A breathless story about love and faith!...

This is a story about love and faith. The author discusses the two comparable concepts based on the beautiful novel of Aytmatov.

One can say many things about the technical handling of the film. But besides, the story flows slightly and fetches the viewers eyes till the end. Questions appear on mind; What love means? What does faith mean? Can love keep a couple together? Did you ever fall in love? OK, then answer this; did you ever TRY?!?... A woman with a baby stands between a one who loved too much, and another who did try his best.

Sometimes life do not allow you to choose. It forces you through its own stream.

Kadir Inanir and Turkan Soray starred in many films together. This film is one of their best few. Ahmet Mekin was shining, as well. You'll love the movie, if you are one of those who likes stories which sparkle questions on one's mind... And a little warning; watch out for your tears...

Classic Love-Story That Became a Template for Many Turkish Films in the Future

Shot on a shoestring in the countryside, SELVI BOYLUM AL YAZMALIM is an acknowledged classic of Turkish cinema. The plot is straightforward enough: village girl Asya (Turkan Sorak) falls in love with itinerant truck-driver Ilyas (Kadir Inanir). They get (unofficially) married and have a child, but Ilyas cannot adjust to life as a husband and seeks solace elsewhere. Asya leaves home for good, and is left alone on the road until Good Samaritan Cemsit (Ahmet Mekin) takes her in. After a whole, during which time Cemsit proves a good father to Asya's son Samet, the two get married. However Ilyas returns quite unexpectedly to the scene, forcing Asya to make a choice between past and present lives. Yilmaz's direction is straightforward; while allowing the plot to unfold at a cracking pace, he uses the shot/reverse strategy to powerful effect, especially at the end. The three central performances are just brilliant: Soray and Inanir were never better during their entire careers as the ill-fated couple, while Mekin has a wonderful talent for showing repressed emotion in a single expression. SELVI BOYLUM AL YAZMALIM has proved highly influential: the 2012 films ARAF and GOZETLEME KULESI both have sequences borrowed from the film.

Love Triangle

True love is the thing people try to find for centuries. But you will question what is "true love" while watching this classic film of Turkey.

Is it a physical attraction or is it a full devotion (sharing the good and bad sides of life). The story is a known one. An innocent girl and a passionate young man... And a third person enters their life. This could be seen as a love triangle. And the girl with the red scarf has to make a decision....

And you will think what you would do if you were Asya. You must think twice.

"love or struggle"

This movie is an adaption of famous Kirghiz writer Cengiz Aytmatov's novel. The unforgettable moment in the movie is a dialogue: "What is love? Love is struggle, love is goodness, love is amity". The main theme in the movie is "love needs struggle". It is a turning point in Turkish cinema and a sheer gem confirmed by many rewards at home and abroad; second best movie in 15th. Antalya Altin Portakal Film Festival, Best Director, Tashkent Film Festival best actress (Turkan Soray). The Soundtrack of the movie is praised as the best soundtrack in Turkey. It was composed by "Cahit Berkay" from the band Mogollar. Especially, the song "selvi boylum al yazmalim" is still unforgettable and considered as one of the most contemporary folk song in Turkey. In order to understand Turkish culture, humanity, sensitiveness and rural life style, "selvi boylum al yazmalim" is the best movie to give a chance. It is an universal epic and the question of "love" through Anotolian point of view...

A love story between a truck driver and a village girl.

Without doubt, one of the most beautiful Turkish movies ever. I have seen this movie on television a while ago and I dont remember the whole details clearly. But I definitely remember bursting into tears many times during the movie. A legendary movie indeed!

Amazing love story.

This is one of the best movies in Turkey. Even in Turkey this is so underrated. It deserves so much more. It has not that complex storyline but somehow it is amazingly effective. I don't know how they managed to make that. Of course acting carries the movie, the star Turkan Shoray is so beautiful and she carries the movie actually. But I don't think it's the only reason.

Yes... I almost forgot. I think I found what's the secret. The Scores that composed by Cahit Berkay. The scores are too great, It should be worldwide class scores. Scores also reflects the subject of the movie so good.

Further than a milestone for Turkish cinema history

"Selvi Boylum Al Yazmalim" is further than a milestone for Turkish cinema history and it takes a place among the most impressive and best films in Turkish cinema history as well. The film leaves a dramatic effect and many questions behind after leaving the theater. The story is based on "Cengiz Aytmatov"s novel named in Turkish "Yol Arkadasi" and screened by the direction of "Atif Yilmaz". In my opinion, the film has an allegoric exposition in which love and exertion usually clash each other though, the power of the exertion becomes superior at the end, is analogous with the spirit of communism. Meanwhile, the book mentioned above, also won the 1963 Lenin award. Audience can find great number of details about the praising of the strive. Performance of the players also seem excellent in this movie. Woman character; Asya; Turkan Soray, stuck in the middle of two men. On the one side her love and father of child, Ilyas; Kadir Inanir, whereas on the other side is desperately but constantly struggling man Cemsit; Ahmet Mekik. She is uncertain about where to go, whom to choose; love or exertion ?

This movie belongs to Hollywood

I love this movie. it is one of my favorite movies. I watch it at least once a year, I love the story, the actors, the film music, everything. And even it hurts myself, I love the moral of the story. In my eyes, this film should be internationally known an recognized.

"Elveda selvi boylum, elveda Asyam. Bitmemis türküm benim...." ( a quoute from the film)

''What was love? Love was kindness, friendship, love was effort." Not much to say. It was great.

What more can be said... When I watched it when I was a child, I thought that the ideology of this movie was the theme of separation, but when I grew up, I watched it then I did not understand how naively today's realities were processed. Is this what we call modern times now? ''What was love? It was effort..'' The background music is simply amazing. It still ringing in my ear.. Kadir Inanir's acting was one of the best of the period, but there is a truth about Türkan Soray. She is not called Sultan for nothing. Every time I watch her movies, I fall in love with those eyes once again. Acting is flowing from her stance. It really makes you fall in love. There is not much to say, everything is clear. Those who watch it know that, those who haven't watched thet should watch it too.

I'll go and wipe the tears from my eyes anyway..

Extraordinary music

The composer of the film music proved to be the best one in Turkish film industry and created a unique style which can be even defined as a new genre of his own. The rhythm changes according to the pace of the film, but melody fits to the dramatic or cheerful scenes without changing and loss of continuity.

I suggest a quick search of Cahit Berkay and Husnu Senlendirici (the clarinet) for Selvi Boylum Al Yazmalım.

Turkish Legend

Even though Kadir Inanir is the leading one in the movie, that pleading look in the last scenes makes him cry. While poor and poor waiting for Ilyas in Asya, the last time he sees him in Dilek's room in the company, he scatters the man. Jamshid is a king man. He is a lad. Never seeks to take advantage of the plight of the afflicted.

And Cahit Berkay. He is a living legend. Are the background music that plays in our lives.

Sosyolojik Boyut

The sociological aspect of this film is often overlooked. Soviet/Kyrgyz writer Cengiz Aytmatov's story presents Ilyas as more than just a symbolic figure. He is a man attached to property and possessions, extremely individualistic and selfish. He does not strive for his family or society; his desires are scattered wherever his impulses take him. Even in the scene where he initially helps, he tries to leave by saying he has work to do.

The response Asya receives when she speaks with the boss is also meaningful - what matters to him is the truck, capital, and property. Ilyas is a member of capitalist society from a different angle; he is from Istanbul. His tastes and affections are impulsive - he easily falls into alcohol, sex, and reckless living. He feels no responsibility toward his surroundings. Ilyas slaps women - a slap he cannot give to the boss - because he is tightly bound by the inevitable bonds of patriarchy. His masculinity is of great importance to him, and when it is criticized, it wounds his pride even more than those who actually offend him.

Cemsit, on the other hand, is the model citizen of a fully socialist society. He works in a disciplined manner on roads and bridges, always putting society first. He helps others with his parka, never expecting anything in return. His first meeting with Asya is filled with compassion. Cemsit is relatively more educated and cultured, and he values women. He encourages Asya to work and always leaves the choice to her - he never pressures her. He understands childcare and even builds swings; in this sense, he embodies the Swiss army knife of the communist man.

The effort he puts into love is admirable in itself, and he knows that love also requires labor. Cemsit is a sincere and understanding character. At the end of the film, Asya makes a decision that reflects a socialist consciousness and walks toward that sacred direction where love is formed.
