Shararat

I had absolutely no expectations while slipping Shararat into my video player, I thought it would be yet another worn out tale of perhaps a teeny-bopper romance trying to be an eternal love story. The beginning did not disappoint me, Abhishek Bachchan(Rahul Khanna) speeding along in his fast car, involved in an inexplicable race with another gang etc..

He gets thrown in jail, and only then does the story begin to unfold. The judge, nudged on by an ambitious reporter Neha(Hrishita Bhatt), wanting a unique punishment for him, sends him to perform community service.. and that too, at an Elderly Peoples ashram! His indignation knew no bounds, and with disgust written all over him, he sets of with Neha(wanting her scoop!) to perform this torturous penance. He finds the place exactly as he anticipated, and doesn't hesitate to turn his nose up at everything.

But in spite of his rude and disrespectful ways, the elders accept him, and try and get him involved.. all except Prajapati Saab, Amrish Puri.. a cranky and snooty man who made his millions in mining. I must admit I rather enjoyed the scenes between Puri and Bachchan.. had me laughing more than once.! Rahul begins to mellow.. but can he actually change all his ways?

Rather enjoyable a movie, very different from any other Indian movie I have seen. A lot of people will consider this movie rubbish, but if you're looking for a change from the running-around-trees-in-wet-clothes scenes, this is a good choice. And the undaunting spirit of the people at the Ashram provide good fun along the way.

Music was ok, a couple of decent songs thrown in.. overall a 6/10

I had seen this movie earlier on the cable TV when it released, loved it then. I was young, cinema was different. Watched it again in 2025 at the age of 43 and the movie still holds pretty solid.

Character writing, plot points, the third act, everything is written to the clinical precision as every scene lands well.

The first 10 minutes could've been better, Hrishita Bhatt and the love angle could've been avoided but thats it. Every other thing is simply spot on.

I think the bad reviews and why the movie didnt work in the cinemas is because of the misguiding marketing. They hid the core subject and promoted the love story of a vegabond Abhishek Bachchan which the movie was not about.

Its a great family entertainer and a bollywood movie lover must not miss this gem. Most of the times its bollywood that lets us down but in this case, we have let down a gem. 8/10 2 points cut down for ocassionally bad direction, the love story and cinematography.

I only watched thisovie because I had read one of it's review in the IMBD and I had nothing else to do so I thought what not take a chance. Worst scenario I will just stop it after watching a few. Minutes and jump onto something else.

But man did that review was true!! It's a different movie with a solid story and solid performances especially but late Mr. Amish Puri.

It's not best of the best but certainly a breath of fresh air and a one time watch for sure.

This movie was released at a wrong time when Abhishek Bachchan movies was not doing well at the box office. Fate of Bachchan changed after this movie and his acting was appreciated in this movie pacing the way for his first sucesss in the movie " Run" . Shararat is a different from the league film which will surprise you with nice story, good direction, good acting and tight screenplay. This is the movie that will entertain you and your family . Abhishek Bachchan and Amrish Puri did a remarkable job, one as a spoilt brat and the other as the one who brings Abhishek back to right path. Hrishitaa is good too. Casting director did a good job. Each and every actor play their part to perfection. Mohnish Behl did a good job as the evil advocate. Ashish Vidyarthi is ok with his cameo appearance. Romesh Sharma and Navni Parihar as Dad and Mom of Abhishek Bachchan are noticeable . All the credit goes to debutant director Gurdev Bhalla for making a nice family entertainer which you will cherish with your family, with elders and children .
