In my opinion it pretends to be a complex movie and tries to mess up with ours heads when it totally changes the feelings which are supposed to exist in a relationship between two people just by sex, but it didn't achieve that goal, because it's too superficial at some crucial moments and characters aren't themselves too deep. There isn't really a plot, but a sequence of scenes, most of them sex scenes! But just sex is not enough to keep a relationship or even to make a movie (except if it is a porno ), and sometimes this film seems to be just sex!
Beside that, the entire "story" is too centered in the main character. From the beginning it seems we are seeing a monologue, a "secret diary", where she tells us her intimacy, her desires, her obsession about sex and, most important of all, her incapacity to love! But her "secret diary" is not made from words sex is the only way to communicate! Once again, it's not enough
its somewhat of a popular phenomenon in these post-modern times, for producers to use sex as an art form. i can respect that, but instead of fitting sex into the "whole", this pretentious drivel is obsessed with showing needless flesh(to the point it actually becomes boring, to tell you the truth) instead of trying to tell a story, this is just a bunch of sex scenes with some half a**d-redundant female narrative slapped here and there so he could call this junk "art", which leads me to think its because he wanted to be either extremely "controvertial", or "uber liberal"(which is why i suspect the movie is popular amongst the female crowd mostly, and not for its artistic merits).
while the above mentioned reason is mainly why the film falls flat on its face, add to that the god-Awful acting(David looks as if he has been pulled of some late night skin flick where he butchers the art of acting on a regular basis)along with a ridiculously primitive pacing(yea, non linear plots can work, as David lynch hauntingly proved over and over again, but on "lie with me", its just laughable). and this movie is a complete and utter failure, unless maybe you couldn't find anything else on late night TV to jerk off to.
In acting this tale of the struggle between sheer lust and real love, both leads radiate a subtlety of emotion through facial expression and body posture that makes the largely non-conversational characters "speak" in articulated ways. The sparse voice-overs effectively assist the development of the relationship. In a society where wide sexual experimentation at early ages exposes many to the pitfalls this film explores, this is a strong statement about the human hunger for love and real relationship.

- AnecdotesLauren Lee Smith recalls getting a call from her agent on the requirements for the role of Leila, which clearly included not only nudity but on-camera live sex. "I said, 'Are you kidding?'" Then she read the script and recognized its origins. Then director Clement Virgo asked her to audition with Eric Balfour, whom he'd interviewed in Los Angeles. Virgo got them into a room to check their chemistry because he knew that without chemistry they had no movie. "There was apparently chemistry," Smith affirmed giving a giddy laughs.
- GaffesDavid's apartment number is 101 when Leila leaves, but when the blonde girlfriend leaves, it's 116.

David: I can't stop thinking about you. All day. All night. All I do is think about you, it's all I have left
[David takes Leila from behind, Leila gasps as they have sex]
David: Answer me. Tell me - tell me you feel the same way I do. Tell me you're never gonna leave me, promise me.
Leila: Never. Ever.
David: Promise me you're never gonna leave me.
Leila: Never.
David: Promise me.
Leila: Sure.
[they finish having sex, David lies down and rests his head on her back]
David: [weeps quietly; whispers:] I love you.
