Lindsay Lohan & 4 More Christmas Movie Stars You Forgot Were In Soaps
Image
While some soap stars stick to the drama of daytime, others branch into movies of the holiday variety. Here are five Christmas movie stars you forgot appeared on soaps.

Lindsay Lohan

It was just before she pulled double duty in The Parent Trap that Lindsay Lohan held a recurring role on Another World as Alli. Her character lasted a year before the character exited and was later recast, but that wasn’t Lohan’s first daytime role. In 1993, the actress appeared on Guiding Light as Chrissie.

While Lohan has since made a name for herself in recent years starring in Christmas romcoms on Netflix, like Falling for Christmas and Our Little Secret, you also can’t forget the iconic scene in Mean Girls where the group perform some sexy choreography to “Jingle Bell Rock.”

Trevor Donovan

Many may not know that Trevor Donovan was once a part of the Horton family,...

‘A Nonsense Christmas With Sabrina Carpenter’: All The Songs You’ll Hear
Image
Sabrina Carpenter does have the same initials as Santa Claus, so it only makes sense that she would have a musical comedy holiday special with guest stars on Netflix. The singer’s 50-minute segment, A Nonsense Christmas With Sabrina Carpenter, streaming as of the evening of Friday, Dec. 6 contained several familiar faces, both musically and in the comedy and acting worlds.

Sadly, there was no sign of Marcello Hernández’s Domingo, but Nico Hiraga played an impressive modern day Ebenezer “Ebby” Scrooge. Carpenter performed musical duets with powerhouse singers Tyla, Shania Twain, Kali Uchis and Chappell Roan while she acted alongside Quinta Brunson, Cara Delevingne, Kyle Mooney, Megan Stalter, Sean Astin, Owen Thiele and Jillian Bell.

She was pitched several “Nonsense” outtros that ranged from bad to “not the worst.” She sang several songs from her holiday EP “Fruitcake” in addition to some Christmas classics like “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year,...

All of the Songs in Sabrina Carpenter’s Netflix Special, Including Her Duet with Chappell Roan
Image
It’s not your mama’s Christmas special. After a whirlwind year Sabrina Carpenter hosted her first variety special on Netflix.

“You could have been anywhere tonight..But instead you’re here half-watching a big screen while scrolling social media on a smaller screen and for that I’m forever grateful,” she said to her studio audience.

“A Nonsense Christmas with Sabrina Carpenter” leans into the popstar’s old Hollywood glamour look with a touch of her signature raunchy twist.

The Grammy-nominated singer joined forces with talented guest stars, including duets with Tyla, Chappell Roan, Kali Uchis and Shania Twain. A couple of the star’s celebrity friends also stopped by, including Quinta Brunson, Cara Delevingne, Nico Hiraga, Kyle Mooney, Owen Thiele, Megan Stalter, Kyle Mooney and Jillian Bell.

The 5 Best Moments From Sabrina Carpenter’s ‘Nonsense Christmas’ Special, Including That Chappell Roan Duet
Image
“It’s the ho, ho, ho-iest special of all!”

Sabrina Carpenter’s “Nonsense Christmas” show arrived on Netflix on Friday. Highlighting her 2023 “Fruitcake” EP, the 49-minute show was chock-full of celebrity appearances, sketch comedy and a blend of her festive tunes and Christmas classics with Carpenter’s signature remixed lyrics.

While some of Carpenter’s holiday tracks are as Nsfw as her beloved “Nonsense” outros and “Short n’ Sweet” lyrics, her Netflix special — directed by Sam Wrench — had the challenge of remaining TV-14. As Carpenter sang, “You can watch with your aunties, I might mention panties, but don’t fret, it’s TV-14,” before saying, “which means I’m allowed to say ‘fuck’ three times. Fuck! Just one left.”

“There are comedy specials, and there are musical specials, and there are holiday specials. But who does musical comedy holiday specials? A lot of people,” Carpenter quipped midway through her “It...

Watch Jon Hamm and Jimmy Fallon Perform Dramatic Versions of Popular Christmas Carols
Image
Jon Hamm stopped by The Tonight Show to discuss his role in the upcoming Mean Girls movie and took the opportunity to showcase his impressive dramatic acting skills. Host Jimmy Fallon challenged the actor to recount a few popular Christmas carols in his best theatrical tone after mentioning Hamm’s recent Golden Globe nod for Fargo.

In the clip, the pair took turns randomly selecting a card with carol lyrics and then interpreting them dramatically. Hamm kicked things off with “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus,” which took a depressing turn.

Mariah Carey
The 15 Worst Christmas Songs of All Time
Mariah Carey
It’s that time of the year again. Mariah Carey has been defrosted. “Black Friday” sales seem to last for weeks. Last-minute treks to the gym fail to absolve your guilt over that third slice of pecan pie. Unfortunately, we’ll also have to endure a litany of ill-conceived and poorly executed Christmas songs that are inexplicably resurrected every year, and will likely be until time immemorial. Here are 15 of the absolute worst offenders. Apologies in advance.

Editor’s Note: This article was originally published on November 28, 2011. Need a palate cleanser? Check out a playlist of some of our holiday favorites.

15. Sia, “Puppies Are Forever”

A track from Sia’s 2017 collection of holiday originals, Everyday Is Christmas, “Puppies Are Forever” is a reggae-vibed public service announcement about, well, how puppies are not forever: “They’re so cute and fluffy with shiny coats/But will you love ‘em when they’re old and slow?...

Ronnie Spector Dies: Iconic “Be My Baby” Singer Who Fronted ’60s Girl Group The Ronettes Was 78
Image
Ronnie Spector, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer who fronted classic 1960s girl group the Ronettes, delivered the iconic vocal on their hit “Be My Baby” and counted many of rock’s biggest names as fans, died today of cancer. She was 78.

Here family shared the news on her official website:

Our beloved earth angel, Ronnie, peacefully left this world today after a brief battle with cancer. She was with family and in the arms of her husband, Jonathan.

Ronnie lived her life with a twinkle in her eye, a spunky attitude, a wicked sense of humor and a smile on her face. She was filled with love and gratitude.

Her joyful sound, playful nature and magical presence will live on in all who knew, heard or saw her.

Spector sang lead on the influential stone classic “Be My Baby,” which hit No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1963. The song,...

‘SNL’: Billie Eilish Sings About Getting Weird With Santa Claus
Image
Billie Eilish delivered a Christmas song about getting weird with Santa Claus on the latest episode of Saturday Night Live, which featured the Happier Than Ever singer as both host and musical guest.

In the tradition of yuletide classics like “Santa Baby” and “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus,” Eilish and her girl group (Kate McKinnon, Ego Nwodim) sang about a strange encounter Eilish’s Leslie D had with the Christmas icon.

“It was a winter’s night, a quarter to 3 / I was dozing by my Christmas tree / When he...

How ‘Zoey’s Extraordinary Christmas’ Condensed a Third Season Story Into a Two-Hour Movie
Image
Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not watched “Zoey’s Extraordinary Christmas,” streaming now on The Roku Channel.

“Nash Bridges,” “Ray Donovan” and “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” are all fan-favorite television series that are continuing their stories with two-hour original TV movies, but only “Zoey’s” is set at the holidays and managed to turn its project around within six months of its series ending.

The musical comedy centering on the titular young programmer (Jane Levy), who developed the ability to hear people’s emotions sung aloud to her, originally aired on NBC but was canceled in June of this year, after finishing its second season. Six weeks later, creator and showrunner Austin Winsberg had a “four-line idea” greenlit by The Roku Channel. This became a two-hour movie titled “Zoey’s Extraordinary Christmas,” following Zoey and the rest of the Clarke family’s first Christmas without their patriarch, Mitch (Peter Gallagher...

Zendaya in Spider-man: Les retrouvailles (2017)
Zendaya Plays Charades, Talks 'Greatest Showman' Co-Star Zac Efron on 'The Tonight Show'
Zendaya in Spider-man: Les retrouvailles (2017)
Zendaya wasn't allowed to use her singing voice during her visit to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Monday night (Dec. 11). In fact, she wasn't allowed to use her voice at all as she teamed up with Fallon in hopes of defeating actor Billy Crudup and The Roots' Black Thought for a spirited, holiday-themed game of charades.

Zendaya was up first — she went with the clue behind No. 3, her lucky number — and was tasked with acting out "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus." Success. Point: Fallon and Zendaya.

Crudup struggled a bit, though, which was surprising seeing...

6 Classic Christmas Songs That Are Secretly Horrifying
Et si on vivait tous ensemble? (2011)
As Christmas carolers stroll down the streets and shopping mall speakers pump out seasonal standards, you'll likely be lulled into a nostalgic state of holiday wonderment as you recall your childhood where you spent listening to these very same songs.

But have you ever given them any real, critical thought? When you dive into the lyrics, some of these old holiday standbys seem downright terrifying. Here are six Christmas classics that are secretly horrifying.

Video: 13 of the Best Christmas Movie Lines All Together!

"I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus": As adults, we all get that the "Santa" in this song is really the narrator's dad getting a peck from his wife. But if you think about it from the child's point of view, his mother is cheating on his dad and potentially tearing the family apart. What's more, Santa seems to be cheating on Mrs. Claus as well. Santa, the paradigm...

25 Days of Tunes: Your Christmas Song Advent Calendar
Jason Alexander, Jess Harnell, Richard Steven Horvitz, Don Knotts, Aaron Spann, and Mae Whitman in Jingle Bells (1999)
The annual rollout of Christmas songs is often a rushed, haphazard affair: You can only take so many versions of "Sleigh Ride" crammed into your Black Friday commute before you crack. So to help you cope, we've created this Christmas Song Advent Calendar. Play one of these songs each day as we approach Christmas to help you get in the spirit. Dec. 1: "Jingle Bells" Obviously we started with this song because it is so cliché. That's why we're publishing this the day after we picked it. Beyond one listen this holiday season, there's no reason to play "Jingle Bells...

I Want to Get Intimate. Lubricantly | Eloquent Eloquence
Alright. 4 days til Christmas! Bring me all the hot toddies, turkeys and presents in the land! Kill Rudolph, keep the other reindeer! Kidnap the Sandy Claws and ask him why he didn't get me that thing I wanted! All Shall Love Me And Despair.

*ahem*

Apologies, that's the Christmas spirit taking over me. I'm sitting here surrounded by unwrapped presents and three rolls of wrapping paper, wondering in despair why I can't just put them in some plastic bags. But, spirit of Christmas! More wasted paper! Oh, who am I kidding, I love wrapping shit and the bright colors and everything. I love the damned season. What's best, I'll be going home to Honduras for three weeks, and I can't wait to pet my dogs, see my house and be pampered by my family. New Year's is also a huge deal where I come from, so I'm also looking forward...

Ronnie Spector on Beehive Maintenance, Serving the Troops, and Christmas Ding-a-Lings
Photo by Debra Greenfield. If you’re of a certain post-Baby Boomer age, you probably recognize Ronnie Spector for two things: Being in that Eddie Money video from the 80s where he sings, “Just like-a Ronnie said.” And being one of the featured performers on the album A Christmas Gift for You, which was released in 1963 and has been played on repeat ever since, especially in suburban shopping malls and Christmas parties hosted by your parents. The record is bursting at the seams with classic moments—like Darlene Love belting out “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” and Phil Spector’s creepy spoken-word greeting at the end, where he stops just short of saying, “Merry Christmas, everyone. Now get the hell back in my basement!”—but, at least for me, it’s the handful of songs by the Ronettes that make it such an iconic record. From Spector’s sex-kitten vocals...

"90210" Episode 311 Recap: "I Saw Teddy Kissing Kyle Riabko Underneath the Mistletoe Last Night"
Before we get to this week's recap, there are a couple of pieces of business to take care of this week. First up, some folks felt last week's recap didn't give sufficient credit to the kiss between Teddy and Ian. And perhaps I was so annoyed with the show that by the time we got to the kiss, I gave it short shrift in terms of credit. So to remedy that, I hereby give you Teddy and Ian macking on each other.

And let the record show, I thought it was a very good kiss and that both Trevor Donovan and Kyle Riabko are doing very good things with their roles. Just to be clear, I've never had an issue with either character or actor. Both are perfectly fine if neither is hugely groundbreaking. My issue has just been with the lack of screentime and character development.

As for those...

Mad Men “Christmas Comes But Once a Year” 8/1/2010
Tonight’s episode marked the return of four memorable characters. First there’s Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner’s son Marten as Sally’s neighborhood buddy Glen. Then there’s Pete’s wife Trudy played by Alison Brie whom you must recognize from NBC’s Community. Clean and sober Freddy, and Lee Garner Junior round out our foursome.

Glen. I’ve blocked Glen’s telephone number so he’ll stop calling and telling me about my parent’s relationship. I’m keeping the key chain. Seriously will Glen’s predictions come true for the Draper/Francis household?

Freddy returns triumphantly with a two million dollar account (due to a not so anonymous Alcoholics Anonymous relationship with Cal Rutledge from Pond’s), no drinking problem and a healthy distaste for Trudy’s husband, Pete. Trudy is just Pete’s wife in this episode, no family drama. yet. Since Freddy has been...

Men Without Hats, “The Safety Dance”

Montreal’s Men Without Hats had their moment in the sun in 1982 with a single that had three things going for it: It was from Canada, it was an international hit and it was about a series of dance moves. Like many of the groups on this list, Men Without Hats...
