More Cultural Event Than Great Wrestling Showcase

WrestleMania 14 goes down as one of the most memorable of all-time. DX, Mike Tyson, and Stone Cold have all "aged well" in WWE lore. After recently re-watching this event, however, I found it to be indeed a cultural touchstone, but also somewhat lacking in great matches.

The first four matches on the card are all duds. Then, at least things start to pick up a bit with The Rock vs. Ken Shamrock. Shamrock will never be the most flamboyant pro wrestler (despite being obviously the best real fighter of the entire mix), but here they showcase Rock's vocal talents and continue to lean into that angle (with good reason considering he's so smooth at the mic).

The New Age Outlaws vs. Cactus Jack & Chainsaw Charlie is kind of a mess, but at least an iconic one with the use of the dumpster.

The penultimate battle really ratchets up the intensity, with Undertaker squaring off against "brother" Kane. Pound for pound, I would consider this match the overall best on the card. The buildup is superb and the match itself is well-executed and entertaining.

Then, of course, there is Michaels (now the lead DX-er) vs. Austin, with Tyson looming in seemingly all corners. Again, this match isn't the greatest in terms of technical skill excitement, but the charisma of both participants (as well as how well DX and the Austin brands had been built up) still make it feel like a major event.

What WM 14 signals, at least to me, is that the WWE is truly embracing their Attitude Era signification rather than sort of being embarrassed by it. Now, the fingers and lewd gestures are front-and-center, and the crowd loves it. Call it debasement or call it entertainment, but either way you look at it the WWE wins in terms of publicity or buzz.

You'll remember this one . The attitude arrived

A new era for wrestlemania begins on this night how different it looks from 12 months ago at wrestlemania 13. How different the style. The new characters that have arrived the greats who have left and the new look of the attitude era.

A strong battle royale to begin the night followed by a high energy light heavyweight championship match Owen hart and triple H contest for the European championship.

Then a sign of the new era and mixed tag team match with Marc mero sable gold dust Luna, Intercontinental title match between the rock and Ken Shamrock. Then you better call somebody because the new age outlaws are about to face Cactus Jack and chainsaw Charlie in a dumpster match Solid entertainment a real sign of the new era to follow. The brothers finally step into the ring together after being on fire undertaker faces his brother Kane the main events of the evening Shawn Michaels stone cold Steve Austin with iron Mike Tyson creating some very memorable visual imagesFrom this main event.

Shawn Michaels Final WWF Match--Steve Austin's First WWF Title

This Wrestlemania just didn't do it for me. While some things, such as the battle royal and involvement of celebrities were a throwback to the good old days, so to speak, it seemed to be more of a highbrow "In Your House" than anything else. Above average...worth it for several matches such as the tag team title match, although worthy of note is that the title change meant nothing, as it was reversed the next night.

    Greatest Wrestlemania of all time

Any true wrestling fan would have to consider this Wrestlemania to be one of, if not the best of all time. It was packed with excitement and surprises. One of the greatest matches of all time was between Shawn Michaels and Steve Austin with special guest ref Mike Tyson. The show that Michaels put on was unbelievable, especially considering the shape that his back was in and that this was his last match.

    GOODBYE SHAWN MICHAELS

This was a good event. The matches on the undercard were pretty decent. There were three matches that really stood out.

Firstly, the Undertaker battled his 'brother' Kane in an exciting match pitting two top monsters against each other.

Marc Mero and Sable fought Goldust and Luna Vachon in an entertaining match. During that match Sable showed that she was more than just a pretty face.

In the main event WWF Champion Shawn Michaels wrestled in his last match against Stone Cold Steve Austin. This was a brilliant match and I was totally impressed because Shawn was wrestling with a bad back and you could see he was in agony at times. But he didn't let Austin carry the match-he gave his usual 110 percent and gave the fans a great match. That was the most memorable thing about this WrestleMania!
