I love me some Tom Berenger behind a rifle scope. Remember 1993′s “Sniper”? That movie launched a franchise, though if you don’t partake in the direct-to-dvd movie market, you may not have known that. I did, and I’ve seen all of the “Sniper” movies, including 2002′s pretty good “Sniper 2″ and the equally pretty good “Sniper 3″ in 2004. Seven years later, we got the not-at-all-bad but unfortunately Tom Berenger-less “Sniper: Reloaded.” Although Berenger didn’t show up for “Reloaded,” his co-star from the original “Sniper,” Billy Zane, did. That film also introduced Chad Michael Collins as the son of Berenger’s character, who is also a sniper just like dear ol dad. The latest is “Sniper: Legacy,” which teams Collins and Berenger as father-and-son, thus bringing, I guess, the franchise full-circle. Or some such. The point, is it’s Tom Berenger back behind a rifle scope shooting fools!

Considering that I believe the stealth missions of the Call of Duty Modern Warfare franchise are some of the best the games have to offer, I came to Sniper 2 with some high expectations that on the whole didn’t disappoint. However there are a few holes in both the story and the gameplay that brought it down a notch. Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 follows Captain Cole Anderson on three missions, varying from urban combat in Sarajevo, the tropical jungles in Burma and the mountains of Tibet. Applying realistic bullet physics, players need to factor in distance, wind and bullet drop when sniping targets, which is assisted by a red dot that calculates all these variables for you. If you want a proper challenge, put the game on maximum difficulty and you have to judge for yourself.

Sniper Elite V2 is the revision/reboot-cum-sequel to Rebellion’s 2005 release Sniper Elite. A game which is remembered by fans and immortalised on Youtube, for being a genuinely challenging, but ultimately rewarding mix of risk and reward gameplay. The premise was simple, you’re a WWII era American sniper behind enemy lines, picking off Nazi’s from the other side of a scope. The challenge arose from the realistic ballistics, which demanded the player compensate for gravity, wind and other factors such as the character’s breathing. -You know, like that mission in Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare where you sneak through the grass, get to a tower and shoot a nasty, leather wearing fellow in the arm. Well Sniper Elite was a game dedicated to that idea of infiltration and then elimination, it also gifted players who mastered the demanding gameplay with a visual orgasm (à la gory kill cams). A security camera reveals the interior of an empty supermarket. The grainy black and white image is shattered when a grizzly figure wearing a cut off muscle T and a greasy ponytail smashes the lens with the butt of a gun.
