoop around in secret in the guys dorm, but making her stand almost in full sight without anybody noticing her; or turning her eyes piercing red every time she got possessed, making her look like a battery operated Barbie doll with electric eyes. Special effects were non existent, and the killings were simple and unconvincing. On top of all this, the acting was really below par: Raquel Riskin and Cory Monteith (years before his relative fame in Glee) looked both reasonably cute, but talked and walked like uninspired robots.

There was just one bright redeeming aspect, albeit probably only for people like myself: for some unfathomable reason they made the male students time and again strip to their tighty whities and behave unintended, yet unmistakably gay, like doing their fitness routines half naked, or rubbing their torsos sensually with liquor. So this one and a half hour wasn't totally wasted, and worth my three stars.

Homo-erotic B Movie

Being a woman, I don't spend much time in the boy's locker room...

But I am pretty sure campus locker rooms aren't filled to the brim with a bunch of half naked soccer players downing liquor like water...

And sucking on red suckers...

Terrible movie. Don't bother.

Good movie—even for a B

I knew to expect a B-movie, but was surprised by the quality of the script, editing and camera work. The vast majority of B-movies often start out pretty good but break down by the middle of the script. This one does not. DeCoteau does a decent job on his movies, as his reputation has earned, and this one does not disappoint. Paula Shaw puts in the best performance of the cast as Janine Gordon (the counselor), but Raquel Riskin was a surprising treat in her first lead role. She has a presence on camera, is a looker, and may be one to watch in future roles. Of course, the majority of acting may be B-quality, but so much of how a performer or scene comes across is due to the directing and, even moreso, the editing and post-production work — all of which are directly related to budget. Shaw and Riskin, particularly, seemed able to rise above these obstacles and put in good performances nonetheless. This may be a low-budget film, but well worth the watch.

Not bad at all.

Totally worthy of a viewing. Especially if you're watching it just to avoid doing something else, or you're not really that into it to begin with. It was classic Decoteau. The plot, about a possessed girl who becomes popular (perhaps because of the possession, perhaps not... that's kinda debatable) at least gives Decoteau a good reason to let his camera oggle hot guys. The acting was definitely b-quality, which, really, is what one would expect in a b-movie. Decent plot, hot guys, plenty of scenes with the hot guys, requisite scene with boys rubbing each other down in their boxer briefs. The ending, which I won't mention, was bad. Not super-bad, but bad.

A good old fashioned horror movie

I read the review on this site which said that it didn't have all the gore so that is why I decided to watch it. I remember how much I used to enjoy a good horror movie before all the gore got into them. Most of those ones I never watch. I was into horror movies 50 years ago and they didn't have the gore then either. When that started I gave up viewing horror shows so it was nice to be able to see one again. The review was very helpful in making my decision to view this movie

I liked the plot and the actors were all good. I have nothing to say against it.

Good job.. hope to see more of the same.

Superb

For an independent film without much hype, Killer Bash was greatly entertaining and Raquel Riskin is a great new actress.

The story moves along to an exciting finish.

I liked the subtlety of parts of the story and sophistication of the characters.

Good writing!

The support characters were believable also.

The location is perfect and the drama unfolds in the daylight and in the dark. In fact, most of the scariest scenes are in broad daylight - different - excellent.
